HIGHLAND CHRISTIAN CHURCH DISCIPLES OF CHRIST 265 VERSAILLES ROAD FRANKFORT, KENTUCKY 40601 JUNE 2018 SCOTT S THOUGHTS Soon I will be going on my sabbatical, and I will be away for 4 Sundays during this time. (I can hear the clapping already.) However, there will be lots of interesting things going on during those Sundays and I want to share some of that with you. Sunday, June 17: Since this is Father s Day, we want to celebrate our fathers (our biological ones and our fathers in faith). One way we will do that is to sing together some of our great hymns of faith. Please join us for our Singing to the Father with our fathers day. (I just thought of that title Maybe I will get a sense of humor during my sabbatical.) Sunday, June 24: This day of worship will be packed with sharing and fellowship and food! I have asked some of our church folks to share on this theme: What is a way that you are involved in the life of our community, and how has that involvement been a blessing in your life? (If you would be willing to share your response to this question, please come that Sunday ready to share it!) One reason why we have this theme on this day is because of the meal that we will share together after worship. Our Hospitality Committee is going to provide a fellowship meal after worship, the proceeds of which will be given to our church s support of Relay for Life. This will be a really great day at church! Sunday, July 1: Jack Coleman will be speaking on this day of worship. Jack is the Director of Community Services for Bluegrass Community Action and Jack is also an ordained Disciple Minister who worships at Harrodsburg Christian Church. I met Jack at a gathering of the Bluegrass Community Action and came away very impressed with his compassion for others. Jack will be sharing a bit about that compassion in our worship that Sunday. I hope you will come hear him! Sunday, July 8: Andrew Baker, Executive Director of the Access Soup Kitchen and Men s Shelter, will be sharing in worship on this day. If you follow Andrew on Facebook, or, better, see Andrew in action, you will know that he has a big heart for those who are facing struggles in life. When Andrew asked me what I wanted him to talk about, I told him to just tell stories! (If you do ever read Andrew s Facebook stories, you will know why I said this.) Again, another great speaker that you really don t want to miss! STRATEGIC PLANNING MEETING Please join us for our first Strategic Planning event, to be held in the chapel on Wednesday night, June 6, at 6:30pm. At the May Church Board meeting, the Board voted to enact a Strategic Planning event, which will take place every other month (and in those months, replace the regular meeting of the Church Board, unless a special called Board Meeting is deemed necessary). The purpose of the Planning event is to, well, plan! No voting, no reports, no financial studies, just planning. Planning what, you ask? Planning the events of the church. Special worship plans, fellowship plans, outreach plans, all sorts of plans. At each of these planning events, the gathered group will look at the upcoming three months, to begin to sketch out what all will be going on in the life of our congregation in those three months. Who is in this Planning group? Well, I (Scott) will be there, as will be our board chair. And representatives of the worship, missions, and hospitality committees. And YOU! ( Me?, you ask. Yes, You!) The goal of this whole planning event is to gather the thoughts and ideas and input from all our church folks. We hope that many of our board members will be there, but we hope YOU will plan to be there too. Younger and older folks, every-sundayat church folks and not-at-church-a-whole-lot folks, folks who have been at Highland since the church started and folks who are brand new to Highland. Wednesday night, June 6, will be our first planning event. Come help us think about who we are by helping to think out what we will be doing!

The youth will be encouraged to either remain in the Worship Service or go to the nursery with Elizabeth Hockensmith. This coming Sunday, June 3, our youth will be involved in an outreach event for the First Responders of our community. Following the Children's Moment, all the youth will be dismissed to go to the fellowship hall, where the youth will be making cookies that will be given to Franklin County rescue workers after worship. This yummy project is one way that we can thank all these important and hard workers for all that they do for our community! I hope all our young people can be at church on Sunday to help!! Our May Guys Supper Night was a great gathering of several of our men. The next Guy Supper will take place on Tuesday, June 5, 6:00PM, at China Wok. Men of Highland, come join us, and bring a friend! WORSHIP AT NEW LIFE IN CHRIST CHRISTIAN CHURCH Our next night of worship with the women of New Life Church takes place on Tuesday, June 12. We will leave from the church in the van at 5:15pm. The New Life Church is located in Louisville inside the Diersen Center, a locked-down facility for women coming out of drug and alcohol prison sentences. If you have not been with us, you will be amazed and grateful at the joy of our time together! HIGHLAND GOES TO JUNIPER HILLS! Our church has reserved use of the Juniper Hills Aquatic Center, on Sunday, July 22, from 7:30-9:30. This is an opportunity for our folks to gather together. Swim if you want to, float on the river that winds through the park, or just chill out and watch others do the swimming for you. And bring a friend!!! Ladies Lunch Thursday, June 28. Time and location to be announced.
