PARISH NEWS PANCAKE BREAKFAST The Respect Life Ministry is sponsoring a Pancake Breakfast this week-end, Sunday, January 19, after all morning Masses. The feature is Mark Matera s famous pancake recipe. The cost is - a monetary donation. All donations from the pancake breakfast will be given to Women s Choice Network to be used toward the purchase of an Ultrasound machine. In addition we request that parishioners bring a baby item (diapers, wipes, bibs, receiving blanket, etc.) The baby items will be donated to Catholic Charities - they are always in need of donations for babies. The pancake breakfast is being held in honor of the 2014 March for Life, on Wednesday 1/22/2014. ORDINARY TIME The Church begins a new season today (Jan. 13) after evening prayer! At sundown we move into Ordinary Time and carry the message of Christmas with us as we follow Jesus through the Gospel story according to Matthew. Ordinary time is important and does not mean plain or uneventful. Ordinary comes from the word - ordinal and means counted so from now until Ash Wednesday (March 5) we number our weeks and thus title our Sundays. Take note of your Catholic Calendar (available in the lobby) and share this ordinary time by following the solemnities, feasts and memorials of the Lord and the saints with the whole church. Souper Bowl Sunday 2/2/14 We are going to change our normal Souper Bowl Sunday soup and cracker drive to the most needed item at this time for North Hills Community Outreach which is paper products. Paper products includes toilet paper, Kleenex, paper towels and napkins. Please participate in this important drive! Any questions, call Renee Full 724-934-3855. PROTECTING GOD S CHILDREN The session that was to be held on Jan. 8 has been rescheduled for: ST. JOHN NEUMANN WED. JAN 22 @ 7:00 PM (NEW DATE) St. James, Sewickley Saturday, Jan 25 @ 9:00 AM Questions? or to register, please call 412-366-5885 to speak to Jeanette Pappert at x15. If you plan to volunteer for any SJN SECOND COLLECTION DePaul School & St. Anthony School Programs The annual diocesan collection THIS week-end, Jan. 18 & 19 helps to further the goals of providing quality education programs and services for students with special needs. They provide support to 10 schools within the diocese and two college sites at Duquesne & Pitt. Also, your kind donation counts toward our Parish Share Assessment. Thank you for your continued support of their mission. WINTER BLOOD DRIVE Central Blood Bank will be here on Sunday morning, February 16 th for our Winter Blood Drive. Please mark your calendars and consider donating a unit of blood to help those in need. It is not that hard to do and is greatly appreciated. Appointments can be scheduled through Andrew James at 412-366-5885 x11 or ajames@stjohnneumannpgh.org. ABITIBI PAPER RECYCLING TO END AT SJN Due to the sporadic pick-up schedule by the recycling company and the mess created on our own and neighboring property when high winds scatter the waste paper, the recycling bins on the edge of our parking lot will be removed. We thank everyone who contributed to this on-going fundraising effort HEARING THE WORD A PROBLEM? Are you having difficulty hearing in church? Do you wear a hearing aid? Over the holidays St. John Neumann Church was wired with a Loop System that can greatly aid those with hearing aids. On most hearing aids there is a switch for T or M settings. If you set your hearing aid to T you will hear directly from the audio system in church. Faith comes from what is heard. Romans 10 A wire was added around the church to transmit an electromagnetic signal that is picked up by a receiver with a "T" coil. Hearing aid or cochlear implant users with "T" coils can simply switch to the "T" setting and adjust the volume of the hearing aid, if necessary. If your hearing aid doesn't have a telecoil, or if you don't wear an aid, you can still use an IL system by wearing a headset or earpiece with a "T" coil in it (these are available on request in the sacristy). It transmits directly to hearing aids or cochlear implants equipped with "T" coils, no receiver required. It is unobtrusive with "T" coil hearing aids or cochlear implants. We have more information & will have someone speak about it in church on one of the up coming Sundays. SCRIPTURE STUDY Keep your New Year s resolution to grow closer to the Lord by coming to Adult Scripture Study on Thursday morning from 9:45 till 11:30 am. These are approximate times - come late/leave early - just come! The door is open and the coffee is on - all we need is YOU! Join us to read and reflect on the Sunday Scriptures.

EDUCATION FAMILY MASSES BEGAN JANUARY 15 Have you ever been to a Family Mass? These Masses are scheduled during a break from our regular Good Shepherd sessions to help the children connect what they are learning in the atrium to what happens when we gather as a community for the Holy Mass. Children bring with them their knowledge of church seasons and colors, prayer and gestures, parables and prophecy. Parents model full participation in liturgy through active listening, spoken prayer and song. We even train children who are usually considered too young to be altar servers and lectors, while the youngest children help bring up the gifts. All children from preschool through 6 th grade are invited to sit at the foot of the altar for Father Al s homily. We invite our Parish Family to join our Good Shepherd Families at these special Masses. Family Masses will take place at both 4:30 and 6:30 pm on these Wednesdays: January 22, 29 and February 5, 2014. Where else do you have the opportunity on a week night to join in worship with a church full of spirited adults and children? Let us come together in praise and thanksgiving for the great gift of God-with-us in Word and Eucharist. SACRAMENTS RCIA On Sunday, Jan. 26, from 10:30 till Noon our candidates continue their journey to full reception into the Catholic Church. SJN parishioners are always welcome to stop in and meet Julie, Jan, Jeff and Callie. We all need the community to offer them support in hospitality and encouragement as they study the gift of sacraments in our Catholic tradition during this catechumenate period of Rite of Christian Initiation. MARRIAGE PREP There is much to do for a wedding and lots of advice to be had. To celebrate the sacrament takes some special planning too. You must meet with the priest at least 6 months prior to the date and attend a marriage prep program. At SJN our MARRIAGE PREP program is open to all couples in the diocese and will be held on Saturday, February 22. Several married couples from the parish and Fr. Al fill the day with information and witness stories of how important it is to keep God as the third person in your marriage covenant. The day fulfills the diocesan requirement for the sacrament so pass the date on to anyone who might be anticipating the celebration of Matrimony in the coming year. Please give yourself this gift of reflection and time before you begin this awesome vocation of love. Call the Rel Ed office (ext. 12) to register. SPIRITUAL LOWC LITURGY OF THE WORD FOR CHILDREN This ministry aims to help the young child understand and participate in the Scriptures at Mass. The children are dismissed after the opening prayer to listen to the Word of God at their level. It was a wonderful ministry for many at SJN. Someone asked on Sunday when we are going to do it again - well, that is up to you - ANY- ONE INTERESTED IN THIS MINISTRY? Call Barb Stokes for more info and we ll get started. CENTERING PRAYER...will meet Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 7 pm MAGNIFICAT Many people have developed a rich prayer life using the monthly resource - Magnificat. In addition there are prayers for the morning and evening and after communion.
