Props and Prep: portable CD player 1 recordable CD sciency props from the stage Day 1 Professor Wilma s Daily Discoveries Bible Point: Jesus gives us the power to be thankful. Before the skit, record a voice saying thank you, thank you over and over. Or during the skit, have a person from the back of the room repeating thank you, thank you from a microphone so it looks like it s a recorded voice coming from the portable CD player. P O I N T E R Although we ve written Professor Wilma s Daily Discoveries for a woman, you could have a man play the role and change the character s name to Wilmer. Leader: Ok, friends, I ve got a special treat for you today. She s an old friend of mine who likes to teach science, do experiments, and make new discoveries. I thought she d be the perfect guest for Power Lab, where we re discovering Jesus miraculous power. Everyone, let s give a warm Power Lab welcome to Professor Wilma! (Professor Wilma enters carrying a CD player. The recording is playing thank you, thank you over and over. She bows a few times. After the kids applause dies down, she turns off the CD player.) Leader: Professor Wilma, uh what s this? (Leader motions to the CD player.) Professor Wilma: Ah, the compact disc player. Isn t it just an incredible scientific invention? (Professor Wilma takes out the CD.) A red laser beam shoots onto this metal shiny disc called a CD, and the CD player reads all of these little grooves on the CD and Copyright 2008 Group Publishing, Inc., P.O. Leader: I know how a CD works, Professor Wilma. What I m wondering is why does it keep saying thank you, thank you over and over again? Professor Wilma: Oh, that! Well, you see, I give lots of talks at schools, and students are always applauding when I come on stage. So, this amazing CD player and CD help me to be thankful to everyone! Leader: Professor Wilma! That s not being thankful! Professor Wilma: Maybe you didn t hear it clearly. (Pushes the play button so the CD plays again) You see, it s saying thank you. That s what thankfulness is all about. Leader: (Slaps forehead) You can t get thankfulness from a CD player! True thankfulness comes from your heart from Jesus. Jesus gives us the power to be thankful! Professor Wilma: (Getting flustered, reacting to the kids Aha! ) Oh my goodness! What was that? Leader: We re learning that sometimes it s hard to be thankful but that Jesus gives us the power to be thankful! And we say Aha! because that s an important discovery! Professor Wilma: Aha! So thankfulness comes from the heart from Jesus. (Looks down at her chest, then speaks excitedly) I need to do some biology experiments to discover the root of thankfulness in the pericardial region Leader: No, Professor Wilma. That s not what I Professor Wilma: (Begins collecting science supplies from the stage props, loading her arms so she can t see) I ll head to the lab and begin experimenting right away. There might be a formula or a molecular structure using these items Leader: Uh, Professor Wilma Professor Wilma: (Excited and happy) I ve got to see just where Jesus gets his power. (Professor Wilma exits before Leader can stop her.) Leader: (To kids) Maybe we can straighten her out tomorrow. I wonder what kind of formula she ll create with all that stuff! Props and Prep: bucket with some dirt in it garden hose Day 2 Professor Wilma s Daily Discoveries Bible Point: Jesus gives us the power to help others. Leader: So today at Power Lab, we re going to learn all about Professor Wilma: (Rushing onstage carrying a bucket with some dirt in it) OK, I ve got the dirt! Leader: (Flustered) Professor Wilma, you scared me! Well kids, once again, I give you Professor Wilma! Let s give her a hand. Professor Wilma: (Bowing repeatedly) Thank you, thank you! (To Leader) See? I ve been practicing truly being thankful! Leader: Just like we learned yesterday! Jesus gives us the power to be thankful. I m very proud of you, Professor Wilma. But what are you doing with a bucket of dirt? Copyright 2008 Group Publishing, Inc., P.O. Box 481, Loveland, CO 80539. www.group.com/vbs Day 2 23

