Spreading A Love for God and His Glory November 4, 2018 You shall not steal. Exodus 20:15

Our worship is a response to God s initiative. The pattern of our worship reflects the gospel. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS *CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm 100:1-2 *COME CHRISTIANS JOIN TO SING - Hymn #302 Come, Christians, join to sing, Alleluia! Amen! loud praise to Christ our King; Alleluia! Amen! Let all, with heart and voice, before His throne rejoice; praise is His gracious choice: Alleluia! Amen! Come, lift your hearts on high; Alleluia! Amen! let praises fill the sky; Alleluia! Amen! He is our Guide and Friend; to us He'll condescend; His love shall never end: Alleluia! Amen! Praise yet our Christ again; Alleluia! Amen! life shall not end the strain; Alleluia! Amen! On heaven's blissful shore His goodness we'll adore, singing forevermore, Alleluia! Amen! - 2 - *Indicates when to stand. All Music Copied Under CCLI License #34680

*HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD The splendor of the King clothed in majesty. Let all the earth rejoice, let all the earth rejoice. He wraps himself in light and darkness tries to hide and trembles at his voice, and trembles at his voice. How great is our God, sing with me. How great is our God, and all will see how great, how great is our God. Age to age he stands and time is in his hands. Beginning and the end, beginning and the end; the Godhead three in one: Father, Spirit, Son. The Lion and the Lamb, the Lion and the Lamb. Call to Worship Worship begins with God who invites us and welcomes us into his presence. Because of Christ, we can approach God with boldness even though we are sinful and weak. (Bridge 2x) Name above all names, you are worthy of our praise and my heart will sing how great is our God. (Chorus 2x) *PRAYER OF PRAISE - 3 -

*GUIDE ME O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, pilgrim through this barren land. I am weak, but Thou art mighty; hold me with Thy powerful hand. Bread of heaven, feed me now and evermore (2x) Open now the crystal fountain, whence the healing waters flow; Let the fiery cloudy pillar; lead me all my journey through. Strong deliverer, be Thou still my strength and shield. (2x) When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside; Death of deaths, and hell s destruction, land me safe on Canaan s side. Songs of praises, I will ever give to Thee (2x) Land me safe on Canaan s side, bid my anxious fears goodbye (4x) Goodbye COMMON CONFESSION OF SIN SCRIPTURE OF EXHORTATION: Psalm 25:8-10, 12-14 Good and upright is the LORD; therefore he instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies Who is the man who fears the LORD? Him will he instruct in the way that he should choose. His soul shall abide in well-being, and his offspring shall inherit the land. The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant. continued above - 4 -

All: Remember your mercy, O LORD, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O LORD! For your name s sake, O LORD, pardon my guilt, for it is great. My eyes are ever toward the LORD, for he will pluck my feet out of the net. Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged; bring me out of my distresses. Consider my affliction and my trouble, and forgive all my sins. (Psalm 25) SILENT CONFESSION OF SIN DECLARATION OF GRACE: Matthew 11:28-30 Jesus said: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Call to Confession We all sin daily, in thought and word and deed. As we come into God s presence, we acknowledge how we have rebelled against our King and seek his forgiveness. - 5 -

*HE WILL HOLD ME FAST When I fear my faith will fail, Christ will hold me fast; When the tempter would prevail, He will hold me fast. I could never keep my hold through lifeʼs fearful path; For my love is often cold; He must hold me fast. He will hold me fast, He will hold me fast; For my Saviour loves me so, He will hold me fast. Offering We give back to God a portion of what he has given us to use to declare that he is Lord of all. (This is part of our service as a church family, and visitors should not feel obligated to participate.) Those He saves are His delight, Christ will hold me fast; Precious in his holy sight, He will hold me fast. Heʼll not let my soul be lost; His promises shall last; Bought by Him at such a cost, He will hold me fast. For my life He bled and died, Christ will hold me fast; Justice has been satisfied; He will hold me fast. Raised with Him to endless life, He will hold me fast ʻTill our faith is turned to sight, When He comes at last! (Chorus 3x) OFFERTORY & RESPONSE Diaconal Offering today: Please use the Special Offering envelopes located in the pew racks. Reminder: please sign and pass the Attendance Register down the pew. 11 a.m. Service: Children ages 4-6 excused for Children s Church (downstairs in the Corner Classroom) - 6 -

