EXECUTIVE MINISTER ADDRESSES KAREN YOUTH Rev. Doug Avilesbernal was a guest speaker at the third annual Karen Youth Bible Camp at Seabeck Conference Center on Saturday, June 23, 2018. Thirty-six youth from the Karen Community Church of Greater Seattle attended the event, along with nine adult leaders. This year s theme was Growing Together in Christ. Doug compared our relationship with Jesus to relationships that we have with our friends. Principal speakers for the event, which ran from Friday through Sunday, were Rev. Jared Hla from Thailand and Gail Aita. Paul Aita served as camp pastor. David Eubanks, founder of Free Burma Rangers (which provides medical aid to people along the war-torn Thai-Burma border) also made a surprise visit with his family and addressed the group. Social Media Corner: Instagram Instagram is a widely popular social media site that is owned by Facebook, for the purpose of sharing photos and short videos. Like Facebook, you can also pay for ads (and you can run ads boosted on Facebook and Instagram simultaneously). Instagram will integrate with Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler and more. By simply adding your other accounts, you can post to Instagram and have it post directly to your other social media sites by clicking on each account. Instagram is primarily a phone app, and you can have more than one account, so you can have a personal account as Mindi Welton-Mitchell Pastor, Queen Anne Baptist Church and Evergreen Social Media Specialist well as a church account and switch users. Why use Instagram? Photos reach more people than text. Photos give an opportunity to share visually what is going on in your ministry, who you are ministering with, where you are, what you are doing. Photos and short videos tell a story in a different medium. Instagram, like Twitter, uses hashtags to tag photos for searches, and like Twitter, accounts have two settings: public or private. If your account is public, then anyone can see your photos. If it is private, then only those you give permission to can view them. Instagram has remained popular among younger generations, whereas Facebook has seen a decrease in use among millennials and younger people. Also, in this time period of highly charged politics, Instagram has remained a place where most people post pictures of their daily lives, their cats, and other mundane images. Churches use Instagram to post pictures and inspirational quotes, or invitations to worship, or announce upcoming events. Check out Instagram and see how easy it is to use, and how it might possibly share your ministry and invite others into ministry. Blessings, Rev.
