Welcome to Worship All Saints Sunday Sat., Nov. 3, 2018, 5:00 pm Sun., Nov. 4, 2018, 8:30 am Sharing the Shepherd s Love With All of God s Children Giving God My Worship And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another (Hebrews 10:24-25) Gathering The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. PRELUDE On the altar are the Holy Communion kits which are taken to our people who, for a variety of reasons cannot attend worship, to help them share in our celebration of the Lord s Supper. WORDS OF WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP Come and let us be church together. In sorrow and joy, in poverty and abundance, we come. Come and let us be church together. In caution and eagerness, in silence and proclamation, we come. Together, in Christ, we become a church bearing God s great love into the world. In Christ, we come and worship. People who don t regularly attend a worship service may say they can worship God as they walk in the woods, stroll with their dog, swing in the hammock, or tee up on the first hole. They may say that Sunday is the only day left to mow the lawn, wash clothes, shop, be with their spouse for quiet time, or drive the kids to play soccer. Each of these activities can take on a holy shape through worship, but they can t substitute for gathering regularly with other believers in worship to celebrate the presence of God in our lives. The benefits of gathering for worship and hearing God s word are incredible. Each of us, gathered in Christian community, is a part of the body of Christ. Together, we build each other up into Christ, encouraging one another on the journey of discipleship to become more like Jesus. Gathered in worship, focused on the living God, we are reminded why God created us in the first place to be in relationship with God and with each other.

ORDER FOR CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who calls us into an everlasting hope, who guides us to springs of the water of life, who enlightens us with the spirit of wisdom. Amen. One with the communion of saints in all times and places, we confess our sin against God and one another. Silence for reflection and self-examination. O God, our merciful redeemer, we confess the ways we live only for ourselves. We fail to see you in our neighbor s face. We turn our ears from voices that cry out. We pass by the hungry and the oppressed. In your great mercy, forgive our sin and strengthen us for service to all in need; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you, and for his sake, God forgives you all your sin. Blessed are you! Rejoice and be glad, beloved people of God. Amen. FIRST SCRIPTURE READING Hebrews 10:19-25 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Page 241 in the pew Bible STEWARDSHIP MOMENT SECOND SCRIPTURE READING 2 Corinthians 8:1-7 Page 434 in the pew Bible The Apostle Paul begins this section of his letter to the church in Corinth with the words, We want you to know, brothers and sisters Paul then goes on to commend the church in Corinth for living generously as stewards of God in ways similar to the churches in Macedonia. As the church of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bismarck, ND, how might the Apostle s words help us grow in our faith with Abundant Joy, Overflowing Generosity in the days, weeks, months and years of our faith journey. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION What do you value most about worship with other believers? Where in worship do you glimpse God s abundance and generosity? In what ways is the offering an expression of worship? HYMN OF THE DAY Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee Sunday, November 4 th Psalm 24: The earth is the Lord s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters. Nothing at all existed until God founded it. Our stewardship under God implies that we are morally accountable to him for treating creation in a manner that best serves his objectives. It is not leverage, for you can already do all things you choose. It is not a bribe, for you already love us. It is not our dues, for Christ Jesus already paid those forever. What it will be is our thanks because thanks and giving go together well. And we are very, very thankful. Amen. OFFERING AND ANTHEM Our offering is a significant act of worship, and we now worship God through our giving. God s mission and ministry for Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is completely dependent upon your faithful and generous giving. OFFERING SONG Create in Me a Clean Heart Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with your free Spirit. (Ps. 51:10-12) LITANY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR ALL SAINTS You are the God of Abraham and Sarah, of Moses and Miriam. You are the God of Joshua and Deborah, of Ruth and David. You are the God of the Old Testament priests and prophets, of the New Testament apostles and martyrs. You are the God of our mothers and fathers, the God of our children, and the God of all people through all the generations. For those we have known and loved, who by their faithful obedience and steadfast hope, have shown the same mind that was in Christ Jesus, we praise you, O God. For those who have touched our lives so deeply, especially those who now rest from their labors those whom you have welcomed into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light... names are read... and other precious ones whom we now name in our hearts before you. Keep us grateful for the witness of the saints of all generations. Make us, like them, eager to follow the way of Christ. Then at the last, bring us with them to share in the inheritance of the saints of life. Amen. PREPARATION FOR THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Pour out your Holy Spirit on all of us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the life and love of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed, renewed, and blessed by your love and grace. By your Spirit, make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at the heavenly banquet, with the saints of your church and the many blessed by your grace. Through Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and forever more. Amen. 5

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. THE MEAL Jesus died and rose again, and in this sacrament, our Lord Jesus is present with us in a special and mysterious way.
