Week 4 (April 28th/29th) 31.4 Elementary SGL Love One Another Bible Passages: 1 John 3:10-18 Main Point: John wrote that others will know we are Christians because we love one another. Big Picture Question: Why does God want us to obey Him? Obedience is our response to God s love for us. Key Passage: Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Leader Prep: The apostle John had been one of Jesus closest friends. Along with Peter and James, John was part of the innermost core of Jesus disciples. John even referred to himself in his Gospel as the one whom Jesus loved. It is not surprising that 50 years after Jesus returned to heaven, John wrote a letter to help believers understand who Jesus is. At the center of John s message was one key theme: love. John wrote that God is love, and if believers truly love God, then we will love one another. Our love for one another should be so deep that we are willing to lay down our lives for one another just as Jesus did for us. It is this deep, genuine love that will cause the world to understand the reality of the gospel. Love is misunderstood and distorted in our culture today, and the kids you teach have been impacted by this in some way. Many of your kids may see love as just a feeling, as something temporary, or as something that has to be earned. This session provides you with the perfect opportunity to expose the world s myths about love and remind kids of the truth about God s love. Remember to be sensitive to the situations kids face. Many may feel unloved. Many may have been hurt by those they love. Many may be trying to earn love from others. Be prepared to address these situations. Remind kids that Jesus love for them is unconditional and unending. It is not just a feeling. Jesus love for us is proven by His death on the cross to rescue them from sin. We can love others because God loved us first. 1

INTRODUCE THE STORY Arriving Discussion: As kids arrive, ask them what it means to love someone. Talk to kids about whom they love, and who loves them. Say: We all have people in our lives whom we love and who love us. Today our Bible story will focus on God s commandment for Christians to love other Christians, as well as everyone else. Prompt kids to talk about people they love. How do those people know the kids love them? Say: We can say we love someone, but it s even better to show that person we love him or her by our actions. Today s Bible story is about loving one another. Coloring/Activity Page: Invite kids to complete the Love in Action activity page. Direct kids to circle the scenes depicting loving behavior and cross out the scenes depicting hurtful or unloving behavior. Say: Some of those pictures showed great examples of what it looks like to show love to others. Some showed what it looks like when we do not show love. Why do you think God wants us to show love to other people? We ll learn more about that today! Invite kids to complete Fill in the Pieces on the activity page. Kids will write each piece s number in the space where it belongs. Say: What do you think is happening in this picture? [ Allow kids to respond. ] We will find out in our Bible story if you are right. Pre-Lesson Activities (Optional): Option 1: What is love? Ask the kids what love looks like. As the kids describe love, list their ideas on a dry erase board, chalkboard, or large sheet of paper. Say: Love can look different in different situations. One thing that almost always shows love is putting the needs of another person before your own. Today we will learn more about the way God commands Christians to love one another. Option 2: People charades Before the session, write on separate index cards words describing different people. Consider using these examples: baker, football player, ballet dancer, gardener, race car driver, and so on. Prepare about eight cards. Invite kids to play a game of charades. Choose a player to begin. The player will draw a card and perform silent actions for the other players. (Examples: A baker might act out stirring dough in a bowl, or a football player might act out throwing a ball.) 2

The first person to guess the person gets a point. Invite another player to choose a card and play additional rounds. Say: Some of those were more difficult to guess than others. What kinds of actions might you do for the word Christian? [ Allow kids to respond. ] Today s Bible story is about how people will know we are Christians. TRANSITION TO LARGE GROUP LESSON APPLY THE STORY Bible Story Review: Let the kids use paper lunch sacks, markers, construction paper, glue, googly eyes, and other craft supplies to make paper bag puppets. After the kids have completed their puppets, create scenes that depict the kind of love John was talking about in the Bible story. Then ask the following questions: Who wrote 1 John? ( John ) What testament is 1 John in? ( New Testament ) What message did John remind believers of? ( We should love one another, 1 John 3:11 ) We should not be surprised if the world does what? ( hates us, 1 John 3:13 ) How do we know what love is? ( Jesus laid down His life for us, 1 John 3:16 ) Why does God want us to obey Him? Obedience is our response to God s love for us. Say: The world is broken and filled with sin. That s why perfect love is so amazing; it doesn t happen naturally. Perfect love, the kind Jesus showed on the cross, comes only from God. When people display perfect love, it shows that they have been transformed by God s perfect love. John wrote Form two teams of kids and provide Bibles for them to use. Ask the first team a review question. If applicable, provide a reference for them to find. After a team answers, the opposing teams should decide if they think the answer is correct or incorrect. Reveal the correct answer. Award a point to the first team for each correct answer, and award a point to the opposing team if they guessed the accuracy of the answer. Then ask the second team a review question and allowing the first team to guess if they are correct or incorrect. Who wrote 1 John? ( John ) What testament is 1 John in? ( New Testament ) What Bible division is 1 John in? ( General Letters ) What message did John remind believers of? ( We should love one another, 1 John 3:11 ) We should not be surprised if the world does what? ( hates us, 1 John 3:13 ) How do we know what love is? ( Jesus laid down His life for us, 1 John 3:16 ) Say: John said that God is love. He showed His love by sending Jesus to rescue us from sin. John wrote that others will know we are Christians 3

