Rock Solid: Laying the foundation for spiritual growth LESSON 7 Salvation A man cannot be thoroughly humbled until he comes to know that salvation is utterly beyond his own powers, counsel, endeavors, will and works and is absolutely dependent upon the will, counsel and pleasure of another. MARTIN LUTHER PRAY FIRST: Three Persons and one God, I bless and praise thee, for love so unmerited, so unspeakable, so wondrous, so mighty to save the lost and raise them to glory. Understanding the Truth What does salvation mean? The word salvation means deliverance or rescue. In the Bible, it can refer to deliverance from sin, physical danger, or eternal judgment. 49

Why Does One Need Salvation? A. According to Romans 3:23, what is every person guilty of? B. What does Romans 6:23 teach are the wages for sin? C. The Bible speaks of four kinds of death. Check the one you believe Romans 6:23 speaks of: Physical death this is when the soul is separated from the body. Spiritual death this is when a person is physically alive but separated from God. Eternal death this is what a person experiences when he or she dies having never trusted in Christ for salvation. Death-like existence this is what the believer feels when sin has interrupted his fellowship with God. In Whom or in What Is Salvation Found? A. Read Luke 2:25-32. When Simeon saw the baby Jesus, what did he say of Him? B. According to Luke 19:10, what did Jesus say He came to do? C. Can salvation be discovered anywhere else or in anyone else? (Read Acts 4:12) D. What did Jesus do in order to save people from spiritual and eternal death? (Read 1 Peter 3:18) What Is Required to Be Saved? A. According to John 16:7-9, what is a ministry of the Holy Spirit? B. According to 2 Corinthians 7:10, what does conviction by the Holy Spirit produce? When a person is convicted by the Holy Spirit, he becomes aware of his sinful condition before God and has a desire to find the solution. C. What does it lead to? Repentance means changing your mind. It is a turning away from sin and turning to God. 50

D. According to Ephesians 2:8-9, what are we saved by? Grace speaks of God s undeserved favor. Grace is receiving what we do not deserve. E. What are we saved through? Faith means trusting in, clinging to, or embracing Jesus Christ who is the object of our faith. John MacArthur F. According to Ephesians 2:8, what are grace and faith called? Discussion: In your own terms, what is a gift? How Is One Saved? A. Read Romans 10:5-13. What must you confess? B. What must you believe? C. According to Romans 10:13, what is God s promise? Have You Received Christ as Your Savior? If not, stop right now and open your heart in prayer to Him. In your own words, call on the name of the Lord to save you (Romans 10:9). How Can You Know if You Are Saved? A. According to 1 John 5:11-13, what are two ways that you can know that you have eternal life? Verses 11-12: Verse 13: 51

B. Here are four evidences that will be seen if a person has truly experienced salvation: 1. 2 Corinthians 5:17: 2. 1 John 3:7-10: 3. 1 John 3:14: 4. Matthew 7:15-20: Every believer does not grow at the same rate, so be careful not to judge too quickly. Leave it up to God to reveal a person s true spiritual condition. Can You Ever Lose Your Salvation? A. According to Philippians 1:6, what is the promise to those in whom God began a work? B. What does the Holy Spirit do to those who hear and believe? (Read Ephesians 1:13-14) C. For how long? (Read Ephesians 4:30) The Day of Redemption is the day when believers die and go to be with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:5-9), or when Jesus comes to take us home (John 14:3; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17). D. What does Jesus promise to all who know Him? (Read John 10:27-29) Embracing the Truth Knitting the truth of God s Word into our lives Read 1 John 3:1-3. Spend a few moments in prayer thanking Christ for saving your soul! 52
