WELCOME TO BINKLEY! Binkley Baptist Church is a community of faith on a journey that calls for questioning, humility and conviction. As followers of Jesus, we embrace spiritual growth, mutual care, and service, assured that as we serve our neighbors, we joyfully serve God. Intentionally inclusive, we welcome people of all races, sexual orientations, and cultures, respecting diverse religious experiences within the church and beyond. We invite others to join us in our commitment to peace, justice, and care for creation. In a spirit of Christian love, we welcome you. The mission of Binkley Baptist Church is building compassionate and joyful community, freely exploring spiritual paths, and pursuing justice and peace in the way of Jesus. ANNOUNCEMENTS SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER Feb. 13, 6 pm, Fellowship Hall: The annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper will be led by the youth of the church and includes a terrific Talent Show. All ages are encouraged to sign up on Dale s door or in the narthex for the talent portion of our night together. The cost for the meal (pancakes, waffles, sausage, fresh fruit and beverages) is $9.00 for 6th grade and above and $7.00 for 5th grade and below. Any net proceeds from the meal will support our Baptist Youth Camp scholarships. The meal begins at 6:00 pm and is served until approximately 6:45 pm when the Talent Show begins. Please join us for this night of fellowship through food, fun, and frivolity! ASH WEDNESDAY: Feb. 14: The Lenten journey to Easter begins with Ash Wednesday on February 14. There will be opportunities for worship at Binkley that day--noon in the Chapel (service will last 20 minutes in time for Primetimers at 12:30) and at 7 pm in the Sanctuary. Both services include the imposition of ashes. The later service at 7 pm features choir and sermon from Dr. McFaul. THINKING ALOUD ABOUT LENT: You may find it helpful to have conversation about the practices you as an individual, or as a family, want to try during the 40 days of Lent. Stephanie Ford and Dale Osborne will "hold the space" for such a conversation: offering ideas, listening, and sharing about spiritual practices for all ages. As individuals and as families, it is helpful to have someone witness intentions named out loud, and having your ministers pray with you about them. On Ash Wednesday, there will be 20-minute sessions available from 5:00-6:40 pm. Sign up on Stephanie Ford's door. PRIMETIMERS: Feb. 14, 12:30 pm, Lounge: The Primetimers lunch and program on February 14 will have a romantic Valentine s Day flavor. The K&W catered meal will begin at 12:30 followed by Dale Osborne s presentation and humble recollections of his and Suzy s 1985 appearance on The Newlywed Game. The cost for lunch is $9. Please register on Dale s office door or by contacting the church office by Monday, Feb. 12. SECRET PALS FOR LENT: Have you ever wanted to solve a mystery all on your own? If you do, why not sign up for Secret Pals, beginning February 18? A young person gets matched up with an adult, and each one of you chooses your own code name. Then you send your pal a note each week, telling just enough about yourself to encourage your pal s curiosity without giving away who you are. You ll find a mailbox system in the Narthex for your notes. All will be revealed at the Easter Breakfast. If you are interested, contact Dale or Stephanie. The Koinonia Group welcomes you to participate in this new way to get to know one another. BARBEE S AT BINKLEY: Combined Worship & Luncheon, Feb. 18: Bishop Gene Hatley and his congregation from Barbee s Chapel will come to visit on February 18. We will have a covered dish lunch for them following the worship service. Please bring your favorite casserole, salad, fried chicken, dessert, or anything you d like to share. This is always a great time to renew friendships with our friends from Barbee s. EARTH MINISTRIES: FOCUS ON THE CLIMATE Featuring Jean Ritock, Citizen s Climate Lobby: Feb. 20, Pocket Room 7 8:30 pm: Please join us and learn more about how Jean is helping to advance the volunteer work of the Citizen s Climate Lobby locally and what is happening nationally to address one of the most important issues of our time. To learn about the Citizen s Climate Lobby in advance of the gathering, go to: https://citizensclimatelobby.org

DANA TRENT BOOK DISCUSSION: Feb. 20, 7 pm, Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill: Kate Rademacher & J. Dana Trent discuss their new books and explore the meaning of Sabbath Can rest revolutionize our lives and the world? Two local authors will discuss the ways that embracing a regular practice of Sabbath rest has changed and challenged them. They will explore the when, why and how of Sabbath, and invite participants to share their own experiences and questions about how to find balance and renewal in a 24-7 culture. Join them for a lively discussion! SAVE THE DATE: Lunch with Syrian Friends, Feb. 25, 12:15 pm, Fellowship Hall (donation received). WOMEN'S RETREAT: Mar. 9-11, Trinity Center, Salter Path, NC: Join us this year as we consider the theme, "Inhabiting a Woman's Soul," with help from two medieval women mystics, Mechthild and Teresa. Just a short walk from the ocean, you'll have time to meander, relax, listen, make art, pray, and worship -- and also play and laugh -- with friends new and old. Registration forms are available outside Stephanie Ford's store and through a link found in the newsletter or Friday Update. Please note that registration is first come, first served. Deadline: February 28. A YARD SALE ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE CHURCH COUNCIL: After discussion of pros and cons, the Church Council reluctantly voted at its January meeting to postpone the Binkley-Barbee yard sale until 2019. Barbee's Chapel is in agreement. With Binkley's 60th Anniversary celebration, the Fall Festival, and likely Seymour Symposium all scheduled shortly after the usual time of the yard sale, this seemed to be asking too much from our volunteers. A further advantage to the postponement is that it puts the biennial Yard Sale and biennial Fall Festival in alternating years going forward. We hope this doesn't create too much of a problem for all the treasures you'd been planning on donating this year. Oh, for a Binkley warehouse! Sonnie VanSant, Moderator STEWARDSHIP UPDATE: Many thanks to all of us who took part in the Walk of Faith last Sunday. It was a truly moving event to see and a genuine reflection of our calling to be God s Hands on Earth. As of this writing, we have received 115 pledges of financial support for 2018, and more pledges will certainly be forthcoming. If you have not yet pledged, please contact the Church Office to receive a Pledge Card so that we can know what resources are available to plan for use in our Ministries in 2018. So, again, thank you for your love of Binkley Church and your commitment to its support in 2018. Stewardship Committee: Biruta Nielsen, Wayne Price, Fred Schroeder, Sonnie Van Sant, Mark Walters THE MUSIC MINISTRY WELCOMES LEXI BATCHELOR TO THE CHORAL SCHOLAR PROGRAM Lexi Batchelor is a junior at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, majoring in psychology, and music with a concentration in vocal performance. Her main area of musical study is opera and classical music; however, she also enjoys singing musical theatre pieces (and karaoke!) She has been studying music since she was young, starting with taking piano lessons through elementary school and playing the flute in middle school band, before switching to voice lessons in 8 th grade and joining numerous choirs. She plans to continue to pursue performance after undergrad while going to graduate school for clinical psychology. She is from Raleigh, NC, and was actually raised an NC State fan before finding her home at UNC for undergrad. She loves church music and is so excited to be a part of the Binkley Baptist community!
