God s Loving Plan Vocabulary Guide

Introduction This document is intended as a supplementary reference to provide parents with information about the learning and teaching detailed in God s Loving Plan for each stage across the primary school. In addition to a summary of the core learning for each stage you will find information about the vocabulary introduced and details of the corresponding learning. Information regarding the vision behind God s Loving Plan and suggestions on how you can support your child at home can be found in the guide for parents available at: http://sces.org.uk/download/guidance-for-parents-on-gods-loving-plan/

Primary 1 Early level In Primary 1 the children will use their senses to explore God s gift of creation. They will learn that the gift of the seasons, weather, plants, animals and people who help them are signs of God s love for them. Each child will begin to recognise their individual gifts and talents, demonstrating an awareness that we all have similarities and difference but we are all unique. As the children familiarise themselves with their school community, they will begin to investigate what it means to belong to the wider Catholic community. In listening to a variety of Scripture stories the children will develop their understanding of the Christian values of friendship, caring and love and will learn the importance of these values in building positive relationships. I can explore ways in which we learn to share and care for our friends. I understand that if we hurt our friends feelings, we can say sorry and be forgiven and that mending a relationship can make it stronger. They will learn that God created all human beings, male and female, in His image and likeness. As they develop their understanding of hygiene and looking after their bodies the children will be introduced to the anatomically correct language for the human body. As many of the children will be preparing for the reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation at this time, much of their learning is centred around Jesus command to love God and neighbour. In God s Loving Plan the children learn about the gift of free will and that through prayer God can help them to make good choices. I will make him a help mate) and I can understand that God s plan is for people to live in relationship/community, rather than living in isolation.

Primary 5 Second Level In Primary 5 the children will read the stories of creation, reflecting on the fact that God saw his creation as being good. The pupils will be encouraged to see the beauty of God s creation in themselves and will begin to recognise that their growing bodies are part of God s plan for them. By investigating members of society, who use their gifts and talents to improve the lives of others, the children will reflect on their own gifts and talents and how they can be used for the common good. As they develop their understanding of the rights and responsibilities, to which they and others are entitled, the children will learn of the importance of showing respect for the rights of others in their daily lives. They will learn that God has a plan for them and that the physical, emotional and spiritual changes that they experience as they approach adolescence are part of this plan. After reflecting on their development from birth, the pupils will explore the physical and emotional changes which girls and boys begin to experience during puberty. As they learn what it means to discern God s plan for them they will begin to recognise that they are strengthened by the Holy Spirit and the sacramental life of the Church in their decision making. Through reading and reflecting on the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5: 1-12) the pupils will begin to recognise that, in the Beatitudes, Jesus offers them a guide for Christian living, growth and fulfilment. They will reflect on the Sacrament of Matrimony and the commitment which a husband and wife make to one another in the sacrament. As they develop their understanding of the Sacrament of Matrimony the pupils will learn that sexual intercourse, in the context of marriage, is a sign of God s love which can lead to new life. In learning about the development of the child in the womb they will consider God s precious gift of life from conception to natural death and the need to cherish and respect it. By reflecting on Jesus Temptations in the desert (Luke 4: 1-13) the pupils will learn that, through prayer and the sacraments, God has given them the ability to resist temptation.
