AS WE GATHER With the Ascension of Our Lord being forty days after His resurrection, Ascension Day always falls on a Thursday. Though we observe this amazing event only once a year, we reference it every Sunday in the Creed. Not only is it noted that Jesus ascended into heaven, but He sits at the right hand of the Father, whereby He sits in the place of authority over all creation. While the event of Jesus ascension was a one-time occurrence, His lordship and rule over creation is an ongoing activity. Divine Service Lutheran Service Book - Page 151 Opening Hymn: On Christ s Ascension I Now Build LSB 492 INVOCATION In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. OPENING SENTENCES Psalm 47:6 8 Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises! For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm! God reigns over the nations; God sits on His holy throne. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Psalm 107:1 Blessed Lord, King of the universe: We confess our sinfulness by both nature and choice in turning from fearing, loving, and trusting in You above all things. Cutting ourselves off from Your love, we cannot love You, other people, or ourselves the way You created us to love. Forgive us for Jesus sake, and restore us in the love for which You created us. Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever! Therefore, 3

as a called and ordained servant of Jesus and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Introit for The Ascension of Our Lord God has gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet. The LORD says to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool. The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind, You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. God has gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet. KYRIE O Lord, who promised to send Your Holy Spirit upon Your followers, have mercy on us. O Christ, who is alive and is seated at God s right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come, have mercy on us. 4

O Lord, who ascended to the Father s right hand and will come again in clouds with great power and glory, have mercy on us, and grant us Your peace. Amen. HYMN OF PRAISE (p. 155) This is the Feast SALUTATION The Lord be with you. And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Gracious God, You are good to all and have compassion on all You have made. Grant that our eyes may be fixed on Jesus, whom You have exalted to the right hand of Your majesty as a good King for all people, who lives and reigns in communion and love with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. FIRST READING Acts 1:1 11 (Jesus promises His disciples the Holy Spirit and ascends into heaven.) 5

1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 To them he presented himself alive after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. 4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel? 7 He said to them, It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 6

EPISTLE Ephesians 1:15 23 (Praying that we may know Christ Jesus, who is the fullness of all things) 15 For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, 16 I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, 18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Service will continue on page 156 with the Alleluia and Verse 7

GOSPEL Luke 24:44 53 (Jesus blesses His disciples and ascends to heaven.) 44 Then he said to them, These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled. 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high. 50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he blessed them, he parted from them and was 8

carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple blessing God. Sermon Hymn: A Hymn of Glory Let Us Sing LSB 493 Sermon The Prayers Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer The Offering Kids and Adult Choir will be singing He Is Exalted Lord I Lift Your Name On High Communion Hymns: See, the Lord Ascends in Triumph LSB 494 To Thee, Omniscient Lord of All LSB 613 O Jesus, Blessed Lord, to Thee LSB 632 Closing Hymn: Crown Him with Many Crowns LSB 525 Announcements From the Board of Stewardship and Evangelism: Acts 1:11 Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ is ascended and Christ will come again. We live our lives in this world in the sure confidence of the world to come. We live as people who know our Lord Jesus and who know that He is coming back. This makes all the difference in how we approach our stewardship and how we care for the things of this world. 9

The Pewpoint THEME OF THE DAY The Ascended Lord Jesus Is with Us Always in His Church on Earth After He rose from the dead, the Lord Jesus presented Himself alive to the apostles, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God (Acts 1:3). When He ascended to the right hand of the Father, He did not orphan His Church, but He fills all things in heaven and on earth and gives gifts to His disciples. Even now, through His Church, He continues to do and teach (Acts 1:1), preaching repentance for the forgiveness of sins (Luke 24:47), even to the end of the earth (Acts 1:8). Though the cloud hid Jesus from the sight of His disciples then, and He remains hidden from sight even now, He remains with His people through His Gospel and Sacraments. He comes to us by the word of His apostles, by the promise of His Father and by the power of the Holy Spirit, whom He pours out upon the church, which is his body (Eph. 1:22 23). In this Holy Christian Church, we bless God and worship Christ with joy, for in His Church He blesses us with forgiveness, lifts us up in His hands and seats us with Himself in the heavenly places (Eph. 1:20).
