Introduction The Root of Sin 1. Everywhere we look we see so many things that are sinful. A. Things that are against God s teaching. 2. What is the root of all the sin and crime that plagues the world today? A. The simple answer is LUST 3. A fight is going on in every Christian we are faced with sin daily. A. We have desires to give into our lusts. B. We are told of this fight in Romans 7. Romans 7:15-23 4. We can see sin all around us, but we may fail to realize how it all starts. A. If we can kill sin before it becomes a real thing, we can save great deal of misery in our lives. 1) James tells us just how do it. James 1:13-15 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is fullgrown, brings forth death. The Root of Sin 1

Tempted By Lust James 1:13-14 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 1. We need to realize that God does not tempt us. The fact is, as the Bible states, we are tempted by our own lust. A. Lust draws us away from the right way and into Satan s camp. The Root of Sin 2

Lust Conceives James 1:15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. 1. When lust (desire), is taken hold of, lust conceives. A. It is like the seed of woman grabbing hold of the seed of man in conception in physical birth. B. Our desire or lust for the things of the flesh causes us to grab hold of the forbidden, and sin is born. C. Example: 1) When we bait and set a trap for a mouse using cheese. The mouse may or may not know it is a trap. 2) But the mouse wants the cheese so much that he makes up his mind that he is going to get it regardless of any consequences. D. Satan has set a trap to get us to sin. Sin s Birth 1) Our desire for the bait, our lust for the bait, brings temptation to get it. 2) Lust or desire conceives when we make up our mind that we are going to get it regardless of the consequences; the lust grabs hold of us. James 1:15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. 1. When we take hold of the forbidden, sin is born and we have transgressed God s law. The Root of Sin 3

Sin s Results James 1:15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. 1. The ultimate end of sin is death. A. Death is a separation. 1) We take hold of the forbidden and we separate ourselves from God by sin. Isaiah 59:1-2 B. Lust is the root of sin that separates us from God. All sin can be traced from the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, or the pride (vain glory) of life. 1 John 2:15-17 1) Lust of the flesh (carnal desires). Galatians 5:19-21 Ephesians 2:3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind... a) Eve was tempted through the lust of the flesh (Genesis 3:6) Good for Food. Jesus was tempted through the lust of the flesh. Jesus fleshly man hungered, he wanted food (Matthew 4:3). 2) Lust of the eyes (desires caused by sight). a) To Eve: Delight to the Eyes (Genesis 3:6). To Jesus: Give all to You. (Matthew 4:8-9). 3) Pride (vain glory) of Life (Vanity, Pride, Worldly Honor). a) To Eve: To make one wise. (Genesis 3:6). To Jesus: Pinnacle Temptation. (Matthew 4:5-6). The Root of Sin 4

Conclusion 1. Brothers and Sisters in Christ, we are continually faced with temptation in our lives every day. 2. Satan provides many things to cause us to lust. 3. We must learn God s will and prepare ourselves against the sins that bring death a spiritual death eternally separated from our God! A. Prepare! 1) So that we will not give into lust which is the root of all sin. The Root of Sin 5
