IMCA Masjid Al-Fajr Your guide to Janazah preparation Prepared by Ahmed Alamine The Imam and the Director of Religious Programs of Indianapolis Muslim Community Association Version 1 (November 2017) All copyrights are reserved to the author.

Introduction: Death is an inevitable fact as Allah says: Every soul will taste death Quran 2:185. Therefore, we should always be prepared for it. Part of preparing for death is educating ourselves on how to prepare Janazah while preserving the dignity of the deceased person and applying the sunnah of our Prophet PBUH. Because it is an unprecedented experience for many, it is important to have a clear and accurate understanding of performing janazah of a deceased muslim. To this end, this Janazah preparation handbook is introduced as a comprehensive guide with clear steps on how to handle Janazah from the moment the person is dying to the burial. Although the general principles of janazah are similar across the fiqh doctrine, there may be some minor differences. All opinions from different fiqh doctrines have been evaluated and considered. And the most authentic and balanced doctrine has been chosen for this guide.. Preparing for death: Every Muslim should be prepared for death while they are healthy. This is done by writing a will wasiyya that outlines their financial obligations and rights, their wealth and how to distribute it. The Muslim has right to distribute ⅓ of their wealth after their death to entities, charitable activities, and to people who do not religiously inherit him/her. Finally, the will should decide the next of kin who will handle their body after death and what type of Janaza they would prefer and the location of their burial. What to do when someone is on the verge of passing: If you are present while a person who on the verge of dying: 1) Remind them to repent to Allah and ask for forgiveness if they are conscious. 2) Remind them Shahada statement: without forcing them to pronounce it, just repeat several times close to their ear. Once they say it, refrain from repeating. If they say something else, then gently repeat it again until it is their last statement. 3) If the process take longer, one my read Surat Yasseen in the room.

Immediately after death: 1) Close their eyes and mouth. 2) Soften and straighten the body parts: hands, legs, and neck. 3) Cover the entire body. 4) Raising the voice and crying loudly is absolutely forbidden around the body. Tearing is permissible. 5) Expedite the Janazah process. 6) Execute the will of the deceased person unless there is a forbidden article in it. Washing the body 1. Qualified people to wash the body The body should be washed by the following people in the order below: 1.1. The person who the deceased chose verbally or designated to wash him/her in their will. 1.2. The relatives of the deceased; the priority is for the closest one to the deceased person: father, grandfather, son, uncle for men. Mother, grandmother, daughter, and aunt, for women. N.B: men should be washed by men relatives, and women washed by women relatives. The husband may wash his wife and vice versa. 1.3. A trustworthy person (volunteer or paid) may wash the body. The family of deceased may choose the person. 1.4. In case there is no one from the same gender to wash the body, the opposite gender should perform Tayammum on the body instead of washing it. N.B. The washer is forbidden from exposing anything negative about the body. But if they observe a positive thing, they should disclose it to the relatives of deceased.

2. The process of washing the body: 2.1. Items needed to wash the body: Bed, Running water, Gloves, Towels (small and large), cotton, Sidr/Soap, camphor/oil-based cologne. 2.2. It s preferred to wear gloves before touching the body. 2.5. Cover the private parts Awarah (from the bellybutton to the knees, for both man and woman). 2.6. Remove the clothes. 2.7. Set the body, and gently press the belly to discharge any feces/urine that is in the pathway to come out. 2.8. Cover your hands with a thick towel to wash the private part. It is forbidden to touch the private part of a body with a naked hand. 2.9. It is recommended to perform complete Wudu a on the body. Do not put water in the mouth or nose. Instead, wipe the lips, and teeth if possible, and nose with a wet finger or towel. 2.10. Wash the entire body for: 3, 5, or 7 times as needed, perform the following each time: 2.10.1. Repeat step (2.6) 2.10.2. Wash the hair and beard with foam of sidr or soap 2.10.3. Wash the right side first (front and back), the then wash the left side (front and back) each time. 2.10.4. Use sidr, preferably, or soap if necessary at least once. 2.10.5. Use water mixed with camphor for the last wash. Other deodorants may be used as substitute. 2.11. If anything is discharged from the private part after completing the wash but before wrapping the body in the kafan (Shroud), remove the dirt, clean

the private part, close with a cotton, if necessary, and perform the wudua again, and no need for another wash. 2.12. Women with long hair, her hair should be braided to 3 braids for sake of simplicity 3. Handling the body in unusual conditions: 3.1. If the body is decomposed or burnt, and washing it could further deteriorate it, then Tayammum should be performed. 3.2. After autopsy: During this process, many parts of the body could be opened, and may be left opened when it comes to the funeral home. The body should be put together before washing it. 3.3. Non Muslim handling Muslim body: The assistance of non Muslim could be used to handle the body during the washing if a muslim is not available to perform that task. It has to be under the supervision of a muslim, however. 3.4. It is absolutely forbidden for the body to be naked.

Place the body on top of the shrouds, and wrap each layer around the body, one after another. Once all shrouds are wrapped around the body, fasten the 3 ropes. Newborns and children The newborn and child below 7 years are washed and their shroud is prepared the same was, except that they could be washed by the opposite gender. The Janazah prayer N.B. Three times in a day Muslims should not pray janazah or bury: When the sun is rising until it raises, noon, and when the sun is sitting until it sits. 1. Place the body in front of the Imam. 2.
