A Covenant and a Commitment 8 / 30 / 14 Deuteronomy 29:1-13 Larry Feldman Deuteronomy 7:6, 7, 11 6 "For you are a holy people to the L-rd your G-d; the L-rd your G-d has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. 7 "The L-rd did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. Deuteronomy 7:6, 7, 11 11 "Therefore, you shall keep the commandment and the statutes and the judgments which I am commanding you today, to do them. 1 Peter 2:9-10 9 But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR G-D'S OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF G-D; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY. We should commit ourselves to G-d because of His faithful calling and salvation of His people. 1

Romans 9:4 4 who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons, and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Law and the temple service and the promises. 1. Abrahamic Covenant Genesis 12:1-3, 7 1 Now the L-rd said to Abram, "Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father's house, To the land which I will show you; 2 And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing; 3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed. Genesis 12:1-3, 7 7 The L-rd appeared to Abram and said, "To your descendants I will give this land " So he built an altar there to the L-rd who had appeared to him. Genesis 15:18 On that day the L-rd made a covenant with Abram, saying, "To your descendants I have given this land, From the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates. 2

1. Abrahamic Covenant 2. Davidic Covenant 2 Samuel 7:11-12, 16 11 The L-rd also declares to you that the L-rd will make a house for you. 12 "When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. 16 "Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever." Luke 1:31-33 31 "And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Yeshua. 32 "He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the L-rd G-d will give Him the throne of His father David; 33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end." 1. Abrahamic Covenant 2. Davidic Covenant 3. New Covenant Jeremiah 31:31-34 31 "Behold, days are coming," declares the L-rd, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them," declares the L-rd. Jeremiah 31:31-34 33 "But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days," declares the L-rd, "I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their G-d, and they shall be My people. 3

Jeremiah 31:31-34 34 "They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, 'Know the L-rd,' for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them," declares the L-rd, "for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more." Hebrews 7:18-19, 22 18 For, on the one hand, there is a setting aside of a former commandment because of its weakness and uselessness 19 (for the Law made nothing perfect), and on the other hand there is a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to G-d. 22 so much the more also Yeshua has become the guarantee of a better covenant. Hebrews 8:6-9, 13 6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises. 7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion sought for a second. Hebrews 8:6-9, 13 8 For finding fault with them, He says, "BEHOLD, DAYS ARE COMING, SAYS THE L-RD, WHEN I WILL EFFECT A NEW COVENANT WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AND WITH THE HOUSE OF JUDAH; 9 NOT LIKE THE COVENANT WHICH I MADE WITH THEIR FATHERS ON THE DAY WHEN I TOOK THEM BY THE HAND TO LEAD THEM OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT; FOR THEY DID NOT CONTINUE IN MY COVENANT. Hebrews 8:6-9, 13 13 When He said, "A new covenant," He has made the first obsolete But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear. to 1. Abrahamic Covenant 2. Davidic Covenant 3. New Covenant 4. Land Covenant 4

Deuteronomy 29:1 These are the words of the covenant which the L-rd commanded Moses to make with the sons of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant which He had made with them at Horeb. 1. Abrahamic Covenant 2. Davidic Covenant 3. New Covenant 4. Land Covenant 5. Mosaic Covenant B. G-d s faithfulness to us Psalm 53:1-3 1 The fool has said in his heart, "There is no G-d. They are corrupt, and have committed abominable injustice; there is no one who does good. 2 G-d has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men to see if there is anyone who understands, who seeks after G-d. 3 Every one of them has turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one. Mathew 11:25-28 25 At that time Yeshua said, "I praise You, Father, L-rd of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. 26 "Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. 27 "All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. Mathew 11:25-28 28 "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavyladen, and I will give you rest. 5

