The Olin T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church January 24, 2016 Becoming Aware No one has a right to sit down and feel helpless; there s too much to do. Dorothy Day GATHERING RINGING OF THE SANCTUS BELL Some traditions ring Sanctus Bells to call worshippers attention to the holy. (Sanctus means holy or sacred. ) Today, the Sanctus Bell rings to signify the holy around, among, and within us. PRELUDE Partita on Come Christians, Join to Sing Matthew H. Coral II. Chorale V. Mediation INTROIT What s So Funny Bout Lee and Gretz Peace Love and Understanding As I walk through this wicked world searchin' for light in the darkness of insanity, I ask myself, is all hope lost? Is there only pain and hatred, and misery? And each time I feel like this inside, there's one thing I wanna know: what's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? And as I walked on through troubled times, my spirit gets so downhearted sometimes. So where are the strong and who are the trusted? And where is the harmony? Sweet harmony. 'Cause each time I feel it slippin' away, just makes me wanna cry.

* CALL TO WORSHIP One: All: One: All: One: All: We have come to worship God, the living God, Who calls prophets and teachers to bear witness. We have come to praise God, the almighty God, Who answers the forces of hatred and hurt with the power of grace. We have come to worship God, all-gracious God, Who chooses even you and me, to receive and carry the Word of life and hope. All Glory to God! * HYMN Come, Christians, Join to Sing 90 MADRID * INVOCATION AND PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST Stephanie Ford One: The peace of Christ be with you! All: And also with you! (Please greet one another with this ancient sign of welcome and extension of hospitality and peace.) * SONG OF PRAISE GREATOREX Glory to the Creator, and to the Christ, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen. Stephanie Ford WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS (Please pass the Friendship Registers found on each row. Complete the requested information and then pass it back down the row. Thank you for worshipping with us at Binkley!) LISTENING THE FIRST LESSON Amos 5: 10-15 THE GOSPEL LESSON Luke 4: 14-30 Pastor: The word of God for the people of God. Children may join Stephanie Ford at the baptistry.

* PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Pastor: All: Now may the words of my mouth And the meditations of all our hearts be pleasing to you, O God, our rock and our redeemer. Amen. SERMON Invitation to Marcus McFaul Pursue Justice and Peace in the Way of Jesus SILENT REFLECTION PRAYING AND GIVING HEARING OUR JOYS AND CONCERNS Dale Osborne CALL TO PRAYER Give Thanks Lee and Gretz I give thanks for the sleeping child, and I hold her close through all these miles. You know the road we re on, it leads somewhere. I give thanks that we all still care for the lives we live and the love we give, and the hope we sow for this world we know. And the company we keep is what makes the task more sweet as we come together now. Don t ever doubt that one small group can change the world. I give thanks for all these hands that take a risk; that make a stand. I give thanks for all the good deeds unseen and everyone who still dares to dream. For the lives we live and the love we give I give thanks that doubts may clear. Speaking out in spite of fear, I give thanks for the morning sun. Doing my best to see the good in everyone, and the lives they live and the love they give THE MORNING PASTORAL PRAYER All: By your Spirit, Almighty God, grant us Love for others, Joy in serving you, Peace in disagreement, Patience in suffering, Kindness toward all people, Faithfulness in temptation, Gentleness in the face of opposition, Self-control in all things. Then strengthen us for ministry in your name. Amen.

CALL FOR THE OFFERING One: All: God called great prophets, and God calls us. God is generous, pouring out the gifts of grace and love and the life-giving power of the Word for all people. We respond with our renewed commitment to God s vision, and by giving our tithes and offerings to the ministries of God s church. Let us gather our gifts together and offer them to God in grace and gratitude and praise. OFFERTORY DUET One Great Hour to Share Lee and Gretz You celebrate my glory in the beauty of the earth, in love that brings forgiveness; in the miracle of birth. You offer up your gratitude in worship and in prayer, but what I really want from you is willingness to share. There are questions you can t answer--that keep you up at night: Why evil strikes the innocent and darkness hides the light. On the day when every eye can see; when all accounts are squared, the question that will matter most is: Did they know you cared? When the wind and the rain of the hurricane left me homeless on the street, did you give me clothes and shelter, did you bring me food to eat? When the Warlords came and I fled the flames; when they made me a refugee, did you feel my racing heart beat? Hear my cries of agony? When the heat and the sand of this barren land left me struggling to survive, did you help me find clean water, so my family could thrive? When I was lost and lonely and wandering in despair, my greatest time of need was your one great hour to share. My world, for all its beauty, can be an ugly place; suffering comes and hopes and dreams vanish without trace. Though tragedy can bring on pain you simply can t erase, it gives each soul a chance to be an instrument of grace. * DOXOLOGY Please sign with the leader or simply sing. LASST UNS ERFRUEN Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below, Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Creator, Christ, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! * UNISON PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING God of the prophets, we bless this offering as people who have received your gifts of grace and hope. We return to you a portion of the abundance you have given to us. We dedicate all that we give to your loving purposes: bringing in those who have been cast out; standing strong on behalf of those who are weak; speaking out with your Word of joy and justice for all people. May your loving realm increase! In Jesus name: Amen.

