AN EPISTLE FROM PHILIP SHOWERS OF BLESSING When I was a boy and my father prayed, he would often pray for good health for our family. At the time I did not have the wisdom of my father, and I questioned why he prayed for our good health because I was young and healthy. I assumed that I would always be in good health. So, I took my good health for granted. Now, that I have grown older and have more aches and pains, I see how foolish I was particularly at this time as I face open heart surgery as most of you know. The key words here is assume and taking for granted. How many times do we make assumptions only to find out how foolish we have been to have made those assumptions. How many times have we taken things for granted only to find one day a deep black whole in our lives because we lost what we assumed we had or had taken for granted what we once had. When we lose that which we had taken for granted, the floor often drops out beneath us because we are now deprived of what we had once counted on and had been so central and important to our lives. This can often make us lonely and desperate wondering what we should do or where should we go. The most effective way to keep this from ever happening to us is to daily give thanks for God s many blessings, beginning with God Himself. In fact, how many times do we take God for granted? How many times do we fail to build our personal relationship with Jesus who is our friend and who sustains us and draws near to us in our hour of need. Do we seek Jesus in our daily lives as Jesus seeks you and me? What about our personal relationships. Do we give thanks for our family, friends, church family and even our work as well as serving our community? Each of these things are blessings from God who sustains us, gives us strength, and has give us salvation through our Lord and Savior, Jesus. Do we daily give thanks for each and every one of these blessings in our lives? Yes, the wonderful hymn, Showers of Blessings, certainly rings true (cont. next pg)

AN EPISTLE FROM PHILIP SHOWERS OF BLESSING There shall be showers of blessing: This is the promise of love; There shall be seasons refreshing, Sent from the Savior above. Refrain: Showers of blessing, Showers of blessing we need: Mercy-drops round us are falling, But for the showers we plead. There shall be showers of blessing, Precious reviving again; Over the hills and the valleys, Sound of abundance of rain. There shall be showers of blessing; Send them upon us, O Lord; Grant to us now a refreshing, Come, and now honor Thy Word. There shall be showers of blessing: Oh, that today they might fall, Now as to God we re confessing, Now as on Jesus we call! There shall be showers of blessing, If we but trust and obey; There shall be seasons refreshing, If we let God have His way. (cont. next pg)

AN EPISTLE FROM PHILIP SHOWERS OF BLESSING We rarely sing this hymn anymore. It has become lost and forgotten among the many other hymns. Maybe we need to clip theses verses out, and use them in our daily devotions. For how can God bless us if we do not remember and rejoice in the many blessings we have already received? My friends in Christ, let us never take God or our Savior Jesus, or the blessings we receive daily through our family, friends, church family, or neighbors for granted. It is in giving thanks and living thankful lives each and every day that you and I will truly be showered with God s many blessings. Let us not assume or take God s blessings for granted. Let us live thankful lives for the greatest blessing of all His Son Jesus and the gift of His salvation and saving grace. May the peace and blessing of God in Jesus Christ be with you all. Philip
