2 P a g e DATNG OLD WELSH HOUSES GROUP PENHWNLLYS, Llaniestyn, Anglesey PART 1 The house now known as Penhwnllys Plas is one of four houses known by the name of Penhwnllys. The others are Penhwnllys Uchaf, Penhwnllys Bach, and Penhwnllys Mawr. The Tithe Map of 1851 shows that Penhwnllys Plas and Penhwnllys Uchaf were in common ownership at that time. As will be seen, it appears that only one of those properties was inhabited until approximately 1880, when the family expanded. t is possible that Penhwnllys Plas had been used as an outbuilding until being returned to residential use. Penhwnllys Bach and Penhwnllys Mawr have separate ownership histories. Until the late 19 th Century, all the houses in the area of Penhwnllys were simply referred to as Penhwnllys, or one of its variants. This means that although we can be confident as to the ownership of Plas and Uchaf, the inhabitants prior to the Land Tax records, which begin in 1752, cannot be distinguished with confidence. The first documented owner of Penhwnllys is Gruffudd ap Tudur ap Madog ap arddur. Following his death, his lands were transferred to his son Gwilym in 1310. Gwilym appears to have died without issue. By his will dated 1375, his Anglesey land passed to Griffith ap Gwilym, the son of his sister Eva. The land then passed by descent to the Griffiths family who founded the Plas Newydd Estate. The Plas Newydd Estate retained ownership until it was sold to the tenant, Jane Williams, in 1858. (Griffiths Pedigrees pp. 56, 62 and 186 (Gwilym is not mentioned as he had no heirs; Eva and her descendants are shown) and Archives Wales Context description for Bangor University Penrhyn Castle Papers). PENHWNLLYS arddur = Angharad Madog = Eva Tudur = Morfudd? = Gruffudd (ob 1375) Gwilym Eva = Gwilym ap Griffith Heilyn (by his will of 1375, his Anglesey land was left to i his nephew Griffith) Generys = Griffith ap Gwilym (d. 1405) Gwilym ap Griffith = (2) Joan Stanley Robin Gwilym Fychan = (2) Gwenllian Robert The various Penhwnllys houses are clearly distinguished in the Census of 1911 and its immediate predecessors. By working backwards, the occupiers of the houses can be traced to the start of the Census in 1841. This information has been compared with the Land Tax records, which begin in 1752. Plas Newydd rental accounts begin in 1805. This information shows that Plas/Uchaf land was occupied by one family, that of Owen Williams and his descendants, from 1795 until they purchased it from the Plas Newydd estate in 1858. At the time of the purchase, the household consisted of Jane Williams, aged 57, the widow of Owen Williams son John, and her eight children, ranging in age from 11 to 26. n the 1871 Census, the household is unchanged save for the death of the youngest child. By the 1881 Census, however, the family has been considerably altered. Jane has died at 2
P a g e 3 the age of 77. Her son William, now about 55, has a 27 year old wife and a 3 year old son. There are now two households: one consisting of William and his new family, the other of William s unmarried brothers and their servant. William and his family live in Uchaf. The brothers (and on the night of the 1881 Census, their small nephew) live at Plas. By the next Census, the younger of the two brothers has left, to be replaced by his brother and sister-in-law. n the 1901 Census, Penhwnllys Plas is, for the first time, called Penhwnllys Plas. A new family lives there, that of John Owen, and a separate identity is needed. n the last Census to be released, that of 1911, Griffith Williams, a farmer, lives in Plas with his wife Margaret, their two children, and their servant. n 1881, Griffith had been a servant in the neighbouring property of Penhwnllys Fawr. 1310 n June 1310 Hywel ap Tudur and Gruffudd and Madog ap Dafydd ap Tudur released to Gwilym ap Gruffudd ap Tudur the lands in various townships held by his father Gruffudd ap Tudur at his death including Penhwnllys. Gruffudd ap Tudur was the son of Tudur ap Madog of the line of arddur [ ] The standing of the family is reflected by some of the witnesses to this deed; they included Sir Gruffudd Llwyd, Goronwy Fychan and Robert ap Gruffudd, all of them descendants of Ednyfed Fychan. (A