Professor Wilma: I was talking to kids in one of the Lab Crews, and they told me that today you re learning how Jesus gives us the power to help others. Leader: Yes, that s right. Professor Wilma: The power to help others just think of all that power! Well, I also heard that Jesus once used mud to help someone. Leader: (Looking into the bucket) Oh, I don t like where this is going. Professor Wilma: So I brought some dirt and figured I could mix it up right here Leader: Um, Wilma Professor Wilma: (Runs offstage and comes in with a hose with one end attached offstage) I ve got my lab assistant, Harold, over there. (Waves offstage) OK, Harold, let er go! Leader: (Shouting in the direction of offstage) No, Harold! No! (Leader gingerly grabs the bucket from Professor Wilma and sets it aside) It s true, Jesus used mud to help the blind man see. But you don t want to make any mud in here. Professor Wilma: Oh, but I really do! (To the kids) And I know the kids do, too! (Grabs the bucket and holds it over her head) Then I could dump it all over me or you and we d have all that power! Leader: But it wasn t the mud that did it. Professor Wilma: Excuse me? Leader: You see, Jesus has incredible power because he s God s Son. Professor Wilma: (Sadly looks into her bucket) So the power isn t in the mud, but in Jesus? Leader: Exactly. Jesus gives us the power to help others. Professor Wilma: I used to be such a smart scientist, but all this information about Jesus is sure new! (Shouting towards offstage) OK, Harold! Wind up the hose and let s go home. (Reacting to Harold, apparently getting ready to spray her) Very funny, Harold. Put down the hose. (Heads offstage) Harold! Harold! Aaaagh! Copyright 2008 Group Publishing, Inc., P.O. Props and Prep: cardboard shoe box with a lid chair Day 3 Professor Wilma s Daily Discoveries Bible Point: Jesus gives us the power to be brave. Leader: OK, Lab Crews, do you remember Professor Wilma? Well, I ve been told that she just entered the building. And you know how Professor Wilma always likes to make a big entrance? Well, today let s surprise her. Be very quiet, and when I jump out and say today s Bible Point, you say Aha! really loud. (Leader ducks down. Professor Wilma slowly walks in, cradling the cardboard shoe box.) Leader: (Jumps up and shouts) Jesus gives us the power to be brave! Day 3 29

(Professor Wilma jumps and screams, drops her box so the lid falls off, and scuttles behind the nearest large prop. Leader laughs but then realizes that they might have scared Professor Wilma a little too much.) Leader: Oh, I m sorry if we scared you too much, Professor Wilma. We just meant to surprise you! You were really paying a lot of attention to your box which seems to have opened. Professor Wilma: (Slowly comes out from behind the prop with a look of fear on her face) It came open? (She peers into the opened, spilled box) But I had a lab mouse in there. I was taking him to do an experiment. If he s not in the box (Suddenly terrified) that means he s loose! Eeek! (Professor Wilma jumps up on a chair) Leader: I ll help you. (Searching the floor) Where is the little guy? Professor Wilma: (Pointing toward the kids) I saw him run over there! (Leader looks in the area she pointed.) Professor Wilma: (Points across the room) He just ran over there! Oh, hurry and find him! (Leader runs to other side of the room and looks under kids chairs.) Professor Wilma: (Looks down and screams) He s right here, near the box! Leader: (Pretends to scoop something back into the box) Professor Wilma! I found your mouse and put him in his house. You can come down now. Professor Wilma: (Catching her breath) Oh, that mouse scares me so much! I ve never been very brave around little, tiny, creepy-crawly things. (Gingerly takes the box back) Are you sure the lid is on tight? Leader: Well, did you know that Jesus gives us the power to be brave? (Wilma startles at the Aha! and nearly drops the box again.) Professor Wilma: (Gulp) He does? I could really use a little of that power right about now. Leader: Yep! Jesus can help you to be brave whenever you re afraid even if you re afraid of a little mouse. Professor Wilma: So, maybe I ll go put him in a big, strong, sturdy cage with three locks. When I come back, will you and the kids help me learn more about Jesus giving me the power to be brave? Leader: Sure, we will. (Wilma grips the box and walks offstage) Walk carefully; I d hate for you to trip and...(offstage Wilma drops the box and screams)...drop the box again. 30 Sonic Sing & Play

