An Nasiha and Al Huda Courses Presents

Ramadhan It is the 9 th month in the Islamic Calendar It is the only month mentioned by name in the Holy Quran In this Month; The Holy Quran was revealed in its entirety [Surah Al Qadr - 97:1] Revelation commenced The Prophet of Allah Prophethood was instructed to announce his

Holy Quran on Ramadhan Ramadhan is the month in which the Quran was revealed, as guidance for mankind, with clear proofs of the guidance and the criterion [Surah Al Baqarah - 2:185]

Sacred Hadith on Ramadhan Oh Allah make Rajab and Shabaan blessed for us and grant us Ramadhan [Musnad Ahmad] If they were to know the importance of Ramadhan they would wish for the whole year to be Ramadhan [Musnad Abu Ya la] They (companions and predecessors) would spend six months supplicating to reach Ramadhan and spend six months pleading for its acceptance [Lataaif ul Ma aarif] O Allah, give me security (health and wellbeing) in Ramadhan and safeguard Ramadhan for me and protect me from your disobedience in it [Dua of The Messenger of Allah ]

Congratulating on the arrival of Ramadhan! Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah Almighty be pleased with him) states; The Prophet would congratulate his companions by saying; The month of Ramadhan has come to you, it is a blessed month, Allah Almighty has prescribed its fasts upon you. In it the gates of Paradise are opened, the doors of Hell closed and the devils locked up. In it is a night better than a thousand months and whoever is deprived of its guidance is surely deprived [An- Nasa i]

Holy Quran on Fasting O you who believe! Fasting has been prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain righteousness [Surah Al Baqarah - 2:183] (The above command came in Shabaan 2 A.H)

Sacred Hadith on Fasting The Fast is for Me and I am its reward [Hadith Qudsi - Muslim] There are two joys for the fasting person, one at Iftaar and one at meeting his Lord [Musnad Imam Ahmad] The Fast is a shield from the wrath of Allah [Bayhaqi] The Fast is a shield from Hell, just like one of your shields in a battle [Nasai] The fast acts as a shield, as long as it is not ruined it was asked how does one ruin it? The Prophet replied by lying and backbiting [Tabrani]

Ramadhan; Month of The Holy Quran Abdullah ibn Amr (May Allah Almighty be pleased with him) relates that the Messenger of Allah said: Fasting and Quran will intercede for the slave on the Day of Judgement. Fasting will say: My Lord, I stopped him from food and pleasures by day so grant me intercession for him. The Quran will say: I stopped him from sleep by night so grant me intercession for him. He said, They will both be given intercession. [Musnad Imam Ahmad]

What is Fasting? Lexically: Fasting is to refrain or abstain from something. Legally: To abstain during the day (dawn to sunset) from fulfilling the desire of the stomach and carnal desires, whilst intending it for Allah Almighty.

Conditions which make Fasting an obligation: 1. Muslim 2. Sane 3. Mature 4. Free from ill health 5. Free from menstruation and postnatal bleeding 6. Resident

Intention The Fast is valid if the intention is made during the night until the middle of the day (mid- point between dawn and sunset) The above is valid for the following types of fasts: Month of Ramadhan Vows to fast a specific day Nafl (Voluntary) Sayyidah Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) narrates, The Prophet came to me one day and said Is there anything with you (to eat)? I said no thereupon he said I shall then fast [Muslim]

Intention For the following Fasts the intention is required before dawn and the type of fast needs to be specified: Unperformed Ramadhan Fast (Qada) Making up a ruined Nafl Fast (Qada of Nafl) When one is making a Kaffarah Fast If one vows to Fast on a non specified day

Situations which do not nullify the Fast Eating, drinking or having marital relations forgetfully Wet dream (male or female) Applying oil to the body or Kohl to the eyes (even if it reaches the throat) Cupping (Hijaamah) If a person backbites (the reward is lost) If one intends to break his fast but does not do so

Situations which do not nullify the Fast Smoke entering the throat unintentionally If dust, dust of flour or a fly or the taste of medicine enters the throat If one awakens in a state of Janabah or starts the fast whilst requiring a ghusl. If one enters a river and water enters inside the opening of the ears Swimming Giving blood

