Reflections: Welcome Talking About School Violence with Our Kids In his masterfully written book, The Screwtape Letters, C.S Lewis attempts to explore what he called, the mystery and seduction of violence. It s a saying that has always captivated me that violence is something we humans are drawn to. The scriptures certainly seem to lend credit to his observation, but we are called by Jesus to remake the history of the world in the image of God. School violence impacts everyone, no matter how old or young, we feel the very real pain that comes with shooting tragedies like Sandy Hook and Marjory Stoneham Douglas High School. How we talk with our children about school violence is therefore important and can help them to mourn and feel safe. Experts who deal with this type of violence encourage parents and teachers alike to follow specific steps when talking with kids off all ages about the reality of school violence. 1. What does your child already know? Kids find out a lot more about the world than we give them credit for. In many cases the information they have might be inaccurate and lead to feelings of insecurity. 2. Let kids know that it is okay to talk about scary or sad events. Share your feelings with them to help them see that feeling scared or angry are natural responses to such acts. Ask them how they feel about the event. 3. Reassure your child that they are safe. Teachers, parents, administrators and local law enforcement work tirelessly to kids safe. 4. Share information with your kids about the event, but take into consideration their age when doing so. 5. Experts also encourage parents to keep up their daily routine in the face of violence. This might require some changes like turning off the news repeated exposure to violent events can cause anxiety in kids and adults. All of this might seem too simple when dealing with crisis, but it s a start. I remember growing up as a child and listening to my favorite afternoon show Mr. Roger s Neighborhood. Mr. Roger s always had a way of explaining difficult issues in words kids could understand. As a father and adult I still find two pieces of his wisdom important today. In the face of tragedy Mr. Roger s would say, The world is full of good people. It was something his mother taught him. He also knew a good hug would go a long way in healing. God Bless Deacon Chris Winter Flu Season In light of the flu epidemic we will suspend distribution of the cup. Those people assigned as Eucharistic Ministers please check in before Mass. Also, during the Sign of Peace if you do not want to shake hands just wish others a verbal Peace be with you.

This year Steubenville East will be held July 13th through the 15th at UMass Lowell. Over three thousand teens from New England will attend. This is a powerful weekend for teens. Life is so crazy and so many people are pulling our teens in different directions. This weekend is time to stop and listen for God s voice. This is not to say this is a quiet weekend. There are moments of prayer and moments of amazing music and dancing. Our teens really bond in this weekend. St. Patrick s is going to take a group of teens with the Diocese of Worcester. The weekend costs $275. This includes busing to and from UMass, 2 T-shirts for the weekend, lodging in the dorms and all food. These conferences sell out every year.
