Saint Peter Parish Cambridge, MASSACHUSETTS October, 2018 Let me begin, on behalf of the staff, by thanking all those who participated in any of our three Listening Sessions and thanks also to those who have spoken individually to one of the staff. We appreciate your thoughts and concerns. A summary of what we have heard could be grouped into two categories: Local and Wider Church. Local: We appreciate the expressions that people have trust in our leadership and did not feel that there was anything unsafe about Saint Peter Parish or School. We heard further expressions that the situation was dealt with appropriately and honestly in homily reflections. What we did learn is that we have not done enough to inform people of all that is done yearly to ensure this safety for God s people especially the children. (While people felt safe they could not name the reasons for that safety.) Truthfully, the Archdiocese of Boston, and its parishes have made great strides in the protection of children since 2002. We will do better in communicating the steps that are taken each year in this process. For now, please know that every staff member, teacher, administrator, volunteer, deacon and priest all undergo yearly checks and training. Wider Church: Not surprisingly themes that resonated over and over again included: the need for women to be welcomed into positions of real authority and power in the church; the need for absolutely transparent action in acknowledging and dealing with those who have abused their authority; the need for bishops to be held accountable for actions and cover-ups of abusive behavior; the need to re-look at mandatory celibacy for priests and the possibility of a married priesthood, and the possibility of ordination being made available to women as well as men. Questions also were raised about who is being admitted to seminaries and how are they being trained; and also a concern of a clericalism that pictures priests as being above the People of God. Generally too, there was a feeling that the laity are the solution to the problem and that they need to be more involved in church authority and decision making. As a staff, we see the value and importance of all these observations. The Second Vatican Council envisioned the church as the People of God not a pyramid image, but rather a 7

St. Peter Parish Cambridge, MA circle image where all of the gifts and abilities of God s people are recognized and used for the common good. What can we do? Again, a separation of Local and Wider Church may be helpful. Local: Immediately, we will be more attentive to communicating all of the steps that are in place here at St. Peter Parish and School to insure that we are doing our utmost to insure the protection and safety of all who come here to worship, pray and be educated. We will also stress that this is the responsibility of all parishioners. Please bring any concerns, observations and suggestions to the staff that we may deal with them in a timely and effective manner. Wider Church: The next meeting of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops takes place on November 11-14 and these matters will be at the top of the agenda. In addition, Pope Francis has called a worldwide synod of bishops in Rome, February 21-24, 2019, specifically to discuss sexual abuse. These forums will have far-reaching significance for the future of our church, both here in the U.S. and worldwide. We feel that it is important to make your thoughts known to our leadership. This is an opportunity for action and inclusion. Letters of concern to Cardinal Sean will give him a clearer picture of what people are thinking, and hopefully these thoughts will be brought to those larger gatherings. His address is: Cardinal Sean P. O Malley, OFM Cap 66 Brooks Drive Braintree, MA 02184 Of course, we understand that people want so much more to happen. We do also. This is at least a first step we can take as the story continues to unfold. Speaking our concerns comes from a place of love of God, and the desire for our church to be a true sign of God s Kingdom. Once again, Thank you for your expressions of concern and for your support of Saint Peter Parish and School. Together, we will journey ahead. For the Entire Staff, Fr. Lenny Fr. Lenny 8