Sermon Series: The 10 Commandments Pastor Lloyd Pierson, Ph.D. The Lord of the Inheritance - Exodus 20:15 (ESV) 15 You shall not steal. Romans 13:7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed. 8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet," and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Luke 3:14 Soldiers also asked him, "And we, what shall we do?" And he said to them, "Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages. Ephesians 4:28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. Sermon Outline I. Protecting the Rights of Others - 8 -

II. Sermon Outline, continued Blessing the Lives of Others Sermon God addresses and speaks to us by the reading and preaching of his Word. Both Christians and non-christians need to hear the good news of salvation and grow in it. Sermon Questions 1. Heidelberg Catechism 111: Q. What does God require of you in eighth commandment? A. That I do whatever I can for my neighbor s good, that I treat others as I would like them to treat me, and that I work faithfully so that I may share with those in need. 2. How is Jesus the Lord of the inheritance? 3. In what smaller ways does theft occur that make it easy to turn a blind eye toward? What is the Lord s response to this? 4. As Christians, our calling is greater than avoiding theft. We are called to bless others and to help them flourish. How can you be a source of blessing and flourishing to others? 5. The eight commandment is also a call to honor the work and labor of others. What are ways you can do this in the lives of those you know? - 9 -

*ROCK OF AGES, CLEFT FOR ME - Hymn #499 Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee; Let the water and the blood, from thy wounded side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure, cleanse me from its guilt and pow'r. The Lord s Supper The gospel is not only heard, but visibly seen as God invites us to commune with him at his table. In the Lord s Supper we remember and experience Jesus saving work. Not the labors of my hands can fulfil thy law's demands; Could my zeal no respite know, could my tears for ever flow, All for sin could not atone; Thou must save, and thou alone. Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to thy cross I cling; Naked, come to thee for dress, helpless, look to thee for grace; Foul, I to the fountain fly; wash me, Saviour, or I die. While I draw this fleeting breath, when mine eye shall close in death, When I soar to worlds unknown, see thee on thy judgment throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee. CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER Wine is located in the two outer rings; juice is located in the center ring. (See FCC observance on below) PRAYER FOR THE CONGREGATION At Faith Covenant, the Lord s Supper is observed each Lord s Day as the climax of our worship service. We invite to the Lord s Table all those who are baptized disciples of Jesus Christ, under the authority of Christ and His body, the Church. By eating the bread and drinking the cup with us as a visitor, you are acknowledging to our church that you are in covenant with God. You also acknowledge that you are a sinner, without hope except in the sovereign mercy of God, and that you are trusting in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation. If you have any doubts about your participation, please speak to the pastor or one of the elders after the service. Wine and bread are the elements of the supper as instituted by Jesus Christ. We recommend the use of wine; however we offer both juice and wine in the tray to allow true liberty of conscience. - 10 -

*ALL GLORY BE TO CHRIST Should nothing of our efforts stand, no legacy survive Unless the Lord does raise the house, in vain its builders strive To you who boast tomorrow s gain, tell me what is your life A mist that vanishes at dawn, all glory be to Christ All glory be to Christ our king, All glory be to Christ His rule and reign we ll ever sing, All glory be to Christ His will be done His kingdom come, on earth as is above Who is Himself our daily bread, praise Him the Lord of love Let living water satisfy, the thirsty without price We ll take a cup of kindness yet, all glory be to Christ When on the day the great I Am, the faithful and the true The Lamb who was for sinners slain, is making all things new Behold our God shall live with us, and be our steadfast light And we shall e're his people be, all glory be to Christ *BENEDICTION If you are in need of personal prayer, an elder is available up front after the service. Benediction Just as worship begins with God s call, it ends with God sending us into the world with his word of grace. We go forth to live and serve by the power of his grace, not our own strength.