Leslie Lee and Steve Gretz In 2007, Leslie and Steve moved to Rochester, New York, from the Boston area where together they ran The Mozaic Room coffeehouse for eleven years. In 2003, they started recording and performing together as a duo. Their music combines their backgrounds in traditional, country, Americana, and gospel music with their taste for contemporary singer/songwriters. Their performances feature simple but tasteful arrangements of timeless melodies. Steve's guitar is often supplemented by other traditional instruments, but the focus is always on thoughtful lyrics and beautiful harmonies. With Perry Cleaveland (Photo by Robert Grolling) When Steve and Leslie return to New England, they are sometimes accompanied by their Very Fine Band: Hatrack Gallagher (harmonica), Peter Tillotson (upright bass), Don Croad (drums), and multi-instrumentalist, Seth Connelly, who also produced their four albums together. In New York, they sometimes perform with guest musicians Perry Cleaveland (mandolin, fiddle), Joe Dady (guitar, fiddle, and whistle), or multi-instrumentalist Allen Hopkins. Leslie and Steve have also sung harmony vocals onstage for Brooks Williams, Greg Greenway, Perry Cleaveland, The Dady Brothers, Joe Crookston, and Joe Jencks, and added backing vocals to the song "A Friend Like You" on Joe Crookston's 2011 release Darkling & the BlueBird Jubilee. They have opened shows for Michael Troy, Bill Staines, Danielle Miraglia, Brother Sun, Kim and Reggie Harris, and Chris Wilson. When they are not in the spotlight themselves, Leslie and Steve host two music series: an informal sing-around called Old Time Music Night held on the first Sunday of each month at Greece Baptist Church, and Lake Effect Shows, a house concert series in their home featuring local and touring folk and acoustic musicians. In 2011, they wrote the song, "One Great Hour to Share" for the One Great Hour of Sharing offering, which assists individuals and communities around the world who suffer the effects of disaster, conflict, or severe economic hardship. The song was used to promote the offering in churches throughout the country. Congregations have shared videos that the song accompanies as well as sung it in small groups or choirs.

YOU RE INVITED TO BIBLE STUDY! If you've found yourself bewildered by the Bible or simply at a loss to understand the major themes of scripture or even felt intimidated by all the scholars at Binkley, then this opportunity is for you! Starting on Tuesday, Feb. 16th, a long-term Bible study (32 weeks) will be offered entitled DISCOVERING THE BIBLE. This is a course through the Kerygma Bible Study program. All participants will need to purchase a workbook ($30.00). Each session will be on Tuesday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in a space to be determined by the number of participants. Dr. Marcus McFaul will lead and facilitate the class. This is an introductory exploration of the Bible where the people, places, and stories of the Bible intersect with your story! Through a process of reading, reflection, discussion, and creative expression, both the first-time learner and the lifelong student are invited to an engaging, rewarding encounter with Scripture that will greatly deepen their knowledge and understanding of the Bible. If you want to participate please sign-up by contacting Dr. McFaul directly at marcus@binkleychurch.org to secure your spot in the class. We will need a minimum of 10 persons. Workbooks will be purchased for you, and you'll reimburse payment on the first day of class. This is an excellent small-group opportunity and you are encouraged and invited to attend!

Binkley has a partnership with the Pinheiros Baptist church in Northeast Brazil, the poorest and most traditional region of Brazil. Pinheiros is a member of the Aliança de Batistas, a progressive group of churches modeled on our own Alliance of Baptists. Being a progressive church in a poor and traditional region poses considerable challenges to all the Aliança churches, and their graceful yet persistent response to this challenge produces some of the most unforgettable people you will ever meet. Please let the office know you are coming by noon on Friday. We hope to see you there. 2/1 7:00 pm, Library: Earth Ministries Co-chairs Bob Phillips and Charles Coble invite Binkley members and friends to the organizational meeting of the Earth Ministries Committee.
