WELCOME TO CHRIST CHURCH We are glad you are with us as we celebrate the lives of the faithful departed in this beautiful Requiem Mass. The liturgy is filled with the promise of new life for all, the hope of resurrection for those who have gone before us. We are indeed part of a great cloud of witnesses to Jesus Christ who makes us saints through the power of the Holy Spirit. For many people, the death of a loved one can bring with it a heavy burden of grief. Our faith assures us of a life to come a life whose form and ways we may not comprehend or understand, but a continuation of our being in the presence of the One God who created us in love. It is our hope that today s worship experience will help us all to release the old or fresh grief we each may hold. We invite those who are visiting today to join us regularly for our Holy Eucharist services on Sundays at 8 am and 9 am, or for Evensong services offered at 3 pm. Parish life at Christ Church includes a dynamic music program, Christian formation classes for all ages, plenty of fellowship opportunities, and a variety of ways to serve in the church and to reach out beyond our walls to help those in need. 2 christ church grosse pointe

The Announcements The Reverend Andrew Van Culin THE ENTRANCE RITE The people stand at the procession as the choir sings. Opening Acclamation In the midst of life we are in death; from whom can we seek help? From you alone, O Lord, who by our sins are justly angered. Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy and merciful Savior, deliver us not into the bitterness of eternal death. Lord, you know the secrets of our hearts; shut not your ears to our prayers, but spare us, O Lord. Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy and merciful Savior, deliver us not into the bitterness of eternal death. O worthy and eternal Judge, do not let the pains of death turn us away from you at our last hour. Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy and merciful Savior, deliver us not into the bitterness of eternal death. Celebrant The Collect for the Purity Celebrant Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Introit & Kyrie Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Te decet hymnus, Deus in Sion, et tibi redetur votum in Jerusalem. Exaudi orationem meam: ad te omnis caro veniet. Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord: and let light perpetual shine upon them. Thou, O God, art praised in Sion; and unto thee shall the vow be performed in Jerusalem. Thou that hearest the prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. all souls requiem 3

The Collect for the Departed Celebrant The Lord be with you. b œ œ œ œ And al - so with you. Let us pray. Almighty God, we remember before you today all who have died; and we pray that, having opened to them the gates of larger life, you will receive them more and more into your joyful service, that, with all your saints, they may share in the eternal victory of Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE WORD OF GOD The people are seated for the readings. The First Reading Lamentations 3:17-26, 31-33 My soul is bereft of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is; so I say, Gone is my glory, and all that I had hoped for from the Lord. The thought of my affliction and my homelessness is wormwood and gall! My soul continually thinks of it and is bowed down within me. But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, says my soul, therefore I will hope in him. The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. For the Lord will not reject for ever. Although he causes grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love; for he does not willingly afflict or grieve anyone. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 121 I lift up my eyes to the hills; * from where is my help to come? My help comes from the Lord, * the maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved * and he who watches over you will not fall asleep. Behold, he who keeps watch over Israel * shall neither slumber nor sleep; The Lord himself watches over you; * the Lord is your shade at your right hand, So that the sun shall not strike you by day, * nor the moon by night. chant: H. Walford Davies 4 christ church grosse pointe

The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; * it is he who shall keep you safe. The Lord shall watch over your going out and your coming in, * from this time forth for evermore. The Second Reading Romans 8:14-19, 34-35, 37-39 All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, Abba! Father! it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God. Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The people stand for the hymn. Hymn Lord, we have come at your own invitation O quanta qualia all souls requiem 5

The Gospel John 11:1, 3, 17-19, 30, 32-36 Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, Lord, he whom you love is ill. When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles away, and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Lord, come and see. Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, See how he loved him! The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The people are seated at the invitation of the preacher. The Homily The Reverend Andrew Van Culin A brief period of silence is observed for reflection on the sermon. Pie Jesu Pie Jesu, Domine, dona eis requiem; dona eis sempiternam requiem. Blessed Jesus, Lord, give them rest: grant them thine eternal rest. The people stand. The Apostles Creed Celebrant In the assurance of eternal life given at Baptism, let us proclaim our faith and say, I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. 6 christ church grosse pointe

