Jamestown 1605- English merchants ask King James I for permission to found a colony May 14, 1607: Jamestown founded 1 st permanent English settlement

Jamestown was sponsored by the Virginia Company of London. King James I granted charter (permission to form a colony) The company also supported English national goals of expansion and riches. The Virginia Company was a jointstock company. Investors bought shares in the company hoping the company would make money and that they would share in the profits. The plan was for the company's settlers to find gold and establish trade in fish and furs. The company sent 144 settlers in three ships to build a new colony in North America

Motivations for Jamestown Settlement Economic prosperity Single men hoped to make fortunes in Virginia and return to England Previous explorers brought home tales of vast amounts of gold and other valuable resources English patriotism Adventurers wanted to stake English claim to prevent Spanish from taking over all of North America.

James River Colonists Unprepared Most men: Adventurers seeking fortune, No farming experience or useful skills Jamestown surrounded by marshes, and disease-carrying mosquitoes, Hostile relations with the Native Americans By 1 st winter: 2/3 of settlers dead

Brain Break

Taking Control 1608- John Smith becomes leader, Builds fort Forced settlers to do work/build better houses Hard workers rewarded w/food Agreement w/local Natives(Powhatan), brought food, taught how to grow corn

John Smith was severely injured by an accidental gunpowder explosion; he returned to England for treatment in. 1609-1610, Winter: the starving time, when the population shrank from about 300 to 60 left at Jamestown. The Powhatan Indians placed the settlement under siege at this time. 9 of every 10 die for disease & famine 1610-1611: John Rolfe, arrived with the group from Bermuda, began experimenting with tobacco seeds he acquired from the West Indies. He tried to find a tobacco more pleasing to English tastes than the bitter native tobacco that the Powhatans grew.

Tobacco Saves Jamestown John Rolfe- introduced new type of tobacco Sells well in England Colony makes $ = colony survives

Relations With Natives 1614- John Rolfe marries Pocahontas(daughter of Powhatan leader) 1622- Colonists kill Powhatan leader Powhatan attack settlers, fighting continues 1624- King cancels charter, Virginia becomes a royal colony Ruled by governor chosen by king
