Welcome to First Lutheran! We re glad you re here. FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH LORAIN, OHIO GLOBAL WORSHIP September 30, 2018 9:30am

2 A special welcome to guests and visitors! May our time together be a blessing to you. GATHERING Prelude Gabriel s Oboe (form the movie The Mission) Welcome Words in italics are spoken by the leader. Words in bold are spoken by all. Hymn # s are the large numbers in the main part of the hymnal, located under your seat. Gathering Dialogue Come, let us gather in the one unifying Spirit, the Spirit of God in the church throughout the world. There is one body and one Spirit one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. Come, let us gather in the one unifying Spirit. Let us gather in unity with our sisters and brothers throughout the world. Confession In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Merciful God, in baptism you have joined us to Christ in his death and resurrection, and you have united us with all who are baptized in Christ s name; but too often we fail to live as one people and to seek the unity of your church. Kyrie (Hymn #158)

This hymn comes from Zimbabwe. 3 In baptism you have called the church to witness to Christ in all realms of life; but too often we do not seek to discern your will and to carry out your mission in the world. Kyrie (Hymn #158) In baptism you have sent us to serve all for whom Christ died; but too often we have ignored the suffering of the oppressed and the needs of the poor. Kyrie (Hymn #158) God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. Processional Hymn Come, All You People (Hymn #819) Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Prayer of the Day The assembly is seated. WORD First Reading: Isaiah 2:2-4 OT page 550 2 In days to come the mountain of the LORD s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it. 3 Many peoples shall come and say,

4 Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths. For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 4 He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God This hymn comes from Argentina. Psalm This hymn is a paraphrase of Psalm 133. Behold, How Pleasant (Hymn #649) Refrains: Sing once in Spanish; repeat in English Verses: Sung by the choir Second Reading: Ephesians 4:1-6 NT page 951 I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God Children s Sermon

5 Gospel Acclamation The assembly stands to welcome the gospel. Gospel: John 17:15-23 NT page 880 The holy gospel according to John, the 17 th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. [Jesus prayed:] I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth. 20 I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. The assembly is seated. Sermon Silence for reflection follows the sermon.
