DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Service of Worship Third Sunday after the Epiphany January 21, 2007 Eleven o clock in the Morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God Photo by Mark Manring What does it mean to be the people of God? The scripture lessons this morning seek to answer that question. In Nehemiah, Ezra publicly reads the words of the law, and the people respond by weeping at the demand. However, Ezra and Nehemiah comfort the crowd by saying the day is holy and joyous for God s people, implying that the law is a gift, not a burden. In Luke, Jesus quotes Isaiah and speaks to the liberating nature of God s action in the world a vision of jubilee where sight is recovered, and those captive are released. In I Corinthians, Paul encourages followers of Christ to appreciate their different gifts and pursue harmony in being the body of Christ for the world. The topic of the sermon today is what it means to live as the body of Christ and the image above represents the body of Christ at worship in Duke Chapel

DUKE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Duke Chapel is a grand building, suitable for hosting major events in the life of the University and its members; it acts as a moderator for the diversity of religious identity and expression on campus; and it is a Christian church of an unusually interdenominational character, with a tradition of stirring music, preaching, and liturgy. We welcome you to our life of worship, learning, dialogue and service. www.chapel.duke.edu Box 90974, Durham, NC 27708 919-684-2572 FOR WORSHIPERS & VISITORS Prayer requests may be placed in the prayer box located by the Memorial Chapel. For a tour of Duke Chapel, meet today s Docent near the front steps of the Chapel following the service. Hearing assist units and a Braille hymnal are available at the attendant s desk at the entry way of the Chapel. See the Chapel attendant if you would like to use one of our large-print Bibles or hymnals for the worship service this morning. FOR FAMILIES & CHILDREN Children aged 4 and younger are welcome to visit the nursery (capacity limited), located in the Chapel basement, beginning at 10:50 a.m. each week. Pagers are available for parents to keep with them during worship. Parents needing a place to feed, quiet or change infants are also welcome. Activity Bags are available at the rear of the Chapel for children 5 or younger. Please return the bags at the end of the service. Children s bulletins are available from the ushers. We invite you to consider joining the Congregation at Duke Chapel. The Congregation is an interdenominational church with a variety of vibrant ministries, including discipleship and spiritual formation (for children, youth and adults), mission and outreach, and pastoral care. OFFERTORY The Spirit of the Lord Is upon Me Edward Elgar (1857-1934) The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord, to give unto them that mourn a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified. For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations. Isaiah 61:1-3, 11 *DOXOLOGY Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Alleluia, Alleluia! Praise God above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. LASST UNS ERFREUEN THANKSGIVING This morning we give thanks for the faculty, staff, and students of the School of Medicine whose lives are dedicated to the physical care and healing of those people who suffer because of accident or illness and who walk with patients through times of darkness and despair. Representatives bring a stethoscope and white coat to the altar. Two white roses are also brought forward in memory of Carrie Largent and Raja Das, two medical students who died last year. *PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING *THE LORD S PRAYER (number 895 in the hymnal, in unison) SENDING FORTH *BENEDICTION *RECESSIONAL HYMN (see text and music on next page) One Body, One Spirit DUKE CONGREGATION *CHORAL BLESSING God Be in My Head John Rutter (b. 1945) God be in my head and in my understanding.
