The Newsletter of Shiloh United Methodist Church September 2017 SEPTEMBER 10 WORSHIP TIMES CHANGE Beginning September 10 we will change back to two worship services. The times for service will be 8:00 and 10:15 on mornings. to value Shiloh's tradition of experiencing God early enough to still have plenty of left. Pastor Tyler has been informed we all desire to beat the lunch crowd. BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS SEPTEMBER 24 All creatures, great and small, are invited to Shiloh UMC s Animals during worship, September 24, at Shiloh United Methodist Church. Bring your dogs, cats, fish, rabbits, hamsters, birds, iguanas, or even horses; whether the pets are furry, winged, or with gills. For many, animals are more than pets and hold a special place in our lives as members of our family. This event is an opportunity to thank God for the gift of animals and to ask for a special blessing for the animals that enrich our lives in so many ways. If you are uncomfortable bringing your pet(s), we will be offering collar tags bearing the image of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. A prayerful blessing will be included with each collar tag allowing you to comfortably bless your pet(s) on your own, and/or you can bring a photo of your pet(s). Animals will be offered during both worship services, with likelihood of going outdoors for the blessing. You will be responsible for the actions and safety of your own animals. SEPTEMBER 10 KICKOFF SUNDAY TO INCLUDE POTLUCK CHICKEN LUNCH Wear your favorite football team jersey or colors and join us for Kickoff as we launch into our fall season. Children are encouraged to bring their school backpacks to our 8 am worship service or the 10:15 worship service for a Backpacks. We will bless the children as they begin the new school year. Following the 10:15 service, please join us for a kick-off pot luck. The church will provide the fried chicken and the drinks. Everyone is encouraged to bring a side dish. But if you can t bring a side dish, you are encouraged to join us for both the lunch and some wonderful fellowship time. THE FAITH AND FILM FEATURE MCFARLAND, USA 5:30 PM, SEPT 17, 2017 The Faith and Film season kicks off with September s showing of McFarland USA, starring Kevin Costner and based on a true story. Jim White, a football coach, loses his job and moves with his family to take a position in McFarland, California, one of the poorest towns in the United States. Discovering that some of his students are strong runners, he organizes a boys' cross country team. Under White s coaching, they become champions. Bring a friend, a snack, or just yourself and as always, we ll have a discussion after the movie. Show time: 5:30 pm Sept 17, 2017, Fellowship Room of Shiloh UMC, Run time: 129 min Release date: 2015 Rating: PG

CHOIR PRACTICE SEPTEMBER 10, 9 AM The first choir practice will be on, September 10 at 9:00 am. I have chosen the anthem One Step He Leads for that first. This is the same as Kick-Off and the that Pastor Tyler will be joining us to celebrate Pastor Dave s incredible ministry. We would like to welcome all choir, band and chime members back for another season. We had a great year last year and we plan to continue praising God through our music. Band will rehearse as needed. Warren will continue with the choir and the band and Judy will continue with the chimes. We always have room for interested people to be involved with the music program. See you in choir on, September 10 at 9 am; and the chime choir after church on, September, 17. Musically yours, Warren and Judy Frank SEPTEMBER 19, 7:30 PM BOOK REVIEW Graeme Simsion s novel, The Rosie Project: A Novel, will be the book for discussion at the church. A geneticist with Asperger s disease decides to find a wife using his scientific process. Please join the group for a fun, funny, meaningful evening. Everyone is welcome. Come, listen, talk, and help the group select the next exciting read. UNITED METHODIST WOMEN Ruth Circle will start with the fall meeting on September 15 at 1:30 PM at the church. Lydia Circle will meet September 28 at 7 PM at the church. Remember the program is planned, no food is served, and all participants only need attend. Please mark these times in your personal calendar and plan to attend. The UMW supplied three schools with supplies this fall. Thank you to those who helped. FREE STORE UPDATE As school starts, summer surrenders to fall, and needs rise, the Free Store operates at Evangelical Methodist Church at 345 Broadwater the first and third Saturday of each month. Shiloh s volunteer ladies provide a hot meal for shoppers, and the missions committee provides sacks of dry soup mix for home use. Pat Montgomery, Liz Stanhope, Linda Woolsely, Peg Parker, Lenore Kipp, and a host of others from Shiloh have helped the Free Store become the active, happy place to be. The following thank you was received from a customer: I would like to thank you for the services you provide to the community. I found a pair of pants to wear to work a week ago thru your service and am very grateful! There are many more thank you notes from customers this is just one. Notes & Reflections from Pastor Dave Our time together as pastor and congregation is coming to a close, bringing with it a multitude of feelings and emotions, generously seasoned with anxiety, for both congregation and pastor. As for me, I rest in my faith putting trust in our Creator, Savior, and the Holy Spirit s nudges. I ve tried to embrace that throughout most of my adult life. I have immense hope for Shiloh and Pastor Tyler Amundson as you continue and grow this congregation s missions and ministries with him and his family, and I will continue to hold you all in prayer. There are many dynamics at work when pastors leave a church. Far beyond being known for my music, my preaching, or my downfalls; rather than focusing on my pastoral style or personality, I ask you to consider these more important dynamics: How much closer to God do you feel? How much more have you come to know God during my time here? Have you deepened or expanded your connection with the movements of the Holy Spirit? Have you expanded your connections and relationships with others? This much I know: I am thankful to God for you, the people of Shiloh UMC. May the LORD bless you and keep you. May the LORD s face shine upon and be gracious to you. May the LORD look upon you and grant you all the peace you can handle, and then some. ~ Numbers 6:26 adapt.
