Healthcare Chaplains Ministry Association Prayer: connecting with God 77 th Annual Clinical Conference May 1 4, 2016 Calvary Chapel Conference Center Twin Peaks 26409 Highway 189, Twin Peaks, CA 92391

HCMA 77 th Annual Clinical Conference May 1-4 2016 THEME SESSIONS Sunday 7 p.m. Opening Session The Postures of Prayer Presenter: Jeffrey Funk Communication with God does not require a certain physical position. False religion places a premium on external behavior, but true Christianity is concerned with the heart. Even so, our posture in prayer can give an external expression to the attitudes of our hidden heart. If prayer is a continuous action of our daily walk with God ( praying without ceasing ), then we need to be flexible in our postures of prayer. Tonight we will look at five postures of prayer, discuss their symbolism, and see how they relate to our personal connection with God. 1. To describe the meaning of each posture as a form of the communication of our soul with God. 2. To practice each posture so we can become comfortable with each of them. Monday 9 a.m. Main Session #1 An Interactive Life with God What else is there when we get stuck in checkbox spirituality doing good things that good Christians are supposed to do? Jesus invites us to abide to hang out with Him all day long. As we do so, Jesus pulls us into an invitational way of being with Him. 1. To articulate the difference between a mechanical approach to life with God and a relational approach. 2. To articulate various ways one might abide in Christ. Monday 10:30 a.m. Main Session #2 I Am Loved: God as High Relater A human s source of identity and confidence is grounded in a tangible, everyday grasp that our highly relational God is for us. Out of God s pre-genesis, pre-creation intention to build a beloved community comes God s determination to build a shared life experience with us. This meets our deep soul need of belonging. Educational Objectives: 1. To identify a sense of being known and loved by God as the central issue that undergirds spirituality. 2. To offer descriptors for what the voice of God may sound like based upon James 3:17 and 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. Main Speaker Monday & Tuesday Jan Johnson She is a writer, speaker and spiritual director. She holds degrees in Christian education and spirituality. She has written 17 books, including Enjoying the Presence of God, When the Soul Listens, Spiritual Formation as Abiding (DVD Series), and Renovation of the Heart in Daily Practice (with Dallas Willard). Everything she writes and speaks about flows out of these three areas: Spiritual formation: Connecting with God in order to let God transform us into Christlikeness. As we do the connecting with God, God does the perfecting in us. Partnering with God in caring for the voiceless: The result of cherishing the compassionate lifestyle of Jesus and arranging our lives to love this world that God so loves. Living with purposeful intentionality: Life today is characterized by too much activity with too little meaning, on glitz instead of substance. Focusing on how God is calling me to let my heart be broken by the things that break the heart of God prods me to partner with God in efforts that reconcile people to God, to others and even to themselves. She has free books and audios on her website. Check it out: www.janjohnson.org.

HCMA 77 th Annual Clinical Conference May 1-4 2016 THEME SESSIONS Tuesday 9 a.m. Main Session #3 Trusting God No Matter What I have everything I need (Ps 23:1b) is a radical statement in a culture ridden with fear and scarcity that traps us in self-protecting, self-focused living. As we move from the house of fear to the house of trust, we find not only relief from fear and stress but also a smoother path into becoming the kind of person God is inviting us to be. Keynote Speaker Sunday & Wednesday 1. To identify responses to fear and scarcity and how they scar the human soul. 2. To identify and describe the various pictures and metaphors of Psalm 23. Tuesday 10:30 a.m. Main Session #4 Practicing the Presence of God Prayer has become a complicated activity to many, but in its simplest form it involves praying at all times in life s ordinary circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Specific suggestions are offered with learning practices such as breath prayers and picture prayers. 1. To identify and describe practicing the presence of God as a core spiritual discipline of life with God, especially that of a chaplain. 2. To describe various ways that people can go about practicing God s presence. Wednesday 9 a.m. Closing Session Transforming Seasons of Prayer Presenter: Jeffrey Funk Our spiritual journey is a marathon of seasons. Sometimes you can hold your own. Sometimes your side aches, you can t get your breath, and you don t feel all that good. Prayer is an intentional way to keep moving through the seasons. It s not a magical means to an effortless race. Prayer simply provides us with an exercise that keeps us open to God and aware of the limits of our endurance. This session we will look at these seasons and how prayer can transform us as we go through them. Educational Objectives: 1. To describe the four seasons of our spiritual life. 2. To identify and describe how prayer helps with the transformation process during these seasons. Jeffrey Funk Jeffrey is the Executive Director of HCMA since 2000. He trained as a Chaplain with HCMA at USC Medical Center in 1991. He was certified with HCMA as a BCC in 1992 and as a Board Certified Teaching Chaplain (BCTC) in 1998. He earned an MDiv from Talbot School of Theology (1978) and now teaches a class on Pastoral Care and Chaplaincy there. He has been involved in pastoral care since 1971 when he was first licensed to the ministry. He served with CAM Int l during the summer of 1974 and 1975 in Guatemala. Besides being a Hospital Chaplain, he has served as a Police Chaplain and a Chaplain with a local troop of the Boy Scouts of America. He has taught pastors in West Africa on pastoral care and chaplaincy and is a conference speaker on various topics related to pastoral care and chaplaincy. He has written three books: As Someone Dies: What to Expect and Ways to Respond, After Someone Dies: What Now?, and Coming Alongside: Basic Pastoral Care at the Bedside. Jeffrey has been married 40 years and enjoys gardening. He especially likes to go camping and fishing with his grandkids.