Ephesians 2:1-5, 8-9 1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. Ephesians 2:1-5, 8-9 4 But G-d, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Messiah (by grace you have been saved). 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of G-d; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. II. G-d s deliverance for His people II. G-d s deliverance for His people A. G-d saved Israel Deuteronomy 29:2-4 2 And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, "You have seen all that the L-rd did before your eyes in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and all his servants and all his land; 3 the great trials which your eyes have seen, those great signs and wonders. 4 "Yet to this day the L-rd has not given you a heart to know, nor eyes to see, nor ears to hear. Deuteronomy 29:5-6 5 "I have led you forty years in the wilderness; your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandal has not worn out on your foot. 6 "You have not eaten bread, nor have you drunk wine or strong drink, in order that you might know that I am the L-rd your G-d. 6

Deuteronomy 29:7-8 7 "When you reached this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon and Og the king of Bashan came out to meet us for battle, but we defeated them; 8 and we took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of the Manassites. Numbers 21:21-26, 33-35 21 Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, saying, 22 "Let me pass through your land. We will not turn off into field or vineyard; we will not drink water from wells. We will go by the king's highway until we have passed through your border. 23 But Sihon would not permit Israel to pass through his border So Sihon gathered all his people and went out against Israel in the wilderness, and came to Jahaz and fought against Israel. Numbers 21:21-26, 33-35 24 Then Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the sons of Ammon; for the border of the sons of Ammon was Jazer. 25 Israel took all these cities and Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all her villages. Numbers 21:21-26, 33-35 26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken all his land out of his hand, as far as the Arnon. 33 Then they turned and went up by the way of Bashan, and Og the king of Bashan went out with all his people, for battle at Edrei. Numbers 21:21-26, 33-35 34 But the L-rd said to Moses, "Do not fear him, for I have given him into your hand, and all his people and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon. 35 So they killed him and his sons and all his people, until there was no remnant left him; and they possessed his land. Deuteronomy 29:9 "So keep the words of this covenant to do them, that you may prosper in all that you do. 7

II. G-d s deliverance for His people A. G-d saved Israel B. G-d saves and blesses us II. G-d s deliverance for His people A. G-d saved Israel B. G-d saves and blesses us John 10:10 "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. III. G-d s desire for His people III. G-d s desire for His people A. G-d called Israel to be His special people Deuteronomy 29:10-12 10 "You stand today, all of you, before the L-rd your G-d: your chiefs, your tribes, your elders and your officers, even all the men of Israel, 11 your little ones, your wives, and the alien who is within your camps, from the one who chops your wood to the one who draws your water, 12 that you may enter into the covenant with the L-rd your G-d, and into His oath which the L-rd your G-d is making with you today, Deuteronomy 4:5-8 5 "See, I have taught you statutes and judgments just as the L-rd my G-d commanded me, that you should do thus in the land where you are entering to possess it. 6 "So keep and do them, for that is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes and say, 'Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. 8

Deuteronomy 4:5-8 7 "For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as is the L-rd our G-d whenever we call on Him? 8 "Or what great nation is there that has statutes and judgments as righteous as this whole law which I am setting before you today? Deuteronomy 29:13 13 in order that He may establish you today as His people and that He may be your G-d, just as He spoke to you and as He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. III. G-d s desire for His people A. G-d called Israel to be His special people B. G-d called us to be His special people Romans 8:28-30 28 And we know that G-d causes all things to work together for good to those who love G-d, to those who are called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; 30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified. Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of G-d is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Messiah Yeshua for good works, which G-d prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. 9

Titus 3:5, 6, 8 5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Yeshua Messiah our Savior. Titus 3:5, 6, 8 8 This is a trustworthy statement; and concerning these things I want you to speak confidently, so that those who have believed G-d will be careful to engage in good deeds. These things are good and profitable for men. Titus 2:14-15 14 He who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. 15 These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you. Because G-d created, called, redeemed, and saved Israel they should... Because G-d sought, found, called, and saved us... We should commit ourselves to G-d because of His faithful calling and salvation of His people. 10
