General Instructions Permission is granted with purchase to make as many copies as needed for your local unit only. Do not pass any copies on to other units - they are required to purchase their own books. Each copy should show the entire page, including copyright information. Making copies of copies or making copies for commercial gain is strictly prohibited. Enlargements or overheads may be made for use with larger groups. Any other use without specific written permission from the publisher constitutes an infringement of copyright. This book could be implemented in Primary, at home, or in any other situation for which it is appropriate. Muggli Graphics is not affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; no book or program we publish is reviewed or endorsed by the Church. All contents of this book are for the purpose of giving ideas and suggestions only; decide for yourself through scripture study and prayer if you wish to use these materials, and if so, how you will implement them. We recommend checking with your local leaders if you wish. Do not cut out or color the pages in this book. Instead, copy the pages onto regular or heavyweight paper, either white or colored, and save the book to use again. If the project needs to be mounted, it can be glued onto heavy paper with regular glue or spray glue. If desired, cover figures with clear Contact paper or laminate them. Usually when cutting items out, it is best to leave a narrow white margin all around. Prepare with flannel, magnets, or Velcro for use with flannelboard, magnet board, or Velcro board. In most cases, simple supplies are all you will need: scissors, crayons, markers, paste, and fasteners such as tape, stapler, brads, string, or yarn. To make an enlargement, use an opaque projector. If you don t have ready access to one, ask at a local school. Often it is possible to borrow an item or use it on the premises. Use a darkened room and back up to make the image larger, get closer to make smaller. Focus with the lens to sharpen the image. Project the image onto a large piece of paper such as posterboard and trace the image. Go over the lines later with markers or other media. You may have to use a ruler and/or T-square to get the lines straight. The best images to enlarge have sharp, clean, dark lines and shapes. A small Fold-A-Book is included in this book. To use, copy and cut out along outline. Fold in half vertically and slit along solid line running down middle. Next, fold horizontally in half and in half again. Unfold and refold as shown. Open slit and fold so back halves touch, and assemble so front cover and back cover form book covers. Small children will need adults to cut out and fold these books for them. Plan of Salvation COLORED INSERT (CENTERFOLD): Talk about the great plan of salvation, using the visual aids to illustrate the concepts. See General Instructions, page 3, for directions on how to prepare visual aids. Assemble as shown. Use the following songs and scriptures when each of these concepts is being discussed: PREMORTAL LIFE - I Will Follow God s Plan, Children s Songbook, page 164 COUNCIL IN HEAVEN - Abraham 3:23-28 SAVIOR PROVIDED - Articles of Faith 1:3, Ether 3:14 EARTH CREATED - Moses 2 ADAM AND EVE - Moses 4:6 through Moses 5:12 MORTALITY - Choose the Right Way, Children s Songbook, page 160 LIFE AFTER DEATH - Did Jesus Really Live Again?, Children s Songbook, page 64 DEGREES OF GLORY - 1 Corinthians 15:40-41 3

Creation Activity: Moses 2 Gather materials representing each day of creation. Some ideas are listed below. Talk about how the earth was created, using the pictures and materials you have gathered. You may want to let the children handle some of the materials or hold pictures for you. 1. Day and night divided - pictures of sunrise, starry sky, and sunset 2. Waters divided - container of water, picture of sea and clouds 3. Dry land appeared, plants made - potted plant, dirt in a container 4. Sun, moon, and stars made - star chart 5. Fish and birds made - real birds and fish, pictures of birds and fish 6. Animals and creeping things made, man made - real animals and insects, pictures of animals and insects (use children to represent Adam and Eve) 7. Day of rest - calendar showing Sunday, picture of a chapel Have children color pictures of the days of creation of their choosing from the following pages and display. 4

The First Day... On the first day, day and night were divided. Draw a picture of something you do in the daytime in the top part of the picture. Draw a picture of something you do in the nighttime in the bottom part. 5

The Second Day On the second day, the waters above were divided from the waters below. Color the picture. 6

The Third Day On the third day, dry land appeared and plants were made. Color the picture. 7

The Fourth Day On the fourth day the sun, moon, and stars were created. Connect the dots and color the shapes. 8

The Fifth Day On the fifth day the fishes and birds were created. Color the fish and bird. 9

The Sixth Day On the sixth day man was made in God s image and the animals were created... Color Adam, Eve, and the animals. 10

The Seventh Day On the seventh day, God rested from his work. He blessed and sanctified the seventh day. Connect the dots to see something we can do on Sunday. 11

As We Grow Have a mother bring her baby to help demonstrate the differences between a baby and the children in Primary. If this is not practical, use pictures of mothers and babies to show how our bodies are different as we grow. Do activities such as jumping, hopping on one foot, clapping, and dancing. Put up a picture of a temple on the chalkboard and use chalk to draw steps with the lines long enough for the strips below to be attached. Talk about how our spirits grow just like our bodies do. We learn how to behave and how to obey the commandments. We can learn to live gospel standards so we can go to the temple when we are old enough. Have children draw strips from a container and tell how they can live the principle. Use the blank strips to add more gospel principles. Let them attach their strip to the temple steps. PRAYER SCRIPTURE STUDY TITHING HONESTY PROPER LANGUAGE OBEDIENCE TO PARENTS KEEP SABBATH HOLY WORD OF WISDOM GOOD MUSIC GOOD BOOKS KINDNESS TO OTHERS CHOOSING GOOD FRIENDS 12

