As you know, Holy Apostles Parish now owns and is responsible for maintaining four church buildings and all that goes with them. That means that we have four church roofs, (all 4 leak!), four organs, four parking lots and, well you get the picture. With all that maintenance, our maintenance staff, Jeff and Len, do a wonderful job of trying to keep up with all of it but there are things that they simply cannot do. Larger projects require the need for outside contractors and good planning. Although our parish is financially sound and we do have money in the savings, that money could go very fast if we try to fix everything and we could easily go broke in less than a year. Some of the issues that we face with leaking and plaster damage will be covered by insurance but many of the other issues are basic maintenance, wear and tear issues. As I try to stay on top of things, I realize that with the new grouping, I will be taking on two more church buildings as well as school buildings. Holy Apostles Parish will not be financially responsible for those buildings. As separate parishes, St. Sylvester and Holy Angels Parishes would be responsible for all costs relative to their buildings but I, as the administrator will be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of them. I share this with you because I am instituting a Buildings and Grounds Committee, to help. The committee will be made up of volunteers from the parish who have professional backgrounds with buildings, construction, engineering, architecture, HVAC, electricians, plumbers, etc. I have already been contacted by a parishioner who volunteered to lead this group but if you have a background in one of these fields and are interested, willing and able to help, it would be greatly appreciated. The committee will determine when and how often they want or need to meet and will visit our four church buildings and the parish center to develop a plan on how best to address improvements, needed repairs and the like, now and in the future. The primary task of this committee is NOT to do the actual physical work itself but to meet with and work with contractors and vendors the parish would hire. Please consider this important ministry to our parish and call me at the parish to discuss any questions you may have or to join the team. I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot, Together we can do great things. ~Mother Teresa Fr Steve Celebrations of Life s Journey Together we welcome All who were baptized into our Faith & Family Congratulations to the Parents & Godparents Our sympathy is extended to the families of: Eternal Rest James Shannon Grant to Them O Lord, And Let Perpetual Light shine on Them. arrival. Recently, one of our priests asked in his homily "What is a sign of a healthy parish?" His answer to this question was "the number of outreach programs" that a parish offers. I had the wrong answer to his question. My answer was long lines to go to the Sacrament of Confession. Actually, it probably was not the wrong answer, only a different answer. Vinny Flynn has an excellent book titled "7 Secrets of Confession" and if you love Jesus and want to go to Heaven, this book falls into the category of a "must read". As it states on the back cover of this book, "To many Catholics, Confession is just a means to an end: cleaning up from sin so we can receive Communion." Flynn's book will help the reader to understand the Sacrament of Confession better, and to realize the importance of this great gift from God. After all, a Sacrament is an outward sign, instituted by Christ, to give Grace. Jesus gave us the gift of Confession, as well as the six other Sacraments. He gave them to us because they are meant to be a great help to us during our short life on Earth. I love the Sacrament of Confession and I reference my love for this Sacrament in my homilies often. Flynn's book is not as intense of a read as the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and that may be a good thing for some people. This book beautifully helps the reader to love the Sacrament as much as he does, and as much as I do. I proudly give this book Five Beards out of Five Beards, because reading it will bring you to a deeper love of God. Live Jesus in our hearts... Forever! The Church as a Family Most of us have been active church members for our entire lives. We attend mass each week and receive the Eucharist, the most important element of our faith. We receive the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation, and Matrimony within our church. Lately, however, I have had a new realization about our own parish. A few weeks ago, I expressed some personal trials that my husband and I are going through following his cancer diagnosis and the beginning of his treatment. Since then, we have been overwhelmed by the support and encouragement he has received from fellow parishioners, our priests, and the parish staff. The prayers, verbal good wishes, candles lit in his honor, cards, mass requests, healing masses, calls, and offers of help have been so heartwarming. At the most recent Festival of Praise, Fr. Mike Ackerman said that suffering builds community more than joy because people relate to the woundedness of another. In our case, truer words were never spoken. I am touched by the people