Situations which do not nullify the Fast Vomiting unintentionally, even if it is a mouthful and even if some of it goes back down the throat Vomiting intentionally less then a mouthful (even if some goes back down the throat, it does not nullify the fast) Swallowing food already in the mouth which is less then the size of a chick pea (was there before the fast started) Chewing something like a sesame seed that comes from outside the mouth as long as the taste does not reach the throat Intramuscular injection

Situations which nullify the Fast Start of menstruation/postnatal bleeding (Must make up Fast for that day, regardless of the time discharge started) Accidentally swallowing water used for gargling Eating the pre- dawn meal believing it to be night but fajr has commenced or breaking the fast believing it to be maghrib but the sun has not yet set Consuming anything that is not nutritious (sand, wood) Any particles deliberately inhaled through the nose There is no penalty for the above, only the Fast of the day needs to be made up

Situations which Require Expiation (Kaffarah) When is Kaffarah due? During the month of Ramadhan if one intended the fast before dawn and: 1- Intentionally eats or drinks without an acceptable reason 2- Intentionally has sexual intercourse Then, he or she is required to perform a Kaffarah Kaffarah The expiation is to free a slave; if that is not possible, to fast two consecutive months; and if that is too difficult, to feed sixty poor people (two meals) NB: the broken fast must also be made up

Necessary to Refrain from Eating If a person breaks their fast If a women becomes free from menstrual or post- natal bleeding after fa If a boy matures If a non Muslim becomes Muslim NB: the latter two do not make up the fast of that day

Disliked acts whilst Fasting To taste food/drink To chew Kissing etc. Gathering saliva and swallowing it To do anything that will make a person weaker such as cupping or acupuncture (excluding working or sitting exams!)

Recommended acts of Fasting The Pre- dawn Meal (Sehri) Observe Sehri, for verily there is blessing in the Sehri [Bukhari] Hazrat Irbaadh bin Saariya (May Allah Almighty be pleased with him) narrates; The Prophet invited me to Sehri in Ramadhan by saying Come! Join in the blessed meal [Musnad Imam Ahmad] To delay the Sehri to the time it takes to recite fifty verses of the Holy Quran

Recommended acts of Fasting To open the fast with haste after sunset Increase in the recitation of The Holy Quran Be more generous Use miswaak

Dua at the time of Iftaar And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then Indeed, I am near. I accept the supplication of the supplicant when he calls on Me [Surah Al Baqarah - 2:186] Verily at the time of Iftaar the fasting person has a dua that is not rejected [Ibn Majah]

Those excused from Fasting A Traveller (by definition of Islamic Law) Illness or delay in recovery Pregnant/nursing woman if she fears for her child Fear of death due to hunger or thirst Women who have menstruation/post natal bleeding

Attaining Piety by Safeguarding the Heart Stomach Physical Desires Fame and Wealth Greed Competition Jealousy Ostentation - Boasting Arrogance - Rancour Envy Enmity Hate Injustice Corruption

Fasting is armor. So if it is a day in which one of you is fasting, then he should not be vile in speech nor should he be sinful nor should he be ignorant. And if someone reviles him, then he should say: I am a person that is fasting. Perhaps all a person fasting derives from his fast is hunger and thirst. Whoever does not abandon false speech and acting upon it, then Allah is not in need of him abandoning his food and drink.

Attaining Piety by Safeguarding the Body Stomach being the centre of bodily powers and energies From the stomach comes weakness or strength, piety or disobedience and wickedness or righteousness Excessive eating instigates to what is unlawful Control of the tongue, sight, ears and thoughts Engaging in Quran, education, zikr and salawat Using time to reflect

I tikaf (Retreat) Imam Zuhri (May Allah have mercy on him) Said: I am amazed at the people in how they abandoned the I'tikaf, whilst the Prophet would perform this action. They leave it whilst the Prophet did not, until he passed.

Eid Day and Beyond Offer your 5 daily prayers Read Quran, even if it a small amount Meet your family and friends Spend money on your family and relatives (Fitrana) Observe modesty and dress according to the Sunnah Remember; the devil was locked up, now he is out are you going to obey him or Obey Allah Almighty & His Messenger?
