FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH PLANO, ILLINOIS The Anchor I hope that you will have an opportunity this month to enrich your understanding of Martin Luther. The Lutheran church offers a great perspective of the Christian faith. One that is encouraging and one where hope abounds. If you grew up in the Lutheran tradition great, if not it is also good to hear why the Lutheran tradition has become important for you. From Lori Black: Why am I a Lutheran? To me this is an essential question. I was raised in the Baptist faith. Church has always been a big part of my life and the life of my family. As a young person I attended church with my family on Sunday mornings as well as Sunday evenings. We participated in youth group once a week and often times there was an additional service during the week. I know some of you are thinking wow, that s a lot of time at church. This was not something my parents required or forced me to do. It was something I loved. I was at home in our church, my friends were there and I truly feel that God was building in me a solid foundation. So why did I become a Lutheran? Yes, I was blessed to have a firm foundation built on God. However, I never felt good enough to be baptized into the Baptist church. Being baptized, to me, was huge. As with many people when I moved out of my parents home I fell away from regular church attendance. My sister in law invited me to attend the Lutheran church she had become involved with. Not only did I enjoy this new church family, more importantly, I learned for the first time ever that I was saved by GRACE. GRACE alone! All this time I struggled with not being baptized in the faith, I worried about going to heaven. Shortly after joining the church I was baptized and I grew to understand fully the concept of being saved by GRACE. I became so comfortable with this new understanding that I married a man studying to be a Lutheran pastor. The rest is history. Page 4 Volume 30, Issue 9 Ruth Ann s Ramblings (contributed by Ruth Ann Hoehn) In October we will be celebrating the Reformation and the 500th Anniversary of Martin Luther posting his 95 Thesis on the church door. One of the things that Martin Luther believed was that the Bible should be available to be read by all. Because of this, he translated the Bible into German. William Tyndale, like Martin Luther, wished to translate the Bible into the common language that could be read by all. Although a number of partial and complete English translations had previously been made, Tyndale was the first to take advantage of the new technology of the printing press, which allowed for wide distribution. William Tyndale (1494-1536) was born around 1494 in the area "about the borders of Wales," according to his contemporary, John Foxe. He was a member of a noble family that included an uncle who was an English knight and baron and who answered directly to the king. The Tyndales were also known under the name Hychyns (Hitchins), and it was as William Hychyns that he was educated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford, where he earned a Degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1512. He was made Master of Arts in July 1515, three months after he had been ordained into the priesthood. In addition to English, French, Italian, Spanish and German, Tyndale was also fluent in the Biblical languages of Greek, Hebrew and Latin. Because of his opinions he became involved in a controversy with his fellow clergymen, and around 1522 he was summoned before the Chancellor of the Diocese of Worcester on a charge of heresy. Tyndale left for London in 1523 to seek permission to translate the Bible into English and to request other help from the Church. In particular he hoped for support from Bishop Cuthbert Tunstall, a well-known classicist. Bishop Tunstall of London denied Tyndale the permission required under the Constitutions of Oxford, to translate the Bible into English, and forced him into exile. Tyndale remained in London for some time, preaching and studying, and relying on the help of a cloth merchant, Humphrey Monmouth. He left England under a pseudonym and moved to Hamburg in 1524 with the work he had done so far on his translation of the New Testament, and in the following year completed his translation, with assistance from friar William Roy. In 1526 a full edition of the New Testament was produced by the printer Peter Schoeffer in Worms, a safe city for church reformers. More copies were soon being printed in Antwerp. The book was smuggled into England and Scotland, and was condemned in October 1526 by Bishop Tunstall, who issued warnings to booksellers and had copies burned in public. Following the publication of the New Testament, Cardinal Wolsey condemned Tyndale as a heretic and demanded his arrest. Tyndale went into hiding, possibly for a time in Hamburg, and carried on his work. He revised his New Testament and began translating the Old Testament and writing various treatises. In 1530, he wrote The Practyse of Prelates, which resulted in the king asking the emperor Charles V to have Tyndale seized and returned to England. Eventually, he was betrayed to the authorities and was kidnapped in Antwerp in 1535, and held in the castle of Vilvoorde near Brussels. He was tried on a charge of heresy in 1536 and condemned, despite Thomas Cromwell's intercession on his behalf. Tyndale was strangled and his body burned at the stake on September 6, 1536. Three copies of the first (1526) edition of Tyndale's New Testament survive. The only complete copy is part of the Bible Collection of Württembergische Landesbibliothek, Stuttgart. The men who translated the Revised Standard Version in the 1940s noted that Tyndale's translation inspired the great translations to follow, including the King James Version of 1611. Many of the great English versions since then have drawn inspiration from Tyndale, including the Revised Standard Version, the New American Standard Bible, and the English Standard Version. William Tyndale is commemorated by the ELCA as a translator and martyr on October 6th.

If you have not yet done so, PLEASE take a few minutes and complete the form with your preferred day/time for serving as a Worship Volunteer. Thank you to the many who have already stepped up, but many more are needed! OFFERINGS RECEIVED Taking Faith Home sheets provide great ideas and practices for including faith into your daily routine. The sheets are designed around simple task and conversations. Even if it is only 5 minutes of conversation, the daily or weekly practices can greatly enrich the daily life in your own setting. Taking Faith Home sheets are centered on the readings for the week. They will include prayers for mealtime and for the week. They also provide a blessing. The sending part of the service in worship is not the only place that a blessing can be used. Saying a blessing at bed time is a great opportunity for kids or anyone. The sheets also provide questions for conversation in the week, service ideas that can be done at home. As people leave their families and start families of their own, they get to choose for their own family the routines and structure of life. Taking Faith Home sheets provide examples of possible rituals and traditions that you could start within your own family and setting to enrich your experience in family. We pray that you will make use of this easy resource and that it will be a blessing within your household. Student Information Forms The Sunday School office recently sent home student information forms with each student. Parents should complete these and return them as soon as possible. If you did not receive a form, contact the Sunday School office. There was also a secret pal information sheet that was sent home (unless children completed them at Sunday School). This information will only be shared with the student s secret pal and will help the adult secret pals get to know their secret pals better. First Kids Faith Mail Kids, remember to check your mailbox each week for special Sunday School information, your Taking Faith Home leaflets and soon notes from your secret pal. Special thanks to Virgil Hyte for building our special mailbox! Let Kathy Benoit know if your student doesn t have a box. Secret Pals Will Be Assigned Soon Secret pals will be assigned in October and the adults will receive the name(s) of their secret pal(s) before Halloween. If an adult (or middle or high school student) is interested in signing up, the sheet is on the bulletin board at the back of the church or contact Kathy Benoit. Secret pals will anonymously support Sunday School students throughout the year and meet their "pal" at the Sunday School Awards Sunday in May. This does not (and should not) have to be an expensive venture. This year we will use our special mailbox to exchange notes, cards and tiny treats between the student and adult secret pals. Little notes, treats and surprises go a long way to make a Sunday School child smile!! We Are Truly Blessed Thank God for our dedicated Sunday School teachers, music coordinators and assistants. We are blessed with a great group, but still need help with our 3rd & 4th graders. If you can spare a week or two a month, please contact Kathy Benoit and we will work out a schedule to co-teach the class.