Props and Prep: clear water bottle with a cap Kool-Aid (a bright color like orange, green, or blue) Day 4 Professor Wilma s Daily Discoveries Bible Point: Jesus gives us the power to live forever. Fill the bottle with Kool-Aid. Place the bottle in Professor Wilma s lab coat pocket. Professor Wilma: (Walks in quickly and stands by Leader) I heard about the Bible Point you re learning today! Leader: Jesus gives us the power to live forever! Professor Wilma: That s the one. It made me think of my new discovery live-forever formula. It s right here in my pocket. (Professor Wilma pulls out the bottle filled with blue liquid.) Leader: I see. And you think you can live forever just by drinking that? Professor Wilma: Of course. Leader: Professor Wilma would you really want to? Professor Wilma: Hmmm? Day 4 35

Leader: Well, let s say that you could live forever here on earth. After a while, your family and friends who love Jesus would all be in heaven with Jesus, but you d still be stuck on earth! Professor Wilma: (Thoughtfully) I wouldn t have anyone to play Ping-Pong with, or build molecules with or anything. (She begins to sniffle sadly.) Leader: (Hugging Professor Wilma) When we say that Jesus gives us the power to live forever, that means living forever with Jesus in heaven, not here on Earth. Living forever here on Earth would get boring and sad. Professor Wilma: So as long as I know and love Jesus, I don t need this? (Tosses the bottle to Leader.) Leader: (Twisting off cap and sniffing it) It smells like Kool-Aid. Professor Wilma: Well, I didn t really have time to make a live-forever formula. That s actually just part of my lunch. Now, if you ll excuse me, I m off to discover a turkey sandwich on wheat bread! (Plucks the bottle from Leader and quickly exits.) Leader: Bye, Professor! Whew! Kids, I think Professor Wilma is discovering a lot about Jesus miraculous power! Let s discover more about Jesus power today, too, at Power Lab! 36 Sonic Sing & Play

Props and Prep: newsprint pad on a stand yardstick Day 5 Professor Wilma s Daily Discoveries Bible Point: Jesus gives us the power to tell others about God. Leader: Boys and girls, ladies and gentlemen, without further ado, you ve gotten to know her all week, and she s discovered a lot about Jesus miraculous power right along with you join me once again in welcoming Professor Wilma! (Leads kids in applause for Professor Wilma.) Draw an involved, confusing chart on a sheet of newsprint (see photo). Include lots of circles, squares, X s, and dotted lines. Flip the sheet over the back so kids can t see it. Professor Wilma: (Quickly enters carrying a yardstick) Thank you, thank you! (She bows repeatedly.) I have an amazing plan to help us do what we re learning today. Leader: We re learning that Jesus gives us the power to tell others about God. Professor Wilma: Exactly! Here s my plan. (She flips the sheet of newsprint so kids can see the confusing design.) Leader: What s with all the lines, circles, and squares? I m confused! Professor Wilma: Well, just listen, and I ll describe the plan. (She uses the yardstick and points from one direction to the next on the newsprint.) Let s say this X is you! You will proceed from this point to the opposite point and start to tell this person about God. (She shakes her head, then uses the yardstick to point to a couple of other areas Day 5 41

on the newsprint.) No, no, no I mean, you will gather three people, and you all will go to this point before proceeding to a new location. Along the way...(starts to get flustered.) Leader: Professor Wilma, wait a minute! It really doesn t have to be this hard and confusing to tell others about God! Professor Wilma: Really? Leader: Really. You can tell others about God by being nice to them and saying something simple like God loves you. (Leader pats Professor Wilma s shoulder.) God loves you, Professor Wilma Now, you try it! Professor Wilma: (Walks to a child and pats the child s shoulder.) God loves you, [child s name]. (To Leader) That wasn t so hard! Leader: Right! You can also show God s love by giving someone a hug. (Leader hugs Professor Wilma.) Now you try it! (Professor Wilma goes to another child and hugs the child.) Professor Wilma: That wasn t so hard, either! Leader: Jesus gives us the power to tell others about God! Professor Wilma: We don t need this confusing plan to tell others about God. (She tears off the sheet of newsprint, crumples it, and tosses it over her shoulder.) It s easier than we think. (To kids) You kids try it. Hug someone who s sitting by you. Greet the person by name and say, Jesus gives you the power to tell others about God! Leader: (After a moment) Thanks for stopping by, Professor Wilma. Kids, let s give another big round of applause for Professor Wilma: Jesus! (Professor Wilma leads kids in applause, then exits.) 42 Sonic Sing & Play
