Their role is to bring God s glory to humanity as seen in their interaction with humanity in Sacred Scripture. St. Michael protects God s people from the evil one s grasp. St. Gabriel brought God s message of salvation through appearing to Zachariah and Mary. St. Raphael is believed to be the angel who was the bearer of God s healing in many Old Testament stories. These three along with the whole hosts of angels serve to aid and protect the Kingdom of God on earth. We as the body of Christ and members of the Kingdom are thankful for their assistance. In like kind, there are a great many people who give of their time, talent and treasure to help ensure a successful picnic. On behalf of the parish of St. Philip the Apostle, I want to thank all of you who have contributed to the parish picnic this year. Many of you, especially the coordinators, have given hours of your time leading up to today, and the picnic would not happen without your efforts. I would like offer my extreme gratitude to Terry Priesmeyer for chairing the whole picnic again this year along with the other coordinators: Allan Janak, Anthony Collins, Preston Dornak, Carol Tomlinson, Wendy Korenek, Larry Staff, Sandra Knesek, Brenda Harp, Dustin Kana, Clyde Reynolds, Linda Wiesner, Jimmie & Ceci Triska, Chris & Tami Triska, Danny Marek, Tisha Zalman, Kathy Helterbridle, Rose Marie Janak, Michael Bolcik, Randy & Becky Mitchell, Stan Labay, LeeRoy Staff, Ruthie Buzek, Katie Kainer, Dr. Ross Anderson, Coby Rod, Leonard & Dana Sternadel, Mitchell Whitley, A.J. & Molly Kresta, Timmy Drapela, A. 3. NEXT SUNDAY S READINGS OCTOBER 7, 2018 FIRST READING - Genesis 2:18-24 The LORD God said: "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him." So the LORD God formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them; whatever the man called each of them would be its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of the air, and all wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man. So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man. When he brought her to the man, the man said: "This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called 'woman, ' for out of 'her man' this one has been taken." That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one flesh. SECOND READING - Hebrews 2:9-11 Brothers and sisters: He "for a little while" was made "lower than the angels, " that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting that he, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering. He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated Key Scriptural Passage: Listen! The wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. (James 5:4) Questions for Discussion: Adult: What are the three most important values motivating your daily decisions? Child: Could a poor person who is wise be richer in a way than a foolish person who has many things? Why? Readings For The Week Monday...Is 66:10-14c/Mt 18:1-4 Tuesday...Ex 23:20-23/Mt 18:1-5,10 Wednesday..Jb 9:1-12,14-16/Lk 9:57-62 Thursday. Gal 6:14-18/Mt 11:25-30 Friday.. Jb 38:1,12-21,40:3-5/Lk 10:13-16 Saturday Jb 42:1-3,5-6,12-17/Lk 10:17-24 One Minute Meditation. Our Call When God calls, his children respond. The Father called a chosen people, prophets, and kings to service. They responded. Jesus called his apostles and disciples. They responded. God calls each of us. Have you responded? Are you where he wants you to be? all have one origin. Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them brothers. GOSPEL - Mark 10:2-16 The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked, "Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?" They were testing him. He said to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?" They replied, "Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her." But Jesus told them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate." In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this. He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery." And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it." Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on them. Pro-Life Corner...Wake up America! Toleration of abortion is compromise; ignorance of abortion is complicity; inaction regarding abortion is approval. We must abolish abortions. Thursday, October 4 is the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi. You may bring your pet or pets to be blessed at 2:45 p.m. on the front lawn of St. Philip School. Pastoral Institute - Extended Program Introduction to the Bible and the Pentateuch is a sixweek course for all adult Catholics. In this course, participants will learn how the Bible came to be; the difference between Catholic and Protestant Bibles, and the first five books of the Bible will be reviewed to better understand God s message to us in these books. $30.00 per course. Tuesday mornings Date: October 9-November 13, 2018 Time: 9:15-11:30 a.m. - Location: Chancery, Victoria Thursday evenings Date: October 11-November 15, 2018 (no class Nov. 1, rescheduled for Nov 5) Time: 7:00-9:15 a.m.- Location: Chancery, Victoria Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul; The decree of the Lord is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. - Psalm 19:8