Reverence for God s Creations Make a small booklet for each child and bind it with yarn, ribbon, or string. Fold five pieces of 8 ½ X 11 paper for each booklet. Punch holes in the fold, thread material through, and tie. Each two-page spread should have a topic written at the upper left-hand corner and should have space to glue a picture in as well as space to draw and write. Title the booklet Reverence for God s Creations. Title the two-page spreads as follows, and do the following activities on the pages. On the remaining pages, have the children write their names (or have the teachers write them) and let them draw a picture of their own choosing. Family & friends - glue in Friends picture - draw family Country - glue in U.S. flag - draw child s home Nature - glue in Our beautiful world picture - draw flowers/trees Our bodies - glue in a girl & a boy - draw own face FRIENDS 13

Repentance Puzzle Copy the large letters onto card stock to make a puzzle. On the back of each puzzle piece, tape one of the small wordstrips found at the end of this activity. Using Gospel Art Kit pictures 227, 230, 234, and any others that may be appropriate, talk about the Atonement and repentance. Divide the children into four groups and give each group a piece of the puzzle. Have each group or child look up the scripture, talk about what it means, and share what they learned with the others. Put the puzzle together. Sing Repentance (Children s Songbook, page 98) or Help Me, Dear Father page 99). For older children, cut each puzzle piece into pieces to be put together to find the scripture reference. 20

FEEL SORRY (PSALM 38:18) ASK FORGIVENESS (ENOS 1:2-5) RIGHT THE WRONG (EXODUS 22:1) DON T REPEAT THE WRONG (MOSIAH 4:10) 21

Family Members Contribute to My Family Copy the pictures of family members on the following pages. Show the picture of a house. After dividing the children into groups, give each child or group a piece of paper and a picture of one of the family members on the following pages. The children or groups should put their pictures face down immediately so no one else can see it. Have each child or group use the paper to list ways the family member in the picture contributes to the family. Have the children or groups take turns acting out ways their family member contributes, and have the other children guess which family member it is. Let the children color the pictures. You may want to make additional copies. Sing Primary songs about family members and home. 22

Strengthening Homes By Honoring Parents Copy the house parts shown on the following pages. Prepare as described in General Instructions on page 3. Divide the children into groups. Give each child or group a piece of the house and have them take a few minutes to think of an example of how to honor their parents. Have the children or groups take turns sharing their case studies and their solutions. Let them add their cut-outs to a chalkboard or poster to build the home as shown at left. Sing Primary songs about home and family. Explain that as we honor our parents, we are strengthening our homes and families. Some possible case studies: When you are with some friends and they are talking about doing something their parents will not allow them to do, someone says, Let s sneak out tonight and do it anyway. What should you do? You are feeling lazy, and your mother asks you to clean your room. What should you do? Some of your friends criticize their parents, saying they are too hard to get along with, ask them to do too many chores, and other things. What should you do? Your parents have asked you to be at home for Family Home Evening, but you want to go to a movie with your best friend instead. What should you do? Your parents have talked to you about smoking cigarettes and the Word of Wisdom. Someone offers you a cigarette. What should you do? 29

Matching Game Play a matching game. Put the set of scripture wordstrips on one side of the chalkboard and the song names on the other side (all mixed up). Children can look up the scriptures (for younger children, have someone read the scripture to them), tell what doctrine the scripture is talking about, and pick the song that matches the scripture. Place the scripture wordstrip next to the scripture wordstrip, then sing the song. Blank wordstrips are provided so you can make up some of your own matches. Daniel in the Lion s Den Copy this puzzle for each child. Read the story about Daniel in the Bible (Daniel 1:3-17). Let children color their puzzles and then cut them apart. Smaller children will need help with this. Let them reassemble their puzzles by glueing them onto separate pieces of paper. Sing songs about keeping the commandments, such as Keep the Commandments, Children s Songbook page 146, or Choose the Right Way, page 160. 41

Hidden Word Puzzle Copy this puzzle and hand one out to each child with a pencil. For younger children, enlarge the puzzle onto the chalkboard or large piece of paper and do it together. Look up each scripture and identify the commandment it is telling us to keep. Fill in the letters and find the hidden word in the boxes. Talk about this commandment and how keeping all the other commandments helps us keep our covenants with Heavenly Father. Answers on next page. 42

The Last Supper Use these scripture strips to tell the story from Luke 22:7-20 about the last supper and the meaning of the bread and water. Have them draw or write one thing they will do this week to remember Jesus Christ on the paper hearts on the next page. Copy the scripture strips and hand out to the children at the end of the activity. Luke 22:7-22 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat. And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare? And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in. And ye shall say unto the good-man of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. PAPER HEARTS 45