D Carr, Medieval Anglesey, 2011, p 166, citing Bangor Archives Penrhyn 405) 1330 n 1330 four of the sons of Bleddyn ap Llewelyn Croen of the commote of Dindaethwy and their cousin Gwenllian ferch Dafydd sold four bondmen and their issue to Gwilym ap Gruffudd ap Tudur of Llaniestyn for ten pounds and when Gwilym died in 1376 he left more than twenty bondmen, all named, in his will. (A D Carr, op cit, p 92 citing Bangor Archives Penrhyn 407 and Penrhyn 5) 1346 Anglesey Court Rolls Wednesday 6 th September Great Tourn of the commote of Dynd[aethwy] at Bettaskerint PENWYNTHLES 5 came Llywarch ap Madog ap ockyn and Gwenllian his sister found by a jury to have stolen corn value 2d belonging to Gwilym ap Gruffydd on Thursday 3 rd August (TAAS 1932, p. 45) 1352 Penhwnllys in the Commote of Dindaethwy n this township there is one free gwely called Gwely Tudur ap Madog. And William ap Gruffydd, Dafydd ap Rhys and others are the heirs thereof. And they owe nothing thence to the lord prince, neither rent, nor relief, nor amobr, except suit to the county and the hundred. And they have their own mill called Melin Tudur. And the bondmen of these heirs present twice a year at the two great tourns of the sheriff. (The Extent of Anglesey 1352, TAAS 1971-2 p. 235) The kindred groups which appear in the pedigrees really did exist and the 1352 extent shows their presence in different parts of Anglesey. { ]The main kindreds in Dindaethwy were those of Mabon Glochydd in Porthaethwy and Carrigtegfan, Geraint in Pentraeth and arddur in Penhwnllys, Twrgarw, Llanddyfnan and Tre r Ffraint. (A D Carr op cit p. 109 citing The Extent of Anglesey). 1376 death of Gwilym ap Gruffudd ap Tudur of Llaniestyn Few medieval Anglesey wills survive, but those which are available include references to both stock and crops. The earliest is that of Gwilym ap Gruffudd ap Tudur of Llaniestyn, who died in 1376; this includes an inventory which reveals that Gwilym had two horses and 22 beasts, presumably cattle. (A.D. His wife was Ellen Whyte, dau of Richard Whyte of Friars in Llanfaes. Many thanks to J Dilwyn Williams, Education Officer, Gwynedd Archives, for deciphering this will. 1648 Schoolmaster Williams account of the battle at Beaumaris, includes the following: Captain Lloyd, of Penhwnllys, being commanded to guard the church, he locked up his men in it, and ran himself away, taking the key in his pocket, whereupon he was called Captain Church to his dying day. Prior to the 1881 Census, only the three properties Penhwnllys Uchaf, Penhwnllys Bach, and Penhwnllys Mawr showed returns. n 1881, following the marriage of William Williams of Penhwnllys Uchaf, Penhwnllys Plas, not independently named, is shown as the dwelling of William s unmarried brothers Richard and David and their servant Elizabeth Thomas. On the evening of the census, William s 3 year old son Benjamin was also staying at the property. The following year, Richard and Thomas are in residence together with Catherine Williams, the wife of one of them. The property is identified at Penhwnllys N 2. By the 1901 Census, the property is occupied by a different family and is called Penhwnllys Plas. t is therefore speculated that Penhwnllys Plas had been used by the Williams family but had been replaced by Penhwnllys Uchaf. When William married, Penhwnllys Plas was returned to use as a residence. By 1901 their daughter Margaret had been born. On this Census, Margaret is noted Dumb. 1954 29 August Conveyance between Thomas Pritchard Williams of The Post Office Llanddona (1) and Hugh Roberts of Penhwnllys Plas Llaniestyn (2) Margaret Tower of Penhwnllys Bach remembers Margaret and Robin living at Penhwnllys Plas. They now live in Llangefni. Mrs Roberts continues to go to Sunday School at the church in Penmon on the first Sunday of each month. The family of Penhwnllys Bach would have Christmas Eve supper at Penhwnllys Plas. New Year s dinner was then held at Penhwnllys Plas. Mrs Towers has fond memories of a friendly, helpful community. (personal discussion with J Gooding on 22 August 2013) 1986 Robert and Mary Roberts sell to Mr and Mrs Gaunt [confirm date] The Gaunts daughters Claire and Katherine continue to live in the property.
