Suresh, Director, BVB, Dr. P.V. Nath of the United Kingdom, Smt. Rohini Chakravarthy, Director, Sandipani Gurukula The convocation for the first semester of Bhavan's Bhagavad Gita course on November 9, could not have sought for a more competent person to deliver the customary address and give away the certificates to students than Dr.P.V Nath of the United Kingdom. The function was jointly organized by the Bhavan and the Sandipini Gurukula. Dr. Nath who is a medical doctor, practicing general medicine in England is no stranger to Bhavan. He is an ardent student of the Gita and has the credit of organizing a global conference on Gita under the Bhavan s auspices some years ago. It was a great success though the event didn t continue for more than a couple of years. Conveying his own reflections on the sacred text, Dr. Nath observed, the essence of Gita is to make one realize that humans actually are the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Race Course Road, Bangalore - 1. Atman, (Tattvam Asi) or the divinity within the physical frame, which is the subtle body made up of flesh, bones, the mind and intellect. Unfortunately, he explained how the humans identify themselves with the body, resulting in the inescapable ego or I-ness. Drawing his inference from various Hindu religious texts like the Upanishads or Yoga Sastras, Dr. Nath elucidated that there were four paths for realization. They are the Karma, Jnana, Bhakti and Dhyana. One may Dr. P.V. Nath being honoured with a bouquet; from left : Sri. K.G. Raghavan, Hon.Secretary, BVB, Sri. H.N. Suresh, Director, BVB, Smt. Bhavan s Kodagu Vidyalaya has made big news again. Under the guidance of their teacher, Smt P S Ponnamma, five enterprising students of the School have arrived at a far-reaching invention to harness power using coffee husk. The unique project was exhibited recently in the 21 st district level competition of the National Science Congress in Madikeri. Vidyalaya students P S Shreya, Veeksha Dechamma, Mohammad Faizan, Ishika and Devarath Kunda found out that husk of coffee and paddy mixed with sawdust, when burnt in a gasifier produces steam. The steam in turn can be used to generate electricity an ideal substitute for coal. To go about the procedure the mix of husk of coffee and 3 BHAVAN S KV PUPILS INVENT WAY TO MITIGATE POWER SHORTAGE paddy as also sawdust are made into inflammable briquettes which are burnt in a gasifier for generating electricity. Briquettes moving out the machine According to an estimate, each ton of dry coffee bean yields 40 per cent of husk. Paddy husk and sawdust are as easily available in the district. And the power generated by the briquettes would most certainly do well to mitigate the non-ending power problem of the district. There is another advantage in this project. As it is well-known, coffee husk could pose a threat to environment as it contains toxins
such as caffine, tannin and polyphenols in large quantities. True, the State Pollution Control Board has laid down stern laws to contain coffee related pollution in Kodagu. Yet it can t be said that there is no breach of the law. Hence the discovery of the Bhavan Kodagu Vidyalaya boys is invaluable.
