THE YEAR OF OUR LORD The Christian Church Year is living history. It is ancient events brought to life each year. It is history that is as alive as the Church itself. The Church Year revolves around three great festival days Christmas, Easter and Pentecost and the seasons that connect them Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, and Pentecost or Ordinary Time. Advent Season As the Church Year begins, we spend four weeks in preparation for Christ s coming on Christmas Day. The Church Year is a cycle of festivals and seasons. Christians around the world and throughout history have shaped their faith and marked their lives by these events. The first half of the Church Year (Advent through Pentecost Day) recalls events in the life of our Lord, making them real for us in the present. The rest of the Church Year (Pentecost Season) focuses on discipleship the new life in Christ in which we are living and growing. The community of believers, the Church, keeps observing the Church Year because it celebrates God s redemption. When Christians observe the Church Year s festivals and seasons, they learn the words and acts of God that have changed history; remember the birth, life, death and resurrection of our Lord for us; participate in these saving events through which our Lord creates his Church and transforms our lives. Christmas Season 12 days of celebration of Christ s birth, leading to Epiphany, the Christmas of the Gentiles. Epiphany Season 4 to 9 weeks of thanks for Christ s revelation to the world. Lenten Season Ash Wednesday followed by 40 days of preparation, concluding during Holy Week. 14

Martin Luther s Good News Here I Stand On October 31, 1517, a man named Martin Luther stood by a church door in Wittenberg, Germany, with a large sheet of paper, a pocketful of nails and a hammer. Martin wanted to share the Good News he d read in Ephesians 2:8. You have been saved by grace through faith, Martin read. He wanted everyone to know that God s love and forgiveness are not things we need to pay for in order to receive. God paid the price when he sent Jesus to die on the cross. Martin knew this Good News was true because he d read it in the Bible. I stand by it. God help me. Amen, said Martin. Martin wrote a list of sentences about God s grace and free forgiveness. This list is called the 95 Theses. Martin posted his list on that church door. People read Martin s list on their way to church. They had never heard the Good News of God s grace and forgiveness explained this way. They told their friends and neighbors about the list. It was passed around and shared. People used the newly invented printing press to make many copies. The Good News was spreading more quickly than ever before imagined. Soon Martin s list was given to the leaders of the church in Rome. It was being shared in churches and homes throughout Europe. And now, 500 years later, that Good News continues to spread to all corners of the world. When Martin hammered the 95 Theses on the door of the Wittenberg church, great changes rang out through churches around the world. All Christians now celebrate the free gift of God s grace. People all over the world worship and read the Bible in their own languages. Music fills churches everywhere. Throughout this year, remember the Good News that Martin learned. You are saved by God s good gift of grace! Through faith in Jesus, that gift, that saving grace, is yours! Share the Good News of God s grace like Martin did. Say it gladly! Stand by it! It goes with you wherever you go. I have been saved by grace through faith! Celebrating 500 Years of Faith 18

Galatians 5:22-25 In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ [Jesus] have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit. of the My Fruit-full Prayer Love so I may love. Joy to share a smile. Peace to calm my fear. Patience to last a while. Kindness for all I meet. Goodness in all I do. Gentleness, and self-control, And faithfulness to you. Spirit, may these gifts Grow ripe each day in me So I can be a fruit-full branch For Christ, the Living Tree. love Christian love is selfless and giving. It means giving to others those things that you would want them to give you and it s doing so even if they can t pay you back. Christian love is shown in our respect for others, in our mercy, and in our charity. joy As believers in Christ, we have the gift of true joy a feeling of complete happiness that comes from knowing that our God loves us, that we belong to a family of believers, and that our heavenly home awaits. peace Peace, be still, Jesus said to the stormy sea. The waves, and the disciples in the boat, were instantly calmed. That feeling of calm in the face of adversity and the ability to face trouble with a level head is the Holy Spirit s gift of peace. patience Christian patience means more than the ability to wait. Our waiting comes with faith and hope in the Lord. In addition, just as God patiently forgives our wrongdoings, we can show that patience and forgiveness to others. kindness Jesus came with a new commandment. Love one another as God loves you, Jesus tells us. This love we have from God is shown to others through our kindness. As we treat others at home and school kindly, we obey God s command. goodness The desire to be good and to do good should always be at the front of a faithful Christian s mind. We know that Jesus came to forgive us and give us eternal life. We show our thanks for this gift in our generosity to others. faithfulness Faith in Jesus is our belief that he came to die and rise to earn us a place in heaven. Faithfulness to Jesus is our eagerness to share that news, our desire to do what we promise, and our willingness to follow Him. gentleness Christian gentleness is shown in how we solve problems with those around us and how we care for people in need. We follow Jesus example of the Good Samaritan as we treat our neighbors with gentleness. self-control God has given us wonderful bodies for living and minds for learning. The Christian fruit of self-control is our ability to choose God-pleasing behavior over sinful and harmful actions. 23
