20th Sunday After Pentecost Saturday, October 6, 2018, 5:00 pm Sunday, October 7, 2018, 8:30 am Sharing the Shepherd s Love With All of God s Children Welcome to Worship! Today s gospel combines a saying that makes many of us uncomfortable with a story we find comforting. Jesus saying on divorce is another of his rejections of human legislation in favor of the original intent of God s law. Jesus rebuke of the disciples who are fending off the children should challenge us as well. What does it mean to receive the kingdom of God as a child does? Gathering The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. PRELUDE On the altar are the Holy Communion kits which are taken to our people who, for a variety of reasons cannot attend worship, to help them share in our celebration of the Lord s Supper. WORDS OF WELCOME ENTRANCE HYMN Dearest Jesus, at Your Word GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. HYMN OF PRAISE Thank You for your ministry today! Preaching Pastor Bob Caranicas Presiding Sunday Pastor Craig Schweitzer Anthem Peder Gulleson Organist / Pianist Saturday VIcki Martel Sunday Karen Petersen Interpreter for the Deaf Cori Quist Available by request SALUTATION PRAYER OF THE DAY Sovereign God, you have created us to live in loving community with one another. Form us for life that is faithful and steadfast, and teach us to trust like little children, that we may reflect the image of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Word God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. OLD TESTAMENT READING Genesis 2:18-24 Page 2 in the pew Bible Genesis 2 stresses that people are not meant to live in isolation but in relationship. Out of love for humanity, God creates them male and female, to provide companionship for each other and to become with each other one flesh. The Hebrew words used here are ish (man) and ishshah (woman). The Word of the Lord. 3

STEWARDSHIP MOMENT Sunday, October 7 th Psalm 8:3-5 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor. Generosity inspires more generosity, and so at the heart of being a good steward is noticing God s generosity towards us. Each one of us has been abundantly blessed in ways we often fail to notice. This reading reminds us to open our eyes to God s generosity, so that God s generosity to us might give birth to God s generosity through us. NEW TESTAMENT READING Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12 Page 234 in the pew Bible Quoting from the psalms, this passage from Hebrews emphasizes that Jesus, the one through whom God created everything and who sits at God s right hand, is also the one who experienced human suffering and death in order to blaze the path of salvation for us. The Word of the Lord. GOSPEL ALLELUIA (please stand) Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia. (John 6:68) GOSPEL READING Mark 10:2-16 Page 46 in the pew Bible Jesus announced and enacted in history the new reality of God s surprising activity. These two stories demonstrate this new reality: Women and children are accepted and valued, not dismissed as inferior to adult men. The Gospel of the Lord. Take them, offered in great thanksgiving, and use them to set a table that will heal the whole creation; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Light. Amen. 4

OFFERING AND ANTHEM Our offering is a significant act of worship, and we now worship God through our giving. God s mission and ministry for Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is completely dependent upon your faithful and generous giving. OFFERING SONG Create in Me a Clean Heart Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with your free Spirit. (Ps. 51:10-12) THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Preface. It is indeed right, our duty we praise your name and join their unending hymn: THE SANCTUS WORDS OF INSTITUTION THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. 5

INVITATION TO HOLY COMMUNION THE MEAL Jesus died and rose again, and in this sacrament, our Lord Jesus is present with us in a special and mysterious way. Everyone is welcome at the Lord s Table and may receive the gifts of bread and wine. Gluten-free wafers and grape juice are available by request. HYMN All Are Welcome 6

GATHERING SONG No Greater Love ORDER FOR CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, the one who fashions us, the one who heals us, the one who reforms us again and again. Amen. Let us confess our sin, calling for God s transforming power. Silence for reflection and self-examination. Source of all life, we confess that we have not allowed your grace to set us free. We fear that we are not good enough. We hear your word of love freely given to us, yet we expect others to earn it. We turn the church inward, rather than moving it outward. Forgive us. Stir us. Reform us to be a church powered by love, willing to speak for what is right, act for what is just, and seek the healing of your whole creation. Amen. God hears our cry and sends the Spirit to change us and to empower our lives in the world. Our sins are forgiven, God s love is unconditional, and we are raised up as God s people who will always be made new, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Our Lord, on the night when he was betrayed, took bread, broke it and said, Take this bread and eat it; do this to remember me. Do this to remember me! Following our Lord s command and responding to our need for forgiveness, we come!