I Can Feel the Influence of the Holy Ghost Have children read the scriptures below. Explain that there are many ways the Holy Ghost speaks to us. Show the Article of Faith 1 sign. Let the children bear their testimonies of times when they have felt the influence of the Holy Ghost. Sing the first article of faith song in the Children s Songbook, page 122). Article of Faith 1: We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost. Article of Faith 1: We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost. Article of Faith 1: We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost. Article of Faith 1: We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost. 46

What the Holy Ghost Does for Us Divide the children into five groups and give each group a wordstrip with a picture of an object that illustrates something the Holy Ghost does for us. Explain each thing the Holy Ghost does for us that each wordstrip represents. Have each child or group think of an experience or scripture story that illustrates ways the Holy Ghost has blessed them or someone else in the way their wordstrip represents, and have the children share the experiences. 47

48

The Lord Directs His Followers Select from the following scripture stories of the Lord directing His righteous followers when they prayed or read the scriptures, or use others of your choosing. Lehi going into the wilderness (1 Nephi 1:5-6; 2:1-5) Nephi and the broken bow (1 Nephi 16:17-31) Joseph Smith and the First Vision (Joseph Smith-History 1:5-20). Copy and cut out the wordstrips and tape them to the floor. Read or tell one of the scripture stories, then have children take turns throwing a bean bag onto one of the papers on the floor and answering the question. Explain that we can learn what Heavenly Father wants us to do when we pray and study the scriptures just as His followers have done in the scripture stories. Who was the story about? What did he do to find out what Heavenly Father wanted him to do? 49

What did Heavenly Father want him to do? What happened because of his obedience? What can I learn from this story? 50

I m Happy to Pay My Tithing Teach the principle of tithing and explain that paying tithing is one way we can show gratitude for our blessings. Use the picture to illustrate the principle. If desired, the coins could be copied and cut out so they can be manipulated. 51

Saturday and Sunday Activities Explain that the way we can decide which activities are appropriate for the Sabbath is whether the activity makes us feel closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus. Divide the children into two groups. Have the first group draw pictures of things they do on Saturday to prepare for Sunday. Have the second group draw pictures of Sabbath-day activities that they feel are appropriate. Have children in each group tell about their activities and display their pictures. Sing Saturday (Children s Songbook, page 196) and Choose the Right Way (page 160). SUNDAY ACTIVITY SATURDAY ACTIVITY 52

Keeping Our Bodies Sacred Find a picture of Christ and attach the DO sign found on the next page to the back of it. Post the DO and DON T signs in the front of the room. Cut out all the letters and put the words and phrases into separate envelopes. If there are two words in a phrase, clip the letters of each word together. Teach about the sacredness of our bodies. Have each child or group unscramble the letters to form a word or phrase. Let them attach the letters to a strip of paper and post each strip under the appropriate DO or DON T sign. When finished, turn over the DO sign to show the picture of Christ. 53

54

My Testimony Color these pictures of five essential things that we each can gain a testimony of: Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon, the Restoration, and the living prophet. I am a child of God 55

Mission Preparation Game Make a life-sized game board by using pieces of colored paper to construct a path on the floor with many squares of six different colors. Place a picture that represents missionary work or sharing the gospel at the end of the path. Find a small square box and attach paper of one of each of the six colors to each side, then attach the six wordstrips shown below to the sides to play the game. Each side of the box (cube) will be a different color with a wordstrip attached. Use beanbags or other objects as game pieces. Have children roll the cube like a die and then follow the instructions on the up side to move a game piece ahead to the next square that is the same color. Decide ahead of time to play the game for a set period of time and see how far you can go before the time is over. Tell the children that we need to prepare now for missionary service. Tell a personal story of obedience. Express gratitude for your blessings. Recite an Article of Faith. 60

Repeat one of My Gospel Standards. Sing a song from The Gospel section of the Children s Songbook. Tell one thing you will do to be a missionary now. 61

Articles of Faith Concentration Game Tell about how Joseph Smith wrote the Articles of Faith. Copy enough of the handouts on the next page for each child. Copy one set of the number cards below, mount on heavy paper or laminate, and cut apart. Turn over and attach the number cards onto a game board with putty adhesive. Divide children into groups. Have groups take turns sending a child to choose two number cards to turn over. If the number cards match, have their group recite that article of faith, then remove those two number cards from the game board. Continue until all the number cards are removed. Give the children the handouts at the end of the activity. 62

ARTICLES OF FAITH 1. We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost. 2. We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam s transgression. 3. We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel. 4. We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. 5. We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof. 6. We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth. 7. We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth. 8. We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God. 9. We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God. 10. We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory. 11. We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may. 12. We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law. 13. We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul - We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things. JOSEPH SMITH 63

God s Plan for Me Copy the strips below and add any you think are appropriate. Put each strip into a box or envelope and wrap as gifts. Have children sit in a circle. Distribute the gifts around the circle. Have the children pass the gifts around while singing I Will Follow God s Plan, Children s Songbook, page 164. Stop the music, and open one gift. Talk about how that thing is a gift because of the plan of salvation. Continue until all the gifts have been discussed. Have participants bear testimony of Heavenly Father s plan for His children. After the activity, have the children glue these gifts onto the Heavenly Father s Gifts page and draw one of the gifts they are thankful for in the remaining space.
