For children, it s a time of going back to school, but even here at Highlands it s a time for going back to church. And here at Highlands we are kicking off going back to church this Fall in a big way. September 10 th we will be hosting an end of summer picnic after church, along with our Plug In Event. What is Plug In? You might be thinking. This event is a time to come and learn about all of the many exciting ministries here at Highlands and find a place to get connected depending on your various spiritual gifts and passions. If you re thinking I have no idea what my spiritual gifts are, that s no problem at all; we have a table for you as well. Come take a spiritual gifts assessment and based on what you learn, make your way over to some of the various ministries that need you and your particular spiritual gift. I really hope that you come to this event and get plugged into at least one of the many ministries here at Highlands. And the reason I hope this is because I know that we are a better body when we have everyone using their God given gifts. Just like the old war posters of Uncle Sam saying, I need you! We here at Highlands need you as well. You have a part to play in the body of Christ. So come get connected and see where God might be leading you next. Not only is September a great time for you to get plugged in to a new ministry, September is also a great time to invite friends to church. No one likes jumping into something in the middle of the school year. But as kids are heading back to school, parents might be interested in a new church or a new Sunday School class for their children. But going back to church is not only for people with kids. We also have one adult Sunday School Class, 3 adult Bible Studies, and one young adult Bible Study. All of these Bible Studies meet weekly and will be starting new studies the week of September 10 th. Our youth group also meets weekly, with a monthly Bible Study as well. These are all great opportunities to invite a friend to come be a part of the body of Christ. Or, if you yourself aren t already in a Bible Study, this is a great time to join a Bible Study yourself. So come and join us this Fall and invite a friend to come join us as well. The Lord is up to something here at Highlands and I want as many people to be a part of it as possible. Who knows how the Lord might want to transform you for the transformation of the world. Remember, we need all of you! Blessings, Pastor Katie Save the Date November 3rd & 4th We will begin taking donations in October.

Yes, grief is an emotional response to the loss of a loved one. That is how most people think of grief. However the true definition is much bigger and broader. It is the loss of a pet, it is a divorce, it is the loss of your job, it is the loss of your physical abilities, it is the loss of trust and so much more. Our society teaches us how to make friends and how to love our families. It teaches us how to acquire the things we want in life, however it teaches us very little on how to react to the loss of these things. The truth is that much of what we are taught about grief is misinformation. We have a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist in our church who is willing to teach the Grief Recovery Method of handling loss in our lives. It is a doable, repeatable process that you can use now and in the future. As a part of our ministry here at Highlands, we are offering this world renowned program for only $50.00 which includes the eight classes and the book needed for the program. We will be hosting the Organizational Meeting on September 19th at 7pm in the Highlands Fellowship Hall. Our instructor will be available to explain the program, the rules, and answer any questions about the program. If you have any questions, please contact Lori Ann Prange at 904-742-1560. If there is no answer, please leave a message and you will receive a return call. Think of yourself or those you know who are hurting and let them know about this excellent opportunity to change their outlook on life, loss, and the future to come!! Please pass along this information to anyone who might benefit from the experience. PLUG IN AND GET CONNECTED TO HIGHLANDS October 1 st Right after Church There are so many really great things going on at Highlands right now and we are going to celebrate all the outstanding work being done in worship and missions here at Highlands. To celebrate we will be hosting an end of the summer picnic. We will provide the hot dogs, hamburgers and watermelon and you ll bring your favorite sides to share!! We ll have some fun activities and a chance to win a great prize!! This should be a fun day filled with good food, fellowship, and a love of the Lord. You won t want to miss it!! DO YOU LIKE TO COLOR? 9:00a.m. - 1:00p.m. Monday - Thursday 10421 Biscayne Blvd. Jacksonville, Florida 32218 If you like to color, the Prison Letter Writing Ministry needs your help!! We are coloring the Christmas Cards which will go to the prisoners so that they can write their families and friends at Christmas time. If you d like to color some of these cards, please see Lori Ann Prange for some cards. We need over 200 cards, so everyone s help is needed and appreciated!!

Highlands Monthly News HIGHLANDS SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP I have met with Mr. Jeff Collins, principal of Highlands Elementary School and we have renewed our School Church Partnership with Highlands Elementary School. Mr. Collins expressed his appreciation for the school supplies and for the yard improvement recently provided by Highlands UMC members. NORTHSIDE CHRISTIAN SERVICE CENTER During our meeting, Mr. Collings talked about some ways we could help the teachers. A few are: Two teachers need help with setting up and organizing books for a classroom library Some teachers would like to have someone read to a child or children Some teachers would like to have someone to listen to a child read The Media Specialist is at Highlands every other week and may like some assistance Other ways to be involved: Join the School Advisory Council (meets the third Thursday at 7:50 AM) Host a faculty meeting one afternoon from 3:15-4:30 Help teachers prepare materials for centers and classroom activities Additional information: Mr. Kitchings leads a boys leadership club called Highlands Gents which helps guide the boys in positive directions. Previously, the boys have had a checkers tournament. We are welcome to continue to pass our flyers for our free meals and other public events. Mr. Collins is available to speak to our congregation Highlands Elementary School has a Facebook page where we can see the results of our partnership. (If you view the website, be sure to post a like) Mission Monday Fall Boutique October 6 th 8 th WE NEED YOUR HELP!! As we prepare for the Fall Boutique, we need those things you have stuck in drawers or in the closet for which you really have no use. Think cute gifty type items which you might give as a holiday or hostess gift. (Maybe it s something cute you got and never used or didn t really care for.) New or gently used decorative items, gifts, jewelry, stationary, new kitchen towels. Please note that if your donated item doesn t sell at the Boutique and you want it returned please let us know, otherwise it will be held for the garage sale in November. Please bring all your items for the Boutique to the Parlor. (Do not put them on the stage, as the stage is for the Garage Sale items.) The Mission Monday Ministries will take these things and turn them into resources to support their ministries, which include clothing & needed items for our sister church in Cuba; the Prison Letter Writing Ministries; Quilts and afghans for the veterans in the VA Hospital; and the Sewing Ministry. Your support means the difference in a little girl in Cuba getting a new dress, a prisoner getting Christmas cards to write their family, a veteran getting a warm quilt to cover his legs in his wheelchair or a woman learning to sew for the first time!!
