Lutheran Church of Our Saviour GOOD TIDINGS Vol. 18 No. 11 Pastor Katie s Corner In early October, one of the moms from our preschool and I hosted a Mom s Morning In for other mothers of preschool students. Held in the sanctuary, we simply provided coffee, donuts, space for conversation, and a craft to do with our hands: Vision Boards. The idea behind Vision Boards is similar to what the Biblical prophets did: paint pictures, construct images, and give words to remind God s people of the long view, that God is preparing a future for us, that we are rooted in the past and growing toward what lies ahead. I invited the moms to collect words and pictures from old magazines, whatever would help them maintain a broad perspective while in the daily throws of parenthood. I decided to make a Vision Board for LCOS, cutting out images and words that I hoped would represent what grounds us, what s essential for us, and what God is calling us to. That s my newsletter note for this month. Take a look at it on page 2. One thing that didn t make it into my Vision Board but to which God is certainly calling us is to be a Ministerial Fieldwork congregation for a local seminary student. Read more on page 7! This newsletter testifies to that! Many congregants and heads of ministry teams have seen Kayleigh s skill and asked her to help with communications for their events, with mailers for campaigns, and with other projects. While Kayleigh is more than happy to help, please remember that she has many other weekly duties in helping to prepare our worship bulletins each week. If you have a project for Kayleigh to work on with your ministry, please get it to her at least two weeks before you need it completed. The earlier, the better! As we grow in congregation and communications, we need to be conscious of her time and many responsibilities. 2
3 GOOD TIDINGS Vol. 18 No. 11 A Monthly Message from our Council President: November is a time in which we remember to be thankful for the many blessings we received during the previous year. Those blessings will be different for each of us some will be life changing, while others might seem insignificant and hard to remember. But, as we consider the world around us, we realize how fortunate we are to live in a country that is free, peaceful, and full of promise and opportunities. Sometimes we dwell on the things we don t have, the opportunities that were missed, or the difficult times with friends or loved ones, but in November we should take time to remind ourselves to be thankful for the many blessings we do have, the goals that we accomplished, and the good experiences we have had with friends and loved ones. However, some of us may have had a difficult year and find it hard to be thankful for anything that occurred in this year. In those times, friends, family, and the LCOS church family are there to help those among us who are having difficulty. Remember also, that Pastor Katie is available for consultation and to offer the resources of LCOS. November also ushers in the beginning of the holiday season. We look forward to Thanksgiving dinner with friends or relatives, days off from work and school, holiday shopping and the joys of Christmas. Vol. 18 No. 11 GOOD TIDINGS 6 Called Centered Confirmed Many of you probably remember the pony express, every member visit, or Crown Financial. This year we call our stewardship program Called Centered Confirmed Called because God calls us to lead our lives in response to His gifts. Centered to remind us how LCOS provides a focal point for our Christian lives. Confirmed to validate what LCOS needs to support the mission. LCOS has been a part of the Richmond community for almost forty years. We have been bigger, and we have been smaller. But, we have stayed together as a family and made a difference in this community. Many programs or ministry teams are not supported directly by budget dollars, but they are important for the congregation and the community. The budget supports the pastor, the staff, and the buildings. And in turn, they lift up the congregation through love and worship and education. Finally, after being embraced by LCOS, the members can join together inside or outside the four walls of the church and support God s mission on earth, here in Chesterfield. Handmade quilts from the Ties That Bind have been seen around the world. People that use CARITAS as a helping hand have stayed in our church. The Giving Tree Preschool serves the community as a Christian school for two-, three-, and four-year-old students. Our Craft Fair has been around for twenty years, and the profits provide funds for the community and for this church. There are so many ways to plug in to a program here, including the new intergenerational S.O.F.T. program on Sunday mornings or the Young Families team that meets to support and entertain each other. All of this is supported, directly and indirectly, by the stewardship of the members. There are several events scheduled over the next two months. I hope you will listen to and enjoy stories and articles about them. It will culminate in a shared meal in December to share the results and take a look into the future. 