THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE 470 There Is a Longing in Our Hearts Glory to God There is a longing in our hearts, O Lord, for you to reveal yourself to us. There is a longing in our hearts for love we only find in you, our God. For wisdom, for courage, for comfort: Hear our prayer. In weakness, in fear: be near; hear our prayer, O God. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS (Please sign the Friendship Pad and pass it to others in your pew.) The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will set me high on a rock. I believe that I shall see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD! Manuel Rossetti *HYMN 275 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Glory to God Called to be a light on the hill, we boldly proclaim and serve Christ, the Hope of our changing world. PRAYER OF CONFESSION (seated, in unison) O God our stronghold, we confess that fear has too often dampened our resolve and kept us from fully trusting and following you. We have shrunk back from the challenges to which you have called us. We have given up when faced by opposition, even when we know you have called us to go forward. We have allowed fear of disappointment to neutralize our hope. Mighty God, forgive us. Strengthen us by your Word and Spirit with the courage to seek your kingdom, by means of your power, for the sole purpose of your glory. For we pray in Jesus name. (silent confession) Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON Friends, believe the good news of the gospel: in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE 71 Surely, It Is God Who Saves Me Glory to God Surely, it is God who saves me; I will trust and not be afraid. For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense, and God will be my Savior. Make God s deeds known among the peoples; see that they remember that the Lord is exalted. Sing the praises of the Lord, for God has done great things and this is known in all the world. *PASSING OF THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you! And also with you. ORDINATION QUESTIONS QUESTIONS TO THE CONGREGATION Elder: Elder: There are different ways of serving God. But it is the same Lord who is served. God works in different people in different ways. But it is the same God who achieves the divine purpose through all. Each one is given a gift by the Spirit, To use it for the common good. Together we are the body of Christ, And individually members of him. Do we, the members of this church, accept this partner in our common ministry as a ruling elder chosen by God through this congregation to lead us and serve among us in the way of Jesus Christ? We do. Do we agree to encourage him, to respect his decisions, to follow as he guides us, and to honor and support his service, as together we all serve Jesus Christ, who alone is Head of the church? We do. *PRAYER FOR ORDINATION (congregation please stand) All Presbyterian teaching and ruling elders are invited forward to share in the laying on of hands. *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE 749 Come! Live in the Light! Glory to God Come! Live in the light! Shine with the joy and love of the Lord! We are called to be light for the kingdom, to live in the freedom of the city of God! SCRIPTURE READING Joshua 1:1-9 1 After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses assistant, saying, 2 My servant Moses is dead. Now proceed to cross the Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the Israelites. 3 Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, as I promised to Moses. 4 From the wilderness and the Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, to the Great Sea in the west shall be your territory. 5 No one shall be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you. 6 Be strong and courageous; for you shall put this people in possession of the land that I swore to their ancestors to give them. 7 Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to act in accordance with all the law that my servant Moses commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, so that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to act in accordance with all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall be successful. 9 I hereby command you: Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go. Matthew 10:16-33 16 See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17 Beware of them, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues; 18 and you will be dragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them and the Gentiles. 19 When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you at that time; 20 for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. 21 Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; 22 and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 23 When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next; for truly I tell you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. 24 A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; 25 it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household! 26 So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. 27 What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. 28 Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 And even the hairs of your head are all counted. 31 So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32 Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven; 33 but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven.
