Kobonal Haiti Mission Operational Support Kobonal, Haiti 2700 N. Military Trail, Suite 240 PO Box 273908 Boca Raton, Florida 33427-3908 1-800-914-2420 PROJECT 1099...I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me. Acts 26:17-19 WWW.CROSSCATHOLIC.ORG

Project Synopsis Description Provide operational support for Father Glenn Meaux s Kobonal Haiti Mission, which is meeting the needs of the poor for food, water, housing, education and spiritual nourishment. Purpose To bring the hope and love of Christ to desperately poor communities. Location Kobonal, a rural village in the Haitian Diocese of Hinche. Cost $273,241 helps cover the Mission s operational expenses such as salaries, office supplies, a new vehicle, fuel for transportation, and general maintenance and cleaning. Highlights Father Glenn Meaux established Kobonal Haiti Mission to serve and evangelize a rural community plagued by poverty and spiritual darkness. Fr. Meaux takes a holistic approach to helping the poor, focusing on both material and spiritual needs through a variety of programs. The Mission provides sturdy new houses and small plots of farmable land to families living in squalor. The indigent elderly are invited to the Mission to receive monthly food staples such as corn, beans and oil. Income generation is encouraged through microloans and job training. Wells are dug to bring fresh and plentiful supplies of water to local communities. The Mission s Catholic primary school opens the door of education to children who would otherwise remain illiterate. Fr. Meaux relies on Cross Catholic Outreach to help cover the Mission s operating expenses. 1

The Need When Father Glenn Meaux came to Kobonal, Haiti, in 1989 as part of a three-person missionary team, he was deeply disturbed by the magnitude of the people s poverty. Hardly anyone in the village owned the land that their fragile huts occupied. No one grew gardens or raised animals. Very few employment opportunities existed for the unskilled, uneducated population, so very few were able to earn money to buy food. Families were facing starvation. During mango season, the ripened fruit got snatched up so quickly, mothers resorted to boiling green mangos for their children to eat. The only source of water was polluted with bacteria and parasites. As a result, many children died from the chronic diarrhea caused by drinking bad water. There was no agriculture, there was no irrigation system, there was just literally no hope at the time, Fr. Meaux says. One of the first things we did immediately upon our arrival in Kobonal was to identify all those throughout the area who were elderly, destitute, widowed, orphaned, mentally disabled, or ill. In the process, the missionaries found that the material poverty was matched by spiritual poverty. The family unit itself had been reduced to grandmothers struggling to care for babies who had been abandoned by their parents, and teenage girls who were having children every year by different men. Fr. Meaux quickly learned how Kobonal had earned its reputation as the darkest corner of the Diocese of Hinche. He says, We found a people enslaved and oppressed by black magic priests and their ritualistic services. Voodoo was prevalent, superstition was strong, and Zombiism and human sacrifice were practiced. 2

The Transformation Begins After Fr. Meaux established the Kobonal Haiti Mission, the people gradually began to abandon their Voodoo practices and embrace the Catholic faith. Fr. Meaux says, The families started a neighborhood watch and would ask anyone moving into the village, Where are you from? What are you planning to do here? and would tell them, If you practice Voodoo you can t participate in the Mission. It took about three years for the Mission to really begin to penetrate Kobonal s spiritual darkness with the light of Christ. Fr. Meaux recalls the time a woman, nine months pregnant, ran to the Mission in terror of her husband who was a practitioner of black magic. He wanted to sell his wife to the house of the devil, where they were going to open her stomach, take the baby, and sacrifice it, Fr. Meaux says. We stayed up and prayed in front of the blessed sacrament all night and the next morning. Later, while the wife remained in hiding, the husband came to Fr. Meaux and confessed, This Voodoo is doing nothing for me. People come to your Mission and life gets better for them. I want to become Catholic! For more than two decades, Kobonal Haiti Mission has continuously worked to improve the material and spiritual condition of people living in Kobonal as well as the greater Diocese of Hinche. Throughout these years living among our Haitian brothers and sisters, we have clearly seen God s hand hard at work, Fr. Meaux says. Teenage pregnancy in Kobonal has been reduced by 96 percent. The ritualistic priests and their related services have disappeared. Jesus has been doing a mighty work of restoration of souls among all of us here. Hundreds and hundreds of people have experienced dramatic positive changes in their lives. God has changed hearts. There now exists among our families a vibrant faith community, whose members reach out in loving service to others. Since 2003, Fr. Meaux has relied in large part on support from American Catholic benefactors through Cross Catholic Outreach to successfully implement his plans for a better, more prosperous Haitian community. 3

Ministry Description The following is a summary of the work being accomplished at Kobonal Haiti Mission in partnership with Cross Catholic Outreach: HOUSING ~The central and largest form of outreach, Fr. Meaux s housing program provides sturdy cement homes for Kobonal s poorest families. Each home has a cement floor, four rooms, cinder block walls and a secure, galvanized steel roof. Families also receive a half-acre of land so they can grow crops for food and income, another path to self-sufficiency. FOOD FOR THE ELDERLY ~ The Mission distributes monthly food staples like corn, beans, oil and soap to the elderly and destitute in the community. These supplies are like a life-line for the poor and elderly, many of whom are home-bound and have no income to buy food. CLEAN WATER ~ The community s poorest families often rely on contaminated rivers or shallow wells for water. To help improve health and sanitation, Kobonal Haiti Mission digs wells to provide clean water that won t make families sick when they use it for drinking, cooking and bathing. EDUCATION, JOB TRAINING AND MICROENTERPRISE ~ Kobonal Haiti Mission empowers the community so its people can improve their lives and provide for their families. The ministry operates a school so children can learn reading, writing and arithmetic, the skills they ll need to find jobs as adults. Through microloans and job training, the mission assists men and women as they run small businesses and gain the skills to secure jobs with a living wage. A loan of just $150, interest-free for three years, is enough to help a family start and keep a successful small business. This highly effective program that fosters self-sustainability has freed numerous families from poverty s grip and helped them become productive members of their community. SPIRITUAL FORMATION ~ Fr. Meaux s church has become a pillar of the community. Hundreds of people attend Mass each Sunday for spiritual nourishment. I come here every Sunday. I never go anywhere else, says 80-year-old Jantylis Augustin. 4

Help Now! The life-changing work of Fr. Meaux and the Kobonal Haiti Mission would not be possible without continuing support from compassionate American benefactors. This year, Cross Catholic Outreach has committed to helping cover the ministry s operational expenses. This support will ensure that Fr. Meaux has the funds for important needs such as salaries, office supplies, a new vehicle, fuel for transportation, and general maintenance and cleaning. But we cannot fulfill our promise without you! A gift to Cross Catholic Outreach will keep the candle of hope burning in Kobonal, Haiti. By acting now, you can help ensure that Fr. Meaux has the resources to minister to the material, spiritual and emotional needs of families at the Mission. You will be an instrument of God s blessings and a witness to the compassion of Christ s Church for the least among us as we work together to be the hands and feet of Jesus to the poor. So much has been accomplished, yet the need remains great. Won t you join us today in your prayers and giving and help Fr. Meaux give the people of Kobonal, Haiti, hope for a better future! Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. Luke 12:33 Our Promise to You! 100 percent of the proceeds of this appeal will be used for this project. In the event that we receive more than needed to fund this project, additional gifts will be used for other urgent needs in the ministry. 5 [tm1301] 2700 N.
