"Attitudes Needed In Congregational Work" Attitudes Toward Our Selves INTRODUCTION 1. The right attitudes are ABSOLUTELY necessary - Psalms 100:2-4 Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. 3 Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. 4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. As Christians work together in a local congregation,... All the talent in the world cannot make up for wrong attitudes With the right attitudes, our efforts in service to the Lord are enhanced and live up to their full potential 2. To Define: A State of mind or a feeling, disposition n 1 : posture 2 : a mental position or feeling with regard to a fact or state 3 : the position of something in relation to something else In my own word s One s perception of something; this in turn, stimulates, and directs his reaction to, or his interaction with it. How do I perceive myself? When you look in the mirror what do you see? Attitudes Toward Our Selves A. A HUMBLE ESTIMATION OF ONE'S SELF IS VERY IMPORTANT Page 1 of 5

1. It is the heart with which God can work Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 2. We should live our life with all lowliness Ephesians 4:1-3 I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, 2 with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, 3 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace 3. Everything should be done in lowliness of mind Philippians 2:1-5 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. 4. Having this quality of humility means that we see ourselves as God sees us - Romans 12:3,16; Psalms 51:16,17 a. God s creation b. In reference to value - We are equal with our fellowman - B. CONTRASTING PRIDE AND HUMILITY 1. The Pharisee and Publican - Luke 18:9-17; a. The proud are Self seeking; Self trusting; Self serving; Weak & carnal b. The humble are Seeks God; Trusts God; Serves God; Strong and spiritual Page 2 of 5

2. Humility includes a willingness to serve, even to do "tedious tasks John 13:6-17 a. No one is too good to do little things!!! b. There is nothing wrong with allowing others to help us C. TEACHABLE...ROM 12:3, 16 1. Requires: a. Humility Matthew 18:3,4 b. Wisdom - Proverbs 1:2-7; 15:31-33; Hebrews 12:3-17 c. Hunger 1 Peter 2:2; Matthew 5:6 2. All of us need to be teachable because we all have things we need to learn!! a. Children Reverence Love b. Teens Humility c. Young Adults Gratitude d. Middle Aged The Faith e. Elderly Cooperation Self-control Patience Do We Seek Opportunities To Study God s Word? C. HONESTY TOWARD OUR MISTAKES...JAMES 5:16 1. Self evaluation in the light of God s Word demands that we are honest with ourselves!! a. There are things that only we and God know about us! - 2 Corinthians 13:5; b. Honest evaluation of self is not always easy!! - Matthew 7:1-5 Page 3 of 5

2. We MUST be honest with ourselves when it comes to our: Sins Mistakes Faith Abilities Limitations This includes a willingness to admit our mistakes James 5:16 And a willingness to correct them Acts 8:22 - Everyone makes a mistakes; a congregation that functions well and grows is one filled with people who learn from their mistakes! C. We need to have group discussion Psalms 103:1-5 Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: 3 Who forgives all my iniquities, Who heals all my diseases, 4 Who redeems my life from destruction, Who crowns me with lovingkindness and tender mercies, 5 Who satisfies my mouth with good things, So that my youth is renewed like the eagle s. as a sinner he forgives me V3 as a sick man he heals me V3 as a slave he redeems me V4 as a son he crowns me V4 as a saint he satisfies me V5 c. We need to be submissive James 1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves d. We need to forgive ourselves Luke 6:37 Page 4 of 5

Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven CONCLUSION Do you have the attitude that you should have towards God and yourself? Are we humble? Are we teachable? Are we submissive? Are we willing to admit our mistakes? Are we forgiving towards ourselves? Page 5 of 5