7 GOOD TIDINGS Vol. 18 No. 11 Meet Lucas Cochran, LCOS New Ministerial Fieldwork Student! The Synod has recommended LCOS as the site for Ministerial Fieldwork for Lucas Cochran, a candidate for ordained ministry in the ELCA, and they have recommended Pastor Katie to be his mentoring supervisor. This is a high honor which speaks well of our congregation s health and of our pastor. What is Ministerial Fieldwork? Ministerial Fieldwork is a program of all ELCA seminaries in which the seminary student is assigned to a local ELCA congregation where they will worship every Sunday and participate in the life of the congregation through worship leadership, teaching, two preachings, visits, regular lunches with congregants, and supervision sessions with the pastor. It lasts for two semesters (Fall and Spring). Ministerial Fieldwork is a requirement not for a degree but for ordination in the ELCA, so even Lutheran students who attend a non-lutheran seminary must complete it. Ministerial Fieldwork is not an Internship! If you remember Vicars Ann, Jeff, Jean, or Stacey, then you will understand that Lucas is not our Intern or Vicar. His duties are limited to Sunday mornings only, with the occasional weekday visit. His work with us is preparation for being a Vicar somewhere, someday. Meet Lucas: My name is Lucas Cochran and I am twenty-seven years old. I am originally from Northern Virginia, specifically from a town called Annandale. I have lived in Richmond for the last nine-ish years, ever since my freshman year at Virginia Commonwealth University. While at VCU I obtained a degree in Homeland Security and Religious Studies. Over the years I have worked numerous odd jobs before I became a student at Union Presbyterian Seminary and a candidate for the ELCA. Some of those jobs were barista at Starbucks and a mailman for the Henrico area. I got married on June 3 rd this past summer to Wendy Cho and we have a wonderful dog named Ke$ha. When I am not studying for seminary I spend my free time building models and spending time with my wife and dog. Lucas home congregation is Christ Lutheran in the Lakeside area, where he s led a popular Bible study and is completing a term on their council. We will welcome Lucas in worship on November 4.

11 GOOD TIDINGS Vol. 18 No. 11 OUTREACH History of the Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother The Christmas Mother Program began in 1972, when Miss Lucy Corr, then Director of Social Services, found she could no longer handle the special needs of those in our area who would not have Christmas without help. Miss Corr enlisted the aid of volunteers from the community to raise funds, secure sponsors and promote the purpose of the Christmas Mother Program which is to ensure that no child in our community is without food, new toys, and clothing, and no elderly person is forgotten as we celebrate the holidays. A Christmas Mother has been chosen each year to represent and promote these ideals. Each year since 1972, this committee of volunteers with the generous support of their community, has provided assistance during the holiday season to those who are less fortunate in Chesterfield County and the City of Colonial Heights. LCOS Christmas Mother Gifts Once again, our church will joyfully participate in the Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother Program. This will be our 25th year helping families at Christmas with gifts of clothing, toys, and beautiful quilts sewn with love by our Ties That Bind ministry. We will be sponsoring 4 families this year. The tree containing ornaments with the families desires will be in the narthex until November 25th. If you would like to participate in this program, please do the following: Select an ornament from the tree and record your name on the sheet provided. Return item gift wrapped with the ornament taped to the outside of the package. Only tape the ribbon portion of the ornament, as we need to be able to read both sides of the ornament. Avoid gift bags if possible. They are difficult to pack up for delivery. All gifts need to be returned to the narthex by Sunday, December 2nd. 19 GOOD TIDINGS Vol. 18 No. 11 Virginia Synod Disaster Response Fund At its meeting on October 18, the Virginia Synod Council created the "The Virginia Synod Disaster Response Fund" to provide support for disaster relief through the Virginia Synod. By creating the Virginia Synod Disaster Response Fund, the Virginia Synod now has a way for congregations and individuals to make donations to help with damage like the flooding experienced at Ascension, Danville. If you or your congregation would like to make a donation to the Virginia Synod Disaster Response Fund to help support Ascension, Danville and future disaster relief, please donate following the online instructions below.
