Welcome by our representative and assistance with arrival formalities and drive north. Meet your tour educator and depart north. Friday night services at the guesthouse (optional). Overnight: Guesthouse, Sea of Galilee DAY THREE SATURDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2019 ADVENTURES IN THE NORTH Breakfast at the guesthouse. Walk through the Tel Dan Nature Reserve, located on the largest tributary of the Jordan River, and explore the ruins of the great Biblical city of Dan. The panoramic views from Bental (overlooking the abandoned Syrian town of Kuneitra) give sharp insights into Israel's security situation on the Golan Heights, and the enormous challenges it faced in the 1973 Yom Kippur War. DAY FOUR SUNDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2019 HANUKKAH 1 ST CANDLE FROM MYSTICS TO DREAMERS IN THE GALILEE Breakfast at the guesthouse. Explore Tsfat, a center of Jewish mysticism for hundreds of years and a contemporary artists' colony, including: Visit the tomb of Rebbi Nachum Ish Gamzu, who was known to always say 'This too is for the best' (gam zu l'tova) even when faced with negative occurrences. Guided visit to the Ari, Caro or Abuhav Synagogues, each with their great stories and mystical messages. Visit the Tsfat Candle factory. A stroll through the quaint Artists' Colony, shop in the galleries and crafts shops and engage in dialogues with local artisans inspired by the messages of Kabbalah. Pizur lunch. LaDa'at Kinneret Cemetery: Enter the world of the early Zionist pioneers and learn about their hopes and dreams, their trials and tribulations and their ultimate success. Pause at the graves of legendary personalities such as Rachel the Poetess, Zionist philosopher Ber Borochov and songwriter Naomi Shemer. Visit Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu for an interactive tour of the Bio-Bee fields and facilities. Gain hands-on insight into a very local, world leader tackling the challenge of environmental improvement, using flies, bees, owls as well as having an opportunity to experience a very real, working and ideological kibbutz. Return to the guesthouse for candle lighting. Dinner at the guesthouse. DAY FIVE MONDAY, DECEMBER 23, 2019 HANUKKAH 2 ND CANDLE TO THE COAST Breakfast at the guesthouse. Check out and drive west to the top of Mount Carmel for a panoramic view of Haifa Bay and from the top of Mount Carmel view the Baha'i Gardens and gold-domed Shrine of the Bab, one of the holiest sites of the Baha'i religion. Visit Atlit, site of a British internment camp for thousands of Jewish refugees who were caught attempting to immigrate to Israel during the British Mandatory period. Lunch en route. Guided visit to Caesarea, one of the Land of Israel's most important cities in the Roman Period. Visit the Herodian theater and excavations along the Mediterranean shore, concluding with the interactive audio-visual program, The Stars of Caesarea, located in the ruined 900-year-old Crusader town. Drive to the city of Tel Aviv, known as the city that never sleeps, with its centers of culture, recreation and national history, great beaches and fine stores. Check into the guesthouse and candle lighting. Dinner at the guesthouse. Take an evening stroll to the Jaffa Overlook for an introduction to Tel Aviv at the place where it all began. DAY SIX TUESDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2019 HANUKKAH 3 RD CANDLE STRUGGLES THROUGHOUT THE AGES Breakfast at the guesthouse. Check out of the guesthouse. Urban Culture Tours of Tel Aviv, Combining Street Art, Language & Graffiti: Join a local resident, to explore the urban culture of the city. Visit Independence Hall, where David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the State of Israel on May 14th, 1948. Drive to the city of Rehovot to visit the Ayalon Institute for an eyeopening tour of a clandestine munitions factory used during the British Mandate. Lunch en route. Take part in an archaeological dig at the Beit Guvrin Caves and prepare to get your hands dirty as you uncover pottery from the Hellenistic period, 2,300 years ago, followed by a crawl through the Maresha Cave Labyrinth (crawling is optional). Beit Guvrin- Maresha National Park was recently recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Drive into the Negev Desert to the Nokdim encampment in the Southern Judean Desert for Bedouin-style hospitality and a Hafla' dinner and a night under the stars (tent). Candle lighting in the desert. DAY SEVEN WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 25, 2019 HANUKAH 4 TH CANDLE INTO THE DESERT, MASADA & THE DEAD SEA Breakfast at the camp. Ride camels through the desert in Biblical-style. Depart the camp and drive to Masada's Roman Ramp up to Herod's mountain palace and site of the Jewish Zealots' last stand against the Roman Legionnaires. Walk down the Snake Path and lunch at the base of Masada. Experience an astonishing sense of weightlessness as you float in the super-saline Dead Sea. Drive to Jerusalem. Welcome to Jerusalem: Enter the vibrant and colorful ancient city of Jerusalem and experience the convergence of the old and the new. Stop at Mount Scopus for an overlook of the Old and New City of Jerusalem and to recite the traditional shehechiyanu blessing. Check into the hotel and candle lighting. Free time for shopping in the Mamilla Mall, a very contemporary shopping area with a whiff of the past, located outside the Jaffa Gate of the Old City; pizur dinner. Tree planting at the Jerusalem Bird Observatory, including birdwatching, bird-banding and an insight into the urban wildlife of Jerusalem. Giving Back with Pantry Packers: Participate in Tikkun Olam by packing commodity food staples for Israel's poorest families; after a brief orientation session, don gloves, aprons and caps in order to fill bags of rice, beans and other commodities. Overnight: Youth Hostel, Jerusalem DAY NINE FRIDAY, DECEMBER 27, 2019 HANUKKAH 6 TH CANDLE HISTORY AND SPIRITUALITY IN JERUSALEM Breakfast at the hostel. Proceed to the Old City. Explore the excavations at the City of David, the very core of ancient Jerusalem; Walk through the recently opened Second Temple-period tunnel under the walls of the Old City, emerging in the Jerusalem Archaeological Park; visitrobinson's Arch and the Southern Wall steps where Jewish pilgrims entered the Temple Mount 2,000 years ago. Stop at the Kotel (Western Wall) and experience the special atmosphere of this holy site and then walk through the Western Wall Tunnel, the underground continuation of the Western Wall alongside the Temple Mount. Pizur lunch in the Jewish Quarter and then visit archaeological treasures and other highlights, among them: A walk along the Rooftops of the Old City for a behind-thescenes look at the various communities in Jerusalem and how they live alongside each other. DAY TEN SATURDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2019 HANUKKAH 7 TH CANDLE SHABBAT IN JERUSALEM Breakfast at the hotel. Shabbat Morning Services, possibly at HUC. Shabbat lunch at the hotel. Return to the Old City visits the Tower of David Museum of the History of Jerusalem for a walk through the city's history - with observation points, visual and audio-visual aids - from the time of Abraham to the end of the British Mandate over Palestine. Walk along the Ramparts of the Old City. Return to the hotel with time to shower and pack. Final thoughts and wrap up. Ben Kodesh Lechol: Havdallah overlooking the Old City.