Next Sunday, October 7 is Respect Life Sunday: Respect Life Sunday is an opportunity for us to do what we are called to do each day: Pray for and speak out for life. We are encouraged to pray daily for an end to abortion and to pray for the right of ALL to be born. More than 4,000 abortions are performed in the United States every day. Such a callous view of life has given rise to such horrific practices as euthanasia, physician-assisted suicide, cloning, embryonic stem cell research and other practices which defy the God-given moral order of life. Let us pray and be actively involved in writing our elected officials and asking them to oppose any legislation which destroys life. Sunday, Oct. 7 is National Life Chain Sunday. A time to publicly witness your belief in the sacredness of life from conception to natural death. Come to Evans Park Pavilion at 1:45 p.m. to select a sign and pray before going out on the street from 2-3 p.m. Mass Remembrance...If you wish to remember your loved ones at the celebrations of Eucharist on All Souls Day, please take an envelope, found at the entrances of the church. Fill it out and drop it into the collection basket. This is not for Mass intentions, but for remembrances in the prayers of the faithful at the Mass of All Souls. These envelopes will be available beginning next Sunday. Remembrance Book of the Deceased Beginning Sunday, October 7 and continuing through the month of October, the Book of the Deceased will be in the front foyer of the Church. Please write down the names of your loved ones you would like to have remembered during the month of November. If you have already written their names in previous years, please do not write it again. Those names are in the book already. Thank you to the following parishioners for their donation toward the cost of the meat for our picnic: M/M Glen Korenek, Lorraine Cranek, Helen Bender, M/M Michael Bolcik, M/M Joe Freeman, M/M Calvin Pfeil, Janet Harvey, M/M Ron Price, Susan Radley and M/M Ray Jaksch. 31 st Annual Catholic Conference Missionary Disciples: Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ... Save the Date: Saturday, October 20, 2018 at the Cathedral Center (next to The Cathedral of Our Lady of Victory) in Victoria. All adult Catholics are invited to attend this annual diocesan conference. Click here to register: https:// www.victoriadiocese.org/xxix-annual-conference-ofcatechesis-ministry SAINT PHILIP THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH 4. From Scripture...Growing in Faith Mark 9:38-48 Be ruthless with sin... The disciples were jealous of an unfamiliar man who healed in Jesus name. It seemed that they were more concerned about losing the spotlight than in healing. Yet, we do the same thing when we refuse to participate in good works because the people are unfamiliar, those in charge don t do things the way we d like, or we fear our efforts won t get recognized. Competiveness and ego have no place in the Christian community. Jesus was very clear; we must be ruthless in removing sin from our lives. Giving up a relationship, job, or habit that keeps us from God may seem just as painful as cutting off a hand, but the consequences of our choices last forever. Being lukewarm toward Jesus is not possible. For whoever is not against us is for us. Not all of Jesus followers resemble each other or belong to the same groups. But all who are on Jesus side have the same goal to build up the kingdom of God. Our differences should never interfere with the work of the kingdom. News from the Cemetery Committee of Holy Cross Memorial Park Cemetery Please remember that only one flower arrangement and only one perpetual or solar light is permitted per grave space. No other items such as statuary, teddy bears, toys, memorabilia, etc., are permitted on or near the grave spaces. All graves will be cleaned and anything in violation will not be saved. Please do not add any new flowers until after October 15, in order that we may prepare the cemetery for All Souls Day. Thank you for your cooperation in assisting with the upkeep of the cemetery. Let us work together with Kirk to maintain the beauty of our cemetery. Area Church Picnics Oct. 7 - Taiton Community Center fall festival. Turkey and dressing dinner at 11:00 a.m. $10.00 per plate.
