Volume 1 Issue 4 July / August Cordova Baptist Church The Visitor From Our Hearts...To Your Home Greetings to you in the name of our LORD and Savior, Jesus Christ! From Reverend Bill Monroe It was during World War II that General George W. Patton uttered these words; Lead, Follow, or Get out of the Way. And it was Broadway Joe Namath who said; In order to be a good leader, you have to make people want to follow you. Nobody wants to follow someone who doesn t know where he s going. These statements bring rise to several questions. What about our church and our personal life? Do we know where we re going? Do we have a vision and plan for tomorrow, and do we promote a good example in our church, our community, and our home? I recently preached a sermon entitled Mistakes I ve made in the Ministry, and let me tell you, I ve made a lot of them. If there s one thing I ve learned after 13 years of preaching, it s that when it comes to delegating responsibility, I m not an effective leader. I can hear the resounding Amen. But what about you? I believe it s the responsibility of every born-again Christian and Believer to be busy about the Master s Work and to be leading others to Christ and working until the Lord returns. Some have been followers too long and there remain others who won t get out of the way. Almost without exception God calls people to be good leaders. One example is found in Exodus Chapter 18, where God uses Jethro, to show Moses how he is to delegate responsibility. Notice that Moses was open to the advice of his father-in-law. One of the key factors in the decline of any church is lack of good leadership. So how do we develop good leadership? Well first of all we must do like Moses did. We must listen to sound advice. We must have an attentive ear. We must place the needs of others first. And we must do what is best for the whole body, and not just a few of it s members. It s true that good leaders sometimes have to make tough decisions. And not everyone is going to be pleased. No one knew this better than General Patton, and certainly no one knew it better than Moses. The Bible says that Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said (v. 24). Today I d like to challenge every member of Cordova Baptist Church. First, if God has given you the ability to be a good leader, accept this calling, and give your very best. Secondly, if God has not called you to lead, then be a good follower. If there s one thing good leaders need most, its support and encouragement from the body of Christ. Pastor Bill May the Lord bless you and keep you as you place your trust in Him in these final days.

Sunday School In Sunday School, as in all parts of our lives, we have a tendency to make things more complicated then they need to be. With that in mind, read the following 30 second lesson: A Sunday school teacher decided to have her young class memorize one of the most quoted passages in the Bible, Psalm 23. She gave the youngsters a month to learn the verse. Little Rick was excited about the task - but he just couldn't remember the Psalm. After much practice, he could barely get past the first line. Then came the day that the kids were scheduled to recite Psalm 23 in front of the congregation. When it was his turn, Rick stepped up to the microphone and said proudly, "The Lord is my Shepherd, and that's all I need to know." Page 3 Mission Team 2011 Savannah, Georgia Have you heard the song, And Can It Be? The chorus goes like this: Amazing love! How can it be That thou my God should die for me? For me the theme for this past mission trip to Savannah, GA should be Amazing Love!, the amazing love that God demonstrated throughout the week. We saw His love in the fact that He took teams of about 12 individuals that didn t know each other at all prior to Sunday, June 19th and through the bond of knowing Jesus and wanting to serve Him, formed ties that built friendships and wonderful relationships. We saw His love in the homeowner s faces when they expressed their gratitude for us coming to put a new roof on their house. We saw His love when no one got seriously hurt despite the heat and other dangers that could have been threats to our success. We saw His love during the worship services when over 200 young people were raising their hands and clapping in excitement over praising their Lord! We saw His love in individuals sharing their talents with others for the glory of God like giving away handmade bracelets for the price of saying a Bible verse. We saw His love in getting letters from our home congregation to encourage us and validate what we were doing. We saw His love through a church group devotion based on John 3:16 that challenged us to feel awe and excitement when we think about how much God loves us, so much that He was willing to send His one and only Son to pay the price for our sins even though we didn t deserve it. We saw His love when this devotion was further reinforced in a worship service that same day, and then the same topic was brought up again in our team devotions the next day. We saw His love when we talked to neighbors at the worksite and they were receptive to our presence and complimentary of what we were doing. We saw His love when the teams made crosses from materials at their worksite to present at a worship service as we sang, Oh, That Wonderful Cross! I think you get the point. Actually, I could have listed many more examples of His Love. We Serve an Awesome God!!! Thank you for giving us the opportunity to experience God s love through serving Him. In His Love,
Page 4 Cordova Baptist won the Team Sportsmanship Trophy. Thirteen teams voted for who would win; and Cordova took it home! These guys played good ball and we had some great times. These guys have grown so much. Jordan Honeycutt hit the first out-of-the park homerun. Mike Taylor, Chris Holt, Ben Harris, Hunter Shepard and Josh Johnson were first time players with Cordova. Josh Johnson exhibited great Sportsmanship. He would really rally the team. Gene Gardner was a great inspiration behind the plate as catcher. Ben Harris hit two out-of-the-park homeruns and was a great shortstop. Chris Hold great player, wherever you put him. Austin Buffaloe, Jordan Honeycutt and Christian Josh Ludlum, Clint McKnight played first and also pitched. Mike Taylor really became very versatile. He was relief catcher and right fielder. Trenton Morrison would play outfield and second. Hunter Shepard, our youngest player, played out-field and was a catcher. All of our players got some really good hits. David Ferron also played third base as well as pitching two great games. Kevin Ferron played great first and second base. Least we forget our greatest fan, Taylor Gathings. When she was gone on the mission trip, our cheering section wasn't the same! On behalf of these players, we want to thank the Church for allowing us to play ball and the ones who came out to support us. Thank You, Tommy Haire
