PASTOR S PEN... word from the hert It is time to come together s church. Sometimes the worst of times re the most importnt times to unite. Though this is n wfully difficult period in the history of Ctholicism, it gives us n opportunity to show others who nd wht we re; nd t Sint Chrles Borromeo, we cn use this opportunity to respond with ctions tht mke us better people who mke the world better plce. The church ws born upon the cross out of n ct of forgiveness when Jesus sid: Fther, forgive them, for they do not know wht they re doing. While born on Clvry, it ws creted by the Holy Spirit t Pentecost when the breth of new life nd fire from heven reigned down, lighting upon our church founders giving them courge beyond their imgining nd dwelling in the herts of the fithful. Some rgue tht the church ws estblished by Jesus when He sid to Peter: You re the rock upon which I will build my church. Others rgue tht He didn t intend to build church s we think of church but wnted to chllenge His own Jewish church to get its priorities right nd get right with God gin. The Greek word for church used in this instnce is ekklesi. Though Greek ws the written lnguge of tht dy, it ws not the lnguge Jesus spoke; so we don t know exctly wht He sid. Ekklesi is not reference to wht most of us think of church (cthedrls, bureucrcies, dicsteries, hierrchies, chnceries, bsilics ) but wy of living, wy of loving, wy of following His exmple. If this definition is ccurte, then Christ nd the church cnnot be seprted from one nother; they re intrinsiclly connected. If our church is inseprble from Christ, then this my be grce-filled time for us becuse, s Bishop Johnston recently sid to priests of our diocese, it unites us with the crucified Lord nd identifies us with redemptive suffering. We hve been chosen for this time in history nd chrged with showing the world who we re. The best response for this difficult time is for us to do more of wht Jesus chllenged us to do in following his wy of living, loving, nd leding. We cn do more to hel the broken-herted, cre for the downtrodden, feed the hungry, tend to the troubled, lift up the lowly... We cn do more to cll the church bck to the core messge nd mission of Jesus nd wy from ecclesil messges tht muddle tht mission. We cn do more to fight negtive, sinful clericlism tht protects the institution over the truth. We cn do more to work for substntil chnges in structurl nd cnonicl regultions to increse ly involvement in decision-mking. We who re priests cn do more to repent for our collective sins, for the personl sins of our brothers, nd for not being our brothers keepers. We cn do more so tht we re not defined by this scndl but known for our communion with Jesus who chllenged His own church to be better. It is cler tht the Ctholic Church cnnot continue into the future in the mnner it hs operted in the pst; we need to loosen ll desire to control, giving the church bck to the Holy Spirit for guidnce. As Mother Teres often reminded us, it lwys begins with you nd me. We cn come together in our locl prish communities to listen, lern, nd lend hnd to the reprtion of the church. We cn do this in simple yet profound wys, much like fmily deling with trgedy or dysfunction within its own unit. As we come together, we should hold up those tht hve little strength nd len upon those tht re stronger right now so we will wlk s one into the future. Next Sturdy mrks our nnul fll friendriser; it will be perfect time to demonstrte our community life s fmily of fith. We will shre mel nd enjoy gret music, hng out with our friends nd neighbors, nd be there for one nother even if only to lment our condition. Since rriving in the northlnd nd meeting hundreds of people round town who introduced themselves by sying, I used to go to Sint Chrles, I ve thought tht we need homecoming event tht invites nd unites ll those who re rooted here. I think this Friend-riser should be tht event. Plese rech out nd invite someone who used to go here, to our school, to Mss, nd those who used to live in the neighborhood. Though ugly spects of Ctholic structure hve been exposed, we know tht the church tht incorportes Jesus wy of living nd loving hs impcted us in positive wys nd guided us to better lives. It is time to come together to repir nd rebuild tht church. John J. Olshefski
