FLORIAN CHURCH is now on Facebook. Information and events will be posted on the Florian Hegewisch user page. Witnesses The apostles testified to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, even St. Thomas, the doubter. This witness is recorded "that you may [come to] believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God" (John 20:31 ). Tradition is the handing on of this firsthand witness by those who saw from the beginning to each of us now. "Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed" (John 20:29). Our faith is based on witnesses. We cry with Thomas, "My Lord and my God!" May the Lord strengthen us and give us his peace. Philip J. Sandstrom 2000, OCP. All rights reserved. April 3, 2016 St. Florian Parish Page 5 Getting more out of Mass Preparing for Mass by Praying at home The joy of being Catholic is in the Eucharist. The Eucharistic Sacrifice, also called Holy Mass, is the wellspring of our Catholic life and also its summit. Every Catholic, at every moment, is caught up in one of three movements: either he or she is on the way to church, giving witness to the Kingdom by preparing for the Sacred Banquet, or he is in church, participating fully, consciously and actually in the Sacred Liturgy, or he is sent forth, that is, sent from Mass into the world to bear witness to that which we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked upon and touched with our hands, all that concerns the Word of Life 1 (John 1 :1 ). Thus the Church lives from Eucharist to Eucharist, amazed at the wonder of so great a gift and awaiting her blessed hope (Titus 2: 1 3). This is why Catholics need to understand the importance of recognizing that our Eucharistic life begins on the way to church. We should go to church with a heart made ready for the Mystery we will encounter. There are a couple of things we can do to prepare. First we can read the texts appointed for the day s Mass. These include the first reading from the Old Testament, the psalm response, the epistle from the New Testament and finally the Gospel. You can easily find these readings on many Catholic calendars, in your missal or on the internet at http://www.uscb.org/nab/. When you prepare for Mass by reading the readings in advance, try to let them resonate in your heart, read the texts aloud, slowly and with attention. Repeat any phrases that strike you as beautiful or especially apt. Then turn it around. Let the Word which God speaks to you in the Scripture become your prayer by offering it back to God. Then, for the next few moments, remain in silence. Adore the God Who has spoken to you and ask Him to make you hungry for the daily bread (Luke 11:4). which you will receive at Mass. Go to church with hunger and desire, you won t be sent away empty cf. Luke 1:53. Faithful to his promise God will fill you with all the good things cf. (Luke 1 :53). By Fr. Mark Kirby, O. Cist. Cenacle ofthe Eucharistic Face ofjesus Master of Ceremonies Paul Turner A master of ceremonies assists the flow of a liturgy; the role is especially appropriate for Masses with a bishop, but a person may fulfill this responsibility in other celebrations to achieve "grace, simplicity, and order" in the ceremony (Ceremonial of Bishops, 34). The role is colloquially abbre-viated as "emcee" or "MC," but the full title given in the liturgical books is "master of ceremonies." Any layperson or cleric may serve as the master of ceremonies. The person usually wears an alb or cassock and surplice. If a deacon fulfills the role, he may wear his stole and even a dalmatic. The role of the master of ceremonies is not limited to the liturgical celebration; he or she helps prepare the event, coordinating with musicians and other ministers on the actions and words of the service. The person with these responsibilities should know the history and nature of the liturgy and be familiar not only with liturgical law but also with practical matters. A master of ceremonies helps make the liturgy beautiful and alive, encouraging the fruitful participation of the people. Proper planning and rehearsing will help make the ceremony proceed more smoothly. A poorly prepared master of ceremonies may become a distraction in the sanctuary - giving commands and forcibly moving ministers into positions. The Ceremonial of Bishops says that the master of ceremonies "should exercise the greatest discretion" and carry out responsibilities with "reverence, patience, and careful attention" (35). Any minister in the sanctuary should set an example of prayer and respect. At Masses of solemnity in parish churches, a master of ceremonies may help maintain order and provide an element of comfort to ministers unfamiliar with the details of the ceremony but wanting to serve at the altar of God. Paul Turner is pastor ofst. Anthony Parish in Kansas City, Mo. A priest of the diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, he holds a doctorate in sacred theology from Sant' Anselmo in Rome.