whose names I don t even know that approach me and ask about my husband. They are concerned because they always see us together and now I ve been attending mass alone. And then it occurred to me that being a member of a parish is even more than attending mass and receiving the sacraments. It is being part of an extended family where our joys are celebrated and our sorrows are shared. We have never felt this connection to our faith community more profoundly than we do now. It s easy to become embittered in today s world. The news seems to report nothing but the worst accidents, shootings, drug overdoses, terrorist attacks, political unrest even negative things about our church. But, even though it s rarely reported, good people exist in this world and good deeds are done every day. And my husband and I are finding so many of these good people right at Holy Apostles Parish. Sincere thanks to all of you for caring. Jesus is always there for us and we believe He will do the impossible in our lives. No matter how strong or determined we are, there are times when we must pull our strength from heaven. In October we will once again celebrate the love we have for Jesus and ask that He strengthen our faith. The service includes an inspirational homily, witness talk adoration of the Blessed Sacrament ending with benediction. An open invitation is extended to you to join with us in celebrating the love of Jesus. Father Steve Kresak will be presider and homilist for this service and Marty Murawski will share with us as witness speaker. You are encouraged to visit the Festival of Praise page in the Holy Apostles Parish website. There you will find many pictures and videos of previous services. Our Praise Band Repertoire now includes more than forty beautiful songs and continues to grow monthly. Many of these songs can viewed and listened to on You Tube as performed by the recording artist. I NEED YOUR HELP! In just a few short weeks, our parish life will change yet again. It will be a change for the good as we begin a new and exciting journey with our brothers and sisters at St. Sylvester and Holy Angels Parishes. I am so very impressed and inspired at how you all are opening your minds and hearts to the possibilities of our future together. I am so very much looking forward to my own new journey with the wonderful parishioners of St. Sylvester and Holy Angels. As you can imagine, there are always anxieties and concerns, fears and trepidations involved in meeting and getting to know new people and different ways of doing things. I too have them but I learned from all of you that the love we share for one another soothes and dispels those feelings quickly. I am asking all of you to join me in reaching out to anyone you may know from Holy Angels or St. Sylvester Parishes to let them know how excited we are about our future together. Let them know that, regardless of what they may hear from others, I am very excited and honored to be joining them on this journey and, like you, am looking forward to meeting them and making new friends. I truly believe that God has wonderful things waiting for us and I can t wait to begin discovering them together as we; Let Go and Let God! Fr Steve Our Nar-Anon meetings are every Monday. We hope to continue to grow our family and provide support for those who are dealing daily with the insanity of addiction; those who are friends or family members of an addict. As we have stated, these meetings are to provide input to those who are suffering and wish to learn through the experiences live by others. Remember we maintain anonymity. Speak if you want or just listen, but please come. Nar-Anon website: http://www.nar-anon.org Every Monday, 6:30 pm In the St. Albert Chapel area 3198 Schieck St., Baldwin, PA Invite someone to Mass next weekend! To: From: This is a personal and hear elt invita on from me and my family of Holy Apostles Parish to come and join us each weekend at Church. Will you come and pray with us? WE ARE SAVING A SEAT FOR YOU! THE DEACON S CORNER Deacon s Corner Fr. William A. Stickle, Catholic chaplain at the VA Medical Center in Richmond, VA, unearthed the following quotation by Martin Luther, found in Luther s Works, Vol. 54, Table Talk: God is not a God of sadness, death, etc., but the devil is. Christ is a God of joy, and so the Scriptures often tell us that we should rejoice. A Christian should and must be a cheerful person. This is one reason to always start your day with prayer. Rejoicing is a spiritual weapon to fight off attacks on our mind. It is a spiritual weapon given to us from God. It works like an anti-venom for the poison of pain and sadness. Rejoicing is not about trying to pretend you re not in pain. It is believing that through the discipline of rejoicing, the peace of God which surpasses all understanding may visit you when it is most needed. (see Philippians 4:7) Rejoicing just may impart to you the supernatural ability to deal easier with your pain. Paul reminds us with the Holy Spirit: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). I must say that Philippians 4 is a very good set of scripture to pray and meditate with when we need reminded of what God can do for us, especially when we are dealing with pain and sadness. Always be full of joy in the Lord: I say it again, rejoice!