The Prayers of the Gospeller I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We pray for the founders and first benefactors of this parish church, and for all those who, in every generation, have supported and sustained our common life in word, deed, and gift. We pray for all those who have died by human violence and human neglect. We pray for all those who have died by their own hand. We pray for all those who have died alone, or without faith, or in fear, or in great pain, or suddenly and unprepared, or without prayer. We pray for all those who have died from diseases at present incurable. We pray for all who have died in war or conflict. We pray for all those who have died through natural disaster or force of nature. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. We pray for all those whom we love, but see no longer. The names of the dead will be read, after which you may add names either silently or aloud. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. We pray for the bereaved, for those whose grief is old and heavy, for those whose grief is fresh and devastating. We pray for all those here today who mourn the death of one they love. We pray for ourselves, and for the grace to face each new day in faith. And we pray that we may be prepared for our own deaths in confidence and without fear, in sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Celebrant Almighty and everlasting God, our maker and redeemer, grant us, with all the dead, the sure benefits of your Son s saving passion and glorious resurrection, that, at the last day, when you gather up all things in Christ, we may, with them, enjoy the fullness of your promises; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Peace Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The people greet one another with a sign of God s Peace and then are seated. all souls requiem 7

The Offertory The people remain seated while the offering is collected. O Lord Jesus Christ, King of Glory, deliver the souls of all the faithful departed from the hand of hell, and from the pit of destruction; deliver them from the lion s mouth that the grave devour them not; that they go not down to the realms of darkness. Let Thy holy Michael, leader of hosts, bring them forth into Thy holy splendor, which Thou hast promised in ages past to Abraham and his seed. Sacrifice and prayer do we offer to thee, O Lord: do thou accept them for the souls departed, in whose memory we make this oblation: and grant them, Lord, to pass from death unto life: which thou hast promised in ages past to Abraham and his seed. The people stand as the gifts are presented. Hymn By all your saints still striving Nyland 8 christ church grosse pointe

THE HOLY COMMUNION The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord; who rose victorious from the dead, and comforts us with the blessed hope of everlasting life. For to your faithful people, O Lord, life is changed, not ended; and when our mortal body lies in death, there is prepared for us a dwelling place eternal in the heavens. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus & Benedictus Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus. Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The people kneel or remain standing. The Celebrant continues Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. all souls requiem 9

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Celebrant We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. The Lord s Prayer Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread A period of silence is kept. Celebrant 10 christ church grosse pointe

The Invitation The people are seated. To receive Communion, come to a Communion Station or to the Altar Rail at the direction of the ushers. If you wish to receive a blessing rather than Communion, cross your arms over your chest this will alert the priest of your request. Agnus Dei Lux Aeterna Libera Me Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem, sempiternam requiem. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant them rest. Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine, cum sanctis tuis in aeternum, quia pius es. Requiem aeternum dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. May eternal light shine, O Lord, upon them, for endless ages with thy blessed ones, for thou art gracious. Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord: and let light perpetual shine upon them. Deliver me, O Lord, from death eternal in that day of trembling: when heaven and earth shall be shaken: when thou shalt come to judge the world by fire. Trembling taketh hold upon me, and fearfulness, as the sifting draweth on, and the wrath to come. Ah, that day, the day of anger, of calamity and misery; ah, that great day, and exceeding bitter! Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord: and let light perpetual shine upon them. The Postcommunion Prayer The people stand. Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty God, we thank you that in your great love you have fed us with the spiritual food and drink of the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ, and have given us a foretaste of your heavenly banquet. Grant that this Sacrament may be to us a comfort in affliction, and a pledge of our inheritance in that kingdom where there is no death, neither sorrow nor crying, but the fullness of joy with all your saints; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. all souls requiem 11

The Conclusion Celebrant The Lord be with you. And also with you. Rest eternal grant to all the departed, O Lord; And let light perpetual shine upon them. May all the dead, through the mercy and love of God, rest in peace and rise in glory. Amen. The people remain standing as the choir sings. In Paradisum In paradisum deducant angeli; in tuo adventu suscipiant te martyres, et perducant te in civitatem sanctam, Jerusalem. Chorus angelorum te suscipiat, et cum Lazaro quondam paupere aeternam habeas requiem. In paradise may the angels receive thee: at thy coming may the martyrs attend thee, and take thee up into the holy city, Jerusalem. There may the angelic chorus attend thee, and mayest thou, with Lazarus, once a beggar, have eternal rest.
