All women in the area are invited to join and share the fellowship with each other. Fruit, coffee cakes, various salads and sandwiches will be served following Gerri Smith s performance. There is no charge for the brunch, but a free will donation will be collected. Our featured speaker will be Gerri Smith. Gerri is no stranger to our church as she has done her Annual June Brunch Monday, June 2nd @ 10:30AM portrayals of Mrs. Peter, Esther, Mrs. Job, Mrs. Noah, Fannie Crosby, Ruth, and Rahab the last nine years and she is becoming a tradition at the Church of Hope June Brunch. This year she will portray Jochebed. Gerri began her ministry by doing Chalk Art but allergies forced her to find another avenue to share the message with others, so she became a storyteller after a congregation requested she do Jochebed. Later she was asked to do Katie Luther and the rest is May & June 2014 history as word of mouth advertising expanded her ministry into many other characters. Gerri and her husband Philip travel around the country in their RV as she shares her faith in her ministry. Please come and join us. Reservations are requested; please call Ann at the church office (237-8312) or Marge Mahler (584-2894). Summer Evening Bible Study Returns! Starting Thursday, evening June 5th a 6:30PM we will begin a new bible study called Making Sense of the Bible. In Making Sense of the Bible, Adam Hamilton invites us into an honest conversation about the Bible. It begins with foundational questions such as, How and when was the Bible written? Who decided which books made it into the scriptures and why? How literally must we read it? And, Is the Bible ever wrong? From there, Hamilton considers the real questions people frequently ask that continue to divide Christians and denominations alike, including: Were Adam and Eve real people? Why is God so violent in the Old Testament? Why would Paul command women to "keep silent in the church"? Is Jesus the only way to salvation? How does God view homosexual people? Is the Book of Revelation a guide to the End Times? In approachable and inviting language, Hamilton addresses these often misunderstood biblical themes leading readers to a deeper appreciation of the Bible so that we might hear God speak through it and find its words to be lifechanging and life-giving.

PAGE 3 From the Pastor s Desk Well, after sitting at my desk stressing over what to write about, I have come across a prayer that was written by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Dietrich was a well-known theologian of the 20 th Century who was imprisoned and executed for participating in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. He was a man who stuck with his faith and suffered in the name of the Lord, but he shows us a strength that can only be found through faith in God. So here it is: God, I Call to You God, I call to you in the early morning; help me pray and gather my thoughts; I cannot do it alone. In me it is dark, but with you there is light. I am lonely, but you do not leave me. I am faint-hearted, but with you there is help. I am restless, but with you there is peace. In me there is bitterness, but with you there is patience. I do not understand your ways, but you know the right way for me. Father in heaven, Praise and thanks be to you for the rest of the night. Praise and thanks be to you for the new day. Praise and thanks be to you for all your love and faithfulness in my past life. You have shown me many good things, Let me now also accept hard things from your hand. You will not place on me more than I can bear. You make all things serve your children for the best. I hope that you all will use this prayer each and every day as you start on your daily journey. God has a plan for all of us, so please keep your eyes and hearts open to all that the Lord will be offering to you. Hope to see you in church! Blessings, Pastor Jan (Taken from I Want to Live These Days With You; A Year of Daily Devotion by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Westminster John Knox Press, Louisville, 2005. p. 62)