that others will know we are Christians because we love one another. because we love one another. We can love others because He loved us first. Bible Story Activity: : Show love scenarios Read the following scenarios aloud. For each scenario, guide kids to discuss how they could show love in the situation. Your brother really wants to play outside with you, but Mom asked him to fold the laundry first. There is a lot of laundry to fold! You see a classmate sitting alone at lunch, but you usually sit with your friends. You hear some other kids making fun of a new kid at school. Your friend is upset because her parents won t let her go to a concert. You have money to buy a snack after school but your friend doesn t have any money. You see a classmate getting frustrated with a math problem. Say: We saw in our Bible story today how John wrote that others will know we are Christians because we love one another. Choosing to show love is not always easy. Sometimes we want to do what is best for ourselves instead of helping others. : The love of the cross Before class, use craft sticks and glue to make two or three cross shapes for your group. In class, give each kid a sheet of construction paper and instruct her to draw a large heart on the paper. Then, allow the kids to take turns holding the cross shapes behind the paper and rubbing the side of the crayon on the paper over the whole heart shape. The image of the cross should show up in the hearts. Help the kids write the main point along the bottom of their paper. Say: John wrote that others will know we are Christians because we love one another. When we show love, others will see Jesus in our lives, just as you could see the cross in your heart drawing when you began to color it in by rubbing the crayon over the paper. Perfect love comes from God, so when people see God s perfect love coming from us, they will know that we have been changed by God s power. This is why we must remember the good news about Jesus: He showed us what love is by laying down His life for our sins. We can love others because God first loved us. Key Bible Verse Activity: Allow volunteers to say the verse from memory. Praise each kid for her efforts. Then, show the key passage poster and read it with the rest of the class. Encourage the group to continue trying to memorize the verse. Say: Great job so far! You ve all almost got the whole verse memorized. Remembering this verse is helpful because it teaches us that our sinful lives from before Jesus are gone! Our old life was crucified and buried. When we believe in Jesus, the Holy Spirit changes us to live for God s glory. 4

THE BIBLE STORY Love One Another 1 John 3:10-18 As one of Jesus closest friends, the apostle John had lived alongside Jesus. He had witnessed Jesus life and teachings himself. Now, some 50 years after Jesus had returned to heaven, John was an older man. He knew who Jesus really was, and he wrote a letter to help believers understand that Jesus was and is the Son of God. John showed that God is love. If believers truly love God, they will also love one another and that love must be shown in what believers say and do. John said that people who are God s children live differently than people who are not God s children. Believers do what is right, and they love one another. This is not a new message. Jesus told us to love one another too. John wrote that others will know we are Christians because we show love to one another. John told about Cain and Abel. Why did Cain kill Abel? Cain killed his brother because he did what was evil and his brother did what was good. Cain hated Abel. John explained that people who do not love others are controlled by the power of death. God has set every believer free from the power of death. He has loved us and has given us life, so we can love one another. We know what love is because Jesus showed us. He laid down His life for us. Because of Jesus power, we can and should love like that too. When we have something that our brother needs, we should give it to him. If someone has enough to help but turns away and does nothing, does that person really know God s love? John said that we must not just talk about loving others. We must love them by our actions and by telling them the truth. Christ Connection: John wrote a letter to teach believers in the church about the importance of showing love. Love is more than feelings or words it is an action. Jesus showed God s love for us when He died on the cross to rescue people from sin. 5
