The Spirit-Filled Marriage // The Spirit-Filled Spouse I. THE HOLY SPIRIT-LIKE ROLL OF WIVES THE GENESIS OF WIVES // Genesis 2:18-23 And the LORD God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him." 19 Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him. 21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 23 And Adam said: "This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." HELPER = Hebrew word Ezer (Ay-zer) Helper One who supplies what is lacking; Power to accomplish a task. Ephesians 5:31-32 "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. UNDERSTANDING THE HOLY SPIRIT-LIKE ROLE OF WIVES // A. THE ROLE OF THE HOLY SPRIT AND WIVES AS COMPLETORS AND HELPERS 1. COMPANION // John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever.
2. COMFORTER // Paracletos // meaning called to ones side or one who pleads another s case before a judge; defense attorney; intercessor. 3. COUNSELOR // Spirit of Truth John 14:17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 4. CONVICTOR // John 16:7-8 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment. 5. CONNECTOR // The Holy Spirit is represented by a dove = PEACE John 16:13-15 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare i to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare i to you. B. THE FIVE-FOLD NATURE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND WIVES
1. GENTLE // 1 Peter 3:4 rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. Galatians 5:23 fruit of the Spirit is gentleness 2. PURE // His first name is Holy // never using wrong methods to try to achieve a result. fruit of the Spirit is goodness 3. POSITIVE // The Holy Spirit is like a cheerleader always trying to encourage us and even when He s warning or convicting us He s positive. The fruit of the Holy Spirit (personality) is joy kindness 4. PATIENT // The Holy Spirit is committed to the long-term process of us becoming who we should be. Fruit of the Spirit is longsuffering faithfulness 5. GRACIOUS // The Holy Spirit is forgiving and treats us better than we deserve. Fruit of the Spirit is love peace II. THE CHRIST-LIKE ROLE OF HUSBANDS Ephesians 5:25-29 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the
word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 1. ANOINTING REPRESENTS THE GLORY OF GOD 1 Corinthians 11:7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 2. ANOINTING REPRESENTS THE HOLY SPIRIT 3. ANOINTING REPRESENTS THE OFFICES OF PROPHET, PRIEST, AND KING A. UNDERSTANDING THE NATURE OF ALL THREE ROLES 1. PROPHET // Responsible for accurately and faithfully delivering the God s Word. 2. PRIEST // They were intercessors between God and man to solve problems and to reconcile relationship. 3. KING // Appointed by God to rule over the people as His representative. B. HOW JESUS FULFILLED ALL OF THESE ROLES 1. PROPHET // Jesus was the incarnate Word of God. Matthew 4:4 He said it was more important than food. He lived the Word before us and told us what God had to say. 2. PRIEST // Jesus healed sick people and compassionately did miracles. He even sacrificed His own life to make things right with God. He still intercedes for us before God. He is a sensitive and sacrificial priest. 3. KING // Jesus was a gentle and humble authority figure who washed feet and related on a personal level. His authority was different it was for the benefit of others not self. C. SUMMARIZING THE THREE ROLES AS IT RELATES TO BEING A HUSBAND
1. PROPHET // A man who diligently seeks to hear God s voice and know God s Word for the benefit of his family. This includes living a life consistent with Scriptural standards and values (not perfect, legalistic, dominant just dedicated). Ephesians 5:2-27 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 2. PRIEST // A man who sensitively and sacrificially meets his wife s needs and helps her deal with spiritual, emotional, physical, family and financial issues. Ephesians 5:28-29 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 3. KING // A man who is the servant leader of his home. Treating his wife as an equal and with the focus on her well-being. He is the initiator of decision making and problem solving but without dominance. Ephesians 5:23-24 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. 24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.
