Mark Dusenberry s Wright Flyer accessory trailer was recently decorated with a new vinyl sign on both sides depicting the Model 5 type of plane the Wright brothers built and flew. Mark duplicated this particular plane and also piloted it many times and in several places including the field from which the Wright brothers also piloted their original. Terry Henry created the graphics and had it professionally made. He also helped our hangar chairman, Chris Reynolds, to put it on one side of the trailer.
Speaking of Challenges: Our long time member, Mark Dusenberry, has made a name for himself as an expert in the field of vintage Wright brother s aircraft, and has probably accomplished more successful flights in this particular model 1905 of the Wright Flyers than any other pilot except the Wrights themselves. However, a few years ago, he had the misfortune of crashing his one and only replica at a field here in Ohio where the Wright brothers had once used themselves. He suffered some very serious injuries at the time, which has slowed his creativity down a bit; but nevertheless, has not stopped him from continuing his research or the rebuilding of his beloved Wright Flyer. Occasionally, he needs a little help, and our EAA Chapter 1077 members are eager to lend assistance because they understand the uniqueness and importance of the work that Mark is doing. The following gallery of photos taken by Terry Henry picture him and some of the chapter members assisting one cold Saturday morning when he needed help turning over the wings of his reconstruction project airplane. He does this work in his own garage he had built for that very purpose. In the background is Mary Jo Fait, who is one of our most helpful members who performs many useful jobs in our organization including cleaning and maintaining our office and restroom facilities.
Glenn Davis was there to help one day. On another day, Leon Lamp, John Haines, Dave Johnson, Allen Welsh, and John Hurless helped. The secretary read the minutes of the previous meeting. A. Motion to accept the secretary s report was made by Brad Buss. Second was made by Sam Wise. Motion carried III. The treasurer report was given by Frank Price. A. Motion to accept the Treasurer s report was made by Sam Wise with a second by Randy Maley. Motion carried. B. Motion to pay the bills submitted for payment was made by Sam Wise with a second by Chris Reynolds. IV. Old Business A. Dave Johnson reported that he had made arrangement to bring an example of the Chapter Logo to be submitted to an embroidery firm to make a patch. However, he inadvertently left the example on his table at home. He or another member will bring one to the next meeting. B. A discussion was held about activities for 2017. Dave Johnson requested any ideas for flyout destinations be submitted to the group. Perhaps a clipboard can be placed somewhere in the meeting room for members to jot down ideas for these destinations. Some ideas were presented and discussed. One of which was to hold a chapter picnic at our hangar where it is more convenient to hold bomb drop or spot landing contests. It was suggested that we can make a day of it by including a poker run or some other flyout activity. Frank Price brought up the idea of a catered chicken dinner as a fundraising activity but members were quick to suggest that we not do all the work. Glenn Davis suggested a Chili Fly-in as a option that might be pulled off during cooler weather. It was even suggested that we use photos of member aircraft to create a calendar that could be sold for a fundraiser. C. Two of the Scholarship committee members met recently to start the process of writing grants to fund our educational activities. Glenn Davis pointed out that a yearly budget for the past couple of years needs to be generated which shows expenditures as well as income from previous events. It was pointed out that our charter with the city precludes us from offering any activity that might compete with the FBO. V. New Business VI. A. Dave Johnson offered Kudos to our newsletter editor, John Hurless, for his article about John Glenn in our February newsletter. Keep up the good work. B. We received three items of correspondence over the last month. Frank Price read a letter from the Salvation Army thanking us for delivering the left over food from the Christmas party. Glenn Davis read a thank you note from the Larry Tinker family as well as a notice from the ECOPA asking for nominations of young people interested in applying for a flight training scholarship. C. Members requested that a Get Well Card be sent to Wayne Burkhart and Jim Rosenberry. Wayne will have surgery very soon and Jim is recovering from stitches on his noggin. Rumors suggested they were put there by his wife. D. Ken Weber thanked the group for the get well card we sent while he was in the hospital. E. Dave Johnson read a statement to the group concerning the tone and purpose of the survey that was sent recently to all members. A discussion that followed cleared the air and allows us to proceed. It was suggested that the Executive Committee meet before next month s meeting to discuss the outcome of the survey. F. Brad Buss suggested we find someone to sell rides at our next Pancake Breakfast/ Fly-in. G. Dave Johnson told the group about the calendar from Preferred Airparts that has photos of member aircraft from a past flyout to that facility. Members may want to go the website to order a calendar for themselves. H. A report has been received that the State of Ohio is no longer funding the 21 st Century Grant program and our Wright Flight class will need to find alternative funding to carry on.
