It is illegal, but that doesn t prevent it from occurring. Because prisons, jails, immigrant detention facilities, mental health institutions, youth detention facilities, and other places of detention are often not monitored, torture and abuse can occur often by guards and other employees. The United States, which has not yet ratified OPCAT (Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture), can learn from the experiences of the 63 nations that have ratified it, including Great Britain, Sweden and Tunisia. OPCAT, which has been effective, sets up oversight bodies and other national mechanisms that prevent torture and abuse in places of confinement. As people of faith, we have an obligation to protect those who cannot protect themselves and ensure that no person is tortured or abused. As Robert Burns the Poet (1784) laments: Man's inhumanity to man, makes countless thousands mourn!
BLACK HISTORY MONTH February 1 marks the beginning of February s Black History Month, a month dedicated to celebrating and remembering the history, accomplishments, and triumphs of black American culture. According to:biography.com/blackhistory, Dr. Carter G. Woodson and Rev. Jesse E. Moorland wanted to highlight the often overlooked role black people played in both American and world history. To accomplish this goal, they co-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. The pair hoped that their various projects would help instill their race with a sense of pride. Woodson later founded Negro History and Literature Week in 1920, while he was a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity at Harvard University. Woodson later became the second black person to receive a degree from Harvard. He chose February as the month of celebration to honor Abraham Lincoln, and leading abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Black History Month is now widely recognized. HUMOR CORNER Acts 2:38 - A woman had just returned to her home from an evening of church services, when she was startled by an intruder. She caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables and yelled: 'Stop! Acts 2:38!' (Repent and be Baptized, in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins may be forgiven.) The burglar stopped in his tracks. The woman calmly called the police and explained what she had done. As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar: 'Why did you just stand there? All the old lady did was yell a scripture to him. 'Scripture? replied the burglar. She said she had an Ax and Two 38s! From Mitzie Van Dongen RECIPE OF THE MONTH From Carole Enwright in the Bethany cookbook.
