THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH TRINITY SUNDAY JUNE 11, 2017 DEACON ORDINATION GATHERING RINGING OF THE SANCTUS BELL Some traditions ring Sanctus Bells to call worshippers attention to the holy. MEET THE DEACON CLASS OF 2020 MARGIE BILLINGER I have been a member since 1981, when I joined with my two school age children. My son and his children now live in Brooklyn and my daughter in Oakland, CA. During my 36 years at Binkley I've been happy to serve as a youth group leader, Christian Education Committee member, Habitat for Humanity work trip volunteer, CROP Walk organizer and walker, Church Council member, Banner Committee, Usher coordinator, Fellowship Co-Chair, and Deacon. How fortunate I am to be involved with Binkley and our dedicated congregation. BARBARA DAVIS I have been a member of Binkley for over 40 years, drawn by the music program and the warm reception by Bob Seymour and the congregation. Now a retired middle school teacher, I previously taught Sunday and Bible schools, served on the diaconate, church council, worship, yard sale, Binkley Preschool, and church archive committees, as well as an Interim Minister Search Committee. I am currently active in the chancel choir and on the Personnel Relations, church and music library, and children s worship committees. I enjoy reading, visiting US national parks, foreign travel, gardening, and walking my dog Bodie. My husband Mike and I have raised three sons. TOM FEWEL Joy and I joined Binkley 35 years ago. We ve met some of our best friends here and experienced your love in times of joy and periods of sorrow. We enjoy fellowship with church members, their families, and others here: people we ve known for years and folks we re just meeting. We ve taught church school classes, worked on committees, served on the diaconate. My current committee participation includes Grounds, Outreach, and Peace and Justice Action. I appreciate our differences and our unity. I m grateful for celebration and meditation in our sanctuary, chapel, and gardens. Binkley is my spiritual home. LYN LAMONT I moved to North Carolina from California in 1996 but didn't find Binkley until 2003. Being a member at Binkley has enriched my life, and lately it has been enriching the lives of my two great-grandsons as well, for which I am very grateful. I have served on the Banner Committee for many years; I've been a church school teacher, but now am just the Snack Lady and Bell Ringer in the church school area. I have been on the Fellowship Committee officially and unofficially for years also and have made lots of coffee. I am also on the Christian Formation Committee AND the Adult Christian Formation Committee. Last but not least, I am part of the Fine Arts Committee. My daughter, Tracy Berger is a member at Binkley and a former deacon; I also have five grandsons. Now, as a deacon, I hope to follow the good examples of the many deacons whom I have encountered over the years. Thank you. ANNE WINFIELD In our welcome statement, Binkley members proclaim: as followers of Christ we embrace mutual care and service. We further employ that call with our mission to build a compassionate and joyful community. You exemplified that as you walked with Bob and me through our painful transition. Now it is my turn to show my infinite gratitude as an incoming deacon. Now, who am I? (Isn t that something we all wonder?) Here is a pertinent snippet: I am a North Carolina native returned home after working as a nurse in New York City and in Appalachia. In New York, I thrived by seeing Broadway shows and discovering the classic New York deli, and in those southern mountains I survived by clogging and hiking, and hearing old time music and witchy tales. I finished my calling as a nurse (I was in the first BSN Class at Duke ) by working with burn patients and in home care. How fortunate I was to experience responses to survival and deliver unusual caretaking. I am humbled and grateful for this. There s more, but we can share about each other over coffee and pecan pie.
