The People Who Worship

GOAL That we might understand our role in Worship on Sunday morning.

OUTCOMES 1. See that we need God s gift of faith in order to truly worship Him.

OUTCOMES 1. See that we need God s gift of faith in order to truly worship Him. 2. Recognize that worship must conform to the truth of God s Word

OUTCOMES 1. See that we need God s gift of faith in order to truly worship Him. 2. Recognize that worship must conform to the truth of God s Word 3. Apply our faith in worship and in every aspect of our lives.

CATECHISM What is confession? Confession has two parts. First, that we confess our sins, and second, that we receive absolution, that is, forgiveness, from the pastor as from God Himself, not doubting, but firmly believing that by it our sins are forgiven before God in heaven.

God wishes us to believe Him and to receive from Him blessings, and this He declares to be true divine service. Philip Melanchthon, Apology of the Augsburg Confession III:107

Question Driving home from worship one Sunday morning, Hulda pondered Pastor s sermon. She drew a connection between the Gospel reading and their community in a way she had not considered before. Intrigued, she asked her family what they thought of the message. Her question was met with an awkward silence. When she pressed further, it seemed that no one else had listened to the sermon. Come on, Mom, her son complained, isn t it enough that we went to church?

Question How would you respond to the son s question? Come on, Mom, her son complained, isn t it enough that we went to church?

Question Are you ever tempted to think of worship as something to attend and watch, but not really participate in? Why does this happen?

In Spirit and Truth In John 4, Jesus talks with a Samaritan woman who had led a sad and sinful life. When His questions get too personal, she tries to distract Him with a question on worship.

John 4:19 26 19 "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."

John 4:19 26 21 Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."

John 4:19 26 25 The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us."

John 4:19 26 26 Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am he."

In Spirit and Truth When Jesus questions get too personal, the woman at the well tries to distract Him with a question on worship.

In Spirit and Truth How does Jesus respond?

In Spirit and Truth 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."

In Spirit and Truth What do you think it means to worship in spirit?

In Spirit and Truth Many of our worship services begin with Confession and Absolution.

1 John 1:8 9 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Psalm 32:5 5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD "and you forgave the guilt of my sin.

In Spirit and Truth Why are Confession and Absolution important preparation for worship?

In Spirit and Truth In John 4:23 24, Jesus told the woman that true worshipers worship in spirit. What else did He teach her?

In Spirit and Truth What does it mean to worship in truth? Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. John 17:17

In Spirit and Truth Sometimes, Christians speak as if this emphasis on spirit and truth is unique to the New Testament. Read Hosea 6:6. How does this passage reflect this same teaching? For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.

In Spirit and Truth Hosea calls us to a living faith. Romans 12:1. Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God this is your spiritual act of worship.

By Faith Alone Seeing this biblical teaching on worship, is it ever proper for us to consider worship simply as going through the motions, or mindlessly repeating words or actions?

By Faith Alone What can we do to avoid these problems?

By Faith Alone Every religion in the world has some form of worship. Most of the members of these religions seem sincere and many seem to live good lives. Without faith in Christ, are they engaged in true worship?

By Faith Alone God reveals Himself to us and calls us to worship Him. How should we relate to those who do not acknowledge Him or worship Him?

By Faith Alone 1 Peter 3:15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
