215 East 13th Avenue - Cordele, GA 31010 PROPERTY HISTORY EBERHARDT & BARRY INC. April 14, 1889 First Baptist Church was organized when 23 people met to establish the church. Sept. 1889 Sabbath School was organized with D. B. Register as the first Superintendent. Oct. 6, 1889, Rev. R. B. Taylor was called as the first pastor. A church building was erected on the Northwest corner of 14 th Avenue and 7 th Street at a value of $2000.00 Oct. 12, 1889 First Baptist Church was admitted to the Houston Baptist Association. Woman s Missionary Society was organized. By 1893, the church had grown to 145 members. 1896 A pastorium was erected behind the church, but sold in 1898 to pay off the indebtedness on it. 1902 Baptist Young People s Union was organized. In 1902 the Pastor s salary was increased from $90.00 to $100.00 per month. 1905 The church had 313 members with 188 in Sabbath School and a property value of $5500.00. Plans were begun to build a new church facility on the Northwest corner of 6 th Street and 13 th Avenue. 1907- Four lots were purchased from Dr. D. J. Williams (Ed s grandfather) for $7500.00 for the building of a new house of worship. The first Trustees of the church were elected and empowered to receive and hold any property the church might acquire. The pastor is instructed to use a horse and buggy from the livery stable in his work, at the expense of the church, when he saw fit to do so. October 1910 A new ministry of broadcasting the morning service began on radio station WMJM. In October 1912, the church began to dream again of a new church house. A committee was appointed to investigate probable cost of a new building. In conference on Jan. 12, 1913, the committee tells of tentative plans for a new building. Two months later, definite plans were submitted, but no building contract to be let until money is in hand. The Jr. BYPU was asked to take over the janitor s job and let the money go to the new building fund. Through various means, $25,000 had been raised by Oct. 12, 1913 to justify a building and furnishings. Church in conference, voted to limit the expenditure to $30,000. One week later, conference voted unanimously to proceed with the plans for the new church. The building contract was let to Little and Phillips. Light colored brick was chosen, but cost more, so some concessions had to be made for the extra expenditure. A decision was made to complete the basement rather than put a finish on the floors. The ladies got out and raised enough money to finish the floors. The old property was sold for $4762.50 to F. E. Fenn, who sold the building to Mt. Zion First African Baptist Church. It was moved to the S. W. corner of 12 th Street and 13 th Avenue, rolling it on logs, pulled by mules. 1914 The church was completed and the basement was finished at a total cost of $32,755.26. A piano was purchased. Rev. J. H. Coin preached the first sermon in the new building in Sept. 1914 with 878 in attendance. In Oct. 1914, a committee was authorized to purchase a pipe organ at a cost of $3000.00 installed. In November 1914, hitching posts were installed at a cost of $13.50. 22

215 East 13th Avenue - Cordele, GA 31010 PROPERTY HISTORY EBERHARDT & BARRY INC. May 1917- The pipe organ was purchased and installed. 1920 The Men s Bible Class erected a two story wooden building on the North side of the church. Sunday School enrolment was 1000 in 1920. In April 1936, a tornado destroyed O Neal School and First Baptist Church opened all Sunday school rooms for classrooms until the school could be rebuilt. June 12, 1940 Mrs. Ada Hill led the 1 st Vacation Bible School. Nov. 2, 1947 The 58 th Anniversary of First Baptist Church was celebrated along with the First Anniversary of Clifton E. Fite as pastor. His sermon title was Building for the Kingdom. Plans for the New Educational Building were revealed by C. C. Greer, Chairman of the Building Committee. The Building and Finance Committee recommended that Sunday, Nov. 23, 1947 be designated as Building Fund Day for our church. On this day all the members of the church are cordially invited and sincerely urged to bring a worthy offering for the new Educational Building. 1948 The beautiful Carillon Bells which are played each Sunday morning & on other occasions, were presented to the church by Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Garvin in memory of their son, J. W. Garvin, Jr. A special service of dedication of the bells was held Easter Sunday morning, March 28, 1948. 1949 A Three-story brick building replaced the existing structure that was built on the North side of the church in 1920. Oct. 29, 1950 The New Educational Building was dedicated. 1952 Renovation and redecoration of the church sanctuary was completed. The choir loft was placed behind the pulpit. Feb. 1954 Brotherhood was organized. 1960 Dr. John Gibson was called as Pastor. A pastorium on 24 th Ave. was purchased for $25,000. Dr. Gibson began the Buy a Brick program, looking forward to further building expansion. A house and lot adjoining the church property on 13 th Ave. was purchased. 1970 The Chapel and Two-story Education Building were built on the East side of the church. On June 25, 1978, there were 234 in Sunday School, 279 in Morning Worship and 119 in Evening Worship. Regular Offering - $2,050 - Weekly Needs $3528 - Together We Build Offering- $2,089 - Together We Build Offering YTD- $20,911 July 2, 1978 A special called conference was held to consider the Renovation Committee s recommendation of an architect. This was also the 1 st Sunday for Zeno Wells as Minister of Music. 1979 The Sanctuary and the 3 Story building were completely renovated. First Baptist Church also celebrated their 90 th Anniversary that year. 1987 A new parking facility was added to the church when several lots on the South side of the church were purchased. 1989 First Baptist Church celebrated its 100 th Anniversary Celebration. The theme was A Proud Past and A Promising Future. To God be the glory for all He has done and all He will do. 2014 The current church building is 100 years old. 23
