6 th Grade Family Bible Assignment Due Sept 2, 2014 But (the disciples) did not understand this saying; it s meaning was hidden from the Luke 9:45 But later He opened their minds to understand the scriptures Luke 24:45 A middle school student discovered a Holy Card in the family Bible which read, Every time the Bible is opened, wisdom is gained. Understanding the words LITERALLY, she thought the mere physical act of opening the Bible with her hands was all that was necessary to gain wisdom from the holy book. So she often sat with the Bible on her lap, repeatedly opening and closing the Bible to gain the promised wisdom. Surely you know that you must also read the words to gain the wisdom found within its pages, But, how often do you do that? Do you know how to use a Bible? And if you do know how to use it, are you listening to its message? In the first passage quote above, the disciples were not able to grasp the meaning of Jesus words before his death and resurrection. They could not grasp His message and what it meant for them. However, after he appeared to them just before His ascension, their minds were opened and they understood! How about you? Are you ready to learn how to read God s word and find out what he has to say to you? Next year, your family assignment will be to study the Gospel of Mark. In preparation for that assignment, we have put together a get to know your Bible activity for you and your family to complete together this year. If you do not have a Bible, we recommend The New American Catholic Youth Bible which comes in both paperback and hard cover. It is written with language that is easily understood, and has notes and sections on how the Pray It, Study It, and Live It. Most of all, we hope you and your family have fun reading and learning from God s words! God Bless!

BIBLE SEARCH 1) Look at the Table of Contents. The Bible is divided into two main sections. What are they? Find the Old Testament. What are the first 5 books? These are called the Pentateuch. Can you guess why? 2) What is the first book? This means birth or history of origin. 3) Look at the first several chapter headings of this book. What story is this? 4) What is the second book? This mean exit. What is this book about? 5) The 10 Commandments can be found in the book of Exodus during the story of the Israelites time in the desert after their departure from Egypt. The 10 Commandments were also written again in Deuteronomy (which means repetition of the law ). An easy way to find them quickly is to remember that 5+5=10. Look in the 5 th book (Deuteronomy), in the 5 th chapter and you will find the 10 commandments. Try it! 6) To find the New Testament remember the Trinity (3 parts)and that the Bible is really 3 parts: a. 1 st of 3 = Old (before Christ) b. 2 nd of 3 =Gospel (during Christ s life) c. 3 rd of 3 =rest of the New Testament (after Christ s ascension to Heaven) The New Testament starts with the Gospels approximately 2/3 into the Bible. Try it and see how close you get.. 7) Find the 4 Gospels. What are they? 8) What is the first book of the New Testament after the Gospels? What is the significance of its name? 9) Most of the books in the New Testament are letters? Who wrote most of these? 10) What is the shortest book in the New Testament? 11) What is the last book of the Bible? This type of writing is Apocalyptic or symbolic. Look for an example of this in Chapter 6. Why do you think this was written in such a way? 12) Look at the Table of Contents. What does it mean when there is a number in front of the book name? 13) Scripture is written by Book Chapter: Verse. Practice by finding and reading: a. Genesis 7:1 b. John I 1-2 (who was with God in the beginning?) c. John 3:16

Contributed by John Kezer I once made a remark about the hidden books of the Bible. It was a lulu, kept people looking so hard for facts, and for others, it was a revelation. Some were in a jam, especially since the names of the books are not capitalized, but the truth finally struck home to numbers of readers. To others, it was a real job. We want it to be a most fascinating few moments for you. Yes, there will be some really easy ones to spot. Others may require judges to help them. I will quickly admit, it usually takes a minister to find one of the 17, and there will be loud lamentations when it is found. A little lady says she brews a cup of tea so she can concentrate better. See how well you can compete. Relax now, for you really can find the names of the 17 books of the Bible in here somewhere. (One preacher found 16 books in 20 minutes. It took him three weeks to find the 17 th one). NOTE: we helped you by underlining one, can you find 16 more?