HCMA 77 th Annual Clinical Conference May 1-4, 2016 PLENARY SESSIONS Monday 7 p.m. Sharing and Praise Facilitators: Chaplain Warren Rich and Chaplain Mary Lowe This session is a time of celebration. It s an opportunity for members to declare how we have seen God using us for His glory in bringing His healing to a hurting world. It s an opportunity to praise Him together for His goodness in our lives and ministries. 1. To articulate praise to God for His goodness in our lives and ministries. 2. To articulate ways in which we have seen the divine at work in and through us as we have come alongside the sick suffering. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 7 a.m. Prayer Care Forum Facilitator: Dr. Jan Johnson [CCEU per session = 1] Monday: Praying the Shield of St Patrick Join us as we explore this prayer used for centuries and enjoy invoking God s marvelous power and presence. We ll pray it antiphonally as a group, privately for another person (sharing in a small group), and privately for our own longings and needs. Tuesday: Confession Is Better Than Guilt We ll explore often-overlooked, grace-drenched features of confessional prayer and then experiment with private confessional prayer to God and then with (very safe!) expressions of confession in small groups. Wednesday: Praise Can Be Fun We ll offer Psalm 145 to God in praise in a somewhat energetic and interactive way, and then branch out to our own private expressions of praise to God from Psalm 145. Tuesday 1:30 p.m. Small Group Discussion Practical Issues Facing Chaplains Today Presenter: Individuals within Small Group This will be a time when participants can meet together in small groups in order to discuss the practical issues that chaplains are dealing with and to learn from one another how to confront them. 1. To learn from one another how to manage the key issues with which chaplains are confronted in today s healthcare setting. 2. To grow in our understanding of different ways to do chaplain ministry. Monday 1:30 p.m. HCMA Annual Business Meeting [CCEU = 1] Presenters: Jonathan Harrell Board Chair; Timothy Large Board Treasurer; and Jeffrey Funk Executive Director This session is set aside for members to hear a brief overview of HCMA from the perspective of the Board Chair, to receive a financial update from the Board Treasurer, and to hear a summary of key issues from the Executive Director. Members will also vote for new Board members and be able to ask questions of Board members about HCMA during this business meeting. Organizational Objectives: 1. To inform members about the status of HCMA. 2. To facilitate dialogue between members and the Board. Tuesday 7 p.m. Certificate Ceremony [CCEU = 1] This is a time to honor those who have finished chaplaincy training and the certification process and to be reminded that being a chaplain is a high calling. 1. To be reminded of what it means to be a professional chaplain. 2. To give honor where honor is due.

It was a Resort/Conference Center named The Monte Corona, which hosted conferences, workshops, seminars, and training programs. Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa bought the Center in 1975 and used it initially as a Bible College and Conference Center. The Bible College has since moved out and the Center was newly renovated in 2001. Their calling is to provide a place where we can come meet with our Lord and be wholly refreshed. It is their desire to bless us while we are staying with them. To that end, the following activities are available: Coffee House: Open during specific hours. It also lends out equipment for the pool tables, ping pong tables, and numerous other games. Upper Room Book Store: This is a perfect place to browse and pick up a book to enjoy during the conference or later, and gifts to take home. The Lobby: A great place to sit back, to relax by the fire, and to fellowship with other chaplains. Hiking Trails: There are a number of short trails within or near the Conference Center that will take you on a walk through the beautiful alpine wilderness forest. Enjoy! MUSIC: Craig Allen Craig has been in full time church worship ministry for 25 years, including over ten years as Worship Pastor at Redemption Hill Church in Whittier, CA. He loves to lead music that is solidly Scriptural, musically engaging, and Christ honoring. Craig mentors other young worship leaders and enjoys opportunities to preach and to arrange and mix music. Worship Objective: I hope that our times of worship together will be refreshing to your souls, and helpful for re-igniting your joy in your ministry to people. Lake Arrowhead Boat Ride Experience the beauty and excitement of a narrated tour of Lake Arrowhead aboard the elegant Lake Arrowhead Queen. The splendor and serenity of Lake Arrowhead s lush forests, sparkling water and blue skies glide by, as you sit back and enjoy close-up views of exquisite lakefront homes and learn about the fascinating history of the lake. The cost is $14 per person cash. You may sign up at the Conference